Sonic Mania is a platform game published by Sega for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows in August 2017. Produced in commemoration of the Sonic the Hedgehog series' 25th anniversary, Sonic Mania pays homage to the original Sega Genesis Sonic games, featuring speedy side-scrolling gameplay. It takes place over 12 levels, including several redesigned from past games. The story follows Sonic, Tails and Knuckles as they venture to defeat their nemesis Doctor Eggman and his robotic henchmen, the Hard-Boiled Heavies.

After the events of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic and Tails detect a powerful energy reading on Angel Island and board their biplane, the Tornado, to investigate. However, Dr. Eggman sends an elite group of EggRobos to reach the signal before Sonic and Tails. The EggRobos excavate the source of the signal, a magical gemstone called the Phantom Ruby, just as Sonic and Tails arrive. The EggRobos gain new powers from the ruby, becoming the Hard Boiled Heavies, and send Sonic, Tails, and the island's guardian, Knuckles, through zones the trio have previously visited where they pursue Eggman to prevent him from using the ruby's power for evil, clashing with him and the Heavies along the way.
Sonic and his allies discover that Eggman has used the Phantom Ruby's power to retake control of Little Planet from Sonic CD. They board Eggman's robotic fortress, defeat him and the Heavies, and escape just as it explodes. If all 7 Chaos Emeralds are collected while playing as Sonic, the Phantom Ruby transports him and Eggman to another dimension. There, the Heavy King (the Hard Boiled Heavies' leader) betrays Eggman and takes the ruby, imbuing himself with power; Eggman attacks the Heavy to try to reclaim it. Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic and fights Eggman and the Heavy King separately to keep the ruby out of their possession. After the battle, the Phantom Ruby reacts with the Emeralds, negating Sonic's super state and creating a wormhole that engulfs itself and Sonic as Little Planet vanishes.

Useless fact: Tails/Miles is the best and mostly chosen character in Sonic mania plus. Mostly because he can fly, which makes the playthrough and collecting emeralds much easier.

A TAS taking damage has to consistently be one of the most horrifying things humanly possible, either its going to be some absolutely insane looking trick, some RNG manipulation you'd never notice, or absolutely nothing, and the possibility of the first one is always terrifying.

I'm kind of laughing at all the comments complaining about "You said no glitches" or similar to the boss skips. Flying over the top of the level is not a "glitch". That's the game behaving normally. You are supposed to be able to jump over the top of "soft" camera boundaries. Heck, the devs even seemed to be aware of the Flying Battery act 2 boss skip. There is that little bit of trivial extra platforming if you come from above to the act end capsule; they clearly designed that area.

I feel like Tails is superior in any Sonic 2D games (even in speedruns) mostly because with his ability to fly, he can mostly skip a lot of parts, combine that with speed, and you mostly end up at the end in short time as possible. I feel like other Sonic games need to have Tails as a playable character, since having only Sonic to be playable may be boring every time (thats just my opinion)

Yeah, most Sonic games post-'06 just have Sonic playable and only Sonic, and it's really dull at this point. Sonic's friends really should be playable in more Sonic games from the last decade than just Mania and the three Boom games.

I wonder how much time is lost vs Sonic from not having elemental shield actions and drop dash Given all those times you had to break to a near complete stop to spin dash. And how much time is saved by the ability to fly (while preserving speed!) along with _Tails exclusive_ routes and skips. (there were several skips the Sonic+Tails TAS could have but opted not to, those should not count as time loss for this)

Note that player 2 directly controlling Tails still might not result in all Tails' skips being doable by Sonic & Tails The game will "reset" P2 Tails if he gets too far off screen. And there is a lot of "off-screen action" in this route.

When you skip 10 sec in a speedrun video and the game skips 10 hrs. Btw love from India ❤️❤️ Edit: Like in TAS speedruns, what actually happens. In this TAS, there are frame perfect jumps and the spin dashes are instantly 7 tap spin dash. So I would like to know what the tool helps in.
