I've been hunting for a new shirt sewing pattern from an independent sewing pattern company who actively promote their designs to sewists over 50. Here's a list of the companies that fitted the bill, please let me know if there are any I've missed.

I hope I’m not banned for saying this, but I think your cruise through the various pattern companies shows that they do indeed use a variety of shapes, sizes and ages of models. I loved seeing the patterns you reviewed. However, whether they have grey hair or wrinkles or whatever, makes little difference to the pattern itself, as it seems to this 70+ viewer that fashion is really about the styling and the confidence that the models emanate wearing styles that fit well. What I love about today’s pattern makers is that persons of all shapes and sizes can find something that flatters their proportions in ways that ready made garments often cannot. In terms of options, believe me, today’s sewists are living in the very best of times. Back in the 1960s, my mother had very few pattern choices as a “half-size” sewest (i.e., petite fuller figure stature). How I wish she could see how beautifully the sewing community serves us today.

You haven’t been rude, so no need for banning ❤️. I get your point, but remember I showed the companies that are more inclusive, there are plenty who don’t recognise us at all, I started with a list of shirt patterns and eliminated lots which is why I thought I’d highlight the companies who do it well. Sizing has improved but there’s some inclusivity washing going on with a few companies there too gemmarie4.wixsite.com/website/post/zip-my-lip-or-button-up. Yes the model makes no difference to the pattern, but they can make a difference to how we feel if they’re always young, white, slim and able bodied.

I am so glad your focus is on fashion for women over 50. That is the main reason I picked up sewing again because the stores cater to the 20 something's and forget we exist😀

Thanks Caroline, I’m the same age as Nicole Kidman and Kylie Minogue I don’t see them being put in the little old lady box. Hopefully companies will continue to realise we’re out here ready to be marketed to 😂

Thank you for highlighting such an important issue. There is absolutely NO excuse for pattern designers not to use models aged over 50 or at the very least share images of sewists over 50 wearing their designs via Instagram etc... Your shirt is beautiful and you have given me plenty of great ideas. Many, many thanks!

Yes! Age just shouldn’t be relevant, you don’t wake up one day and decide to become a little old lady 😬. There’s a tv ad on at the moment, I think it’s for gravy, it focuses on how Grandma cooked the roast for everyone and didn’t complain- like that’s a good thing! Why didn’t anyone lend a hand so Grandma could put her feet up, have a G&T and paint her nails 😂

I love Linda Lee's Sewing Workshop patterns. They don't look anywhere near as fabulous in the diagrams as they are in reality :) There is a woman here in town who has been a distributor of The Sewing Workshop patterns for years. She is jaw dropping creative as well as being a fabulous sewer having been making her own clothes for more than 40 years :) Once or twice a year she'll cart a rack of clothing using the patterns to our monthly sewing circle at Gala Fabrics here in Victoria. She models the clothes, describing the pattern and all that can be done with it. I've made up several of her patterns. I have that shirt pattern you mention in your video that I bought as a kit. Gorgeous. Linda Lee's fabrics are fantastic quality (I couldn't agree more when you said about how worth it is to sew and wear quality fabric). Loved your video as always Alex :) Loved what you had to say re showcasing patterns on 50+ women. I'm 66 and I'm always thrilled when I see a stylish "grannie" modeling a stylish rendition of one of their patterns. Smart marketing as well because many 50+ women are the ones with some expendable income to invest in their wardrobe :)

Yes, the illustrations don’t highlight just how good they are, I was so pleased to stumble across them. I love the sounds of this Lady she sounds like the woman I aspire to be ❤️ We often have more time, experience and money (although with 3 in Uni next year that’s not happening here just yet 🤦🏼‍♀️) we should be a marketers dream. The teenagers that were ‘invented’ in the 50s might be older but we’re not going to sit quietly in our rocking chairs 😂💪🏻❤️

Nice Style Arc blouse. I tried a dress pattern of theirs and got tangled in the pocket area, but I'm newer at sewing. Liesl Gibson is the recent Liesl & Co model. She's the company owner, and took over modeling out of necessity during pandemic years, then was encouraged to continue. She's a little over over 50.

I love a shirt because it flatters my shape better than a knit top. My go to is the Archer shirt. It’s quite daunting with all the pattern pieces but it never fails to please. Although I love Style Arc designs I’ve pretty much given up because of the instructions unless it’s a simple top. Thank you for doing this and I hope your Christmas is as good as it can be given the restrictions you face. 🇳🇿😎🎁

I’ve tried a few Silhouette patterns and I find their sizing to be difficult. It’s an American company, and the sizing recommendation is to go shopping and find out what fits you. This doesn’t translate well to sewing in the UK. Also, I n these COVID times (currently under lockdown) shopping is not an option. I do love her interpretation of the designer looks and her KZbin/website are brilliant. Great sewing tips.

I haven’t purchased material online, but I am in Australia and most of the companies seem to be overseas. What or where would you suggest. Where I live we have only a Spotlight and Lincraft. I've made the SA Martha shirt twice. The first one was falling backwards on me - it felt like it didn't fit well around the neck. I raised the back neck and made it again and it was better but still not great. If you made it I'd be interested to hear what you think. I also recently made the Olya shirt in a drapey rayon. Those pockets are insane ! In the end I had to sew them closed because they flopped open in a very unflattering way. So I would recommend using a crisp fabric for that one or omitting the pockets, which is what I will do next time. I love the seaming on it though.

Yes, I'd second this recommendation. They are very inclusive. They do tend to go for knit fabrics but they are very reasonably priced and the instructions are great.
