00:00 Shirt Stud Introduction
Shirt studs are an essential item for the correct evening dress code, but they can be difficult to get right.
00:44 What is a Shirt Stud?
A piece of men’s jewelry that is used in place of buttons on a dress shirt. They are often made in precious metals and can be very decorative with some featuring precious stones or intricate engravings.
01:28 The History of Shirt Studs
Around the 1820s, men started removing the collars of their shirts for easier laundering, as we’ve already discussed in another guide. This led to the invention of shirts with detachable collars. And, most often, these collars were heavily starched to give a crisp and clean appearance.
Today, however, you’ll typically find them in groupings of three or four to accommodate longer shirt plackets as well as the lower rise of modern waistlines.
04:48 What Makes A Perfect Shirt Stud?
We would argue that the ideal dress stud is both decorative and functional and, overall, is something elegant that will help you look your best.
06:34 Stud Materials: 1. Plastic
07:15 2. Cheap Metals (Steel, Brass, Copper, Nickel)
07:58 3. Gold
08:56 4. Platinum
09:30 5. Silver
11:08 Styles of Shirt Studs
Avoid gimmicky or novelty studs such as:
→ fabric studs, which look very cheap
→ elastic knot studs, which look like costume pieces
→ studs with logos or crests, because you’re not a walking sandwich board
→ over-the-top novelty shapes
→ cheaply Monogrammed studs, because they can seem tacky or narcissistic
→ themed studs, because they’ll generally look childish
Instead, opt for classic and luxurious items such as:
→ beautifully engraved studs, for a subtle elegance
→ simple plain studs, for that classic look
→ studs in unique shapes, to describe your personality
→ studs with inlaid stones or gems
14:11 Stud Mechanisms: 1. Solid 1-Piece Stud
15:25 2. Screw-Back Stud
16:45 3. Sliding Pin Stud
17:45 4. Spring-Back Stud
18:25 5. Cotter Studs
19:45 6. Hinged Stud (Kaiser Mechanism/Lever-Back)
Our preference at GG is for the hinged stud, which is why we've designed our Fort Belvedere studs using this method!
21:55 Stud Care & Maintenance
When selecting a shirt stud it is always best to steer clear of anything tacky or over the top and stick with something elegant and classy. Invest in quality (in terms of appearance and durability) and to keep your studs safe!

We Indians never had this culture of wearing studs on shirts. We do have shirt studs for silk Kurtas ( long tunic worn with pyjamas and a waistcoat known as the Nehru jacket ). I have two such pairs of solid studs( with spherical heads) made in solid gold. They are family heirloom worn by my father during his marriage and if I marry, I may get to wear them too.

I come from an Indian business community where we enjoy wearing our studds on long Kurtas. Most of us have atleast 2/ 3 pairs of detachable shirt buttons made of silver with gold inlays, ruby, emerald and pearl stones. We have been wearing these for 500+ years.

It's an important tradition to pass on! It's sad how many men have only worn a tuxedo to prom and their wedding. I've noticed many weddings aren't even black tie anymore. I've seen so many, and have been in multiple weddings where the dress was expensive jeans and a cheap suit jacket or even just a dress shirt and no jacket. Dressing up and knowing etiquette is falling by the wayside, but it's so important and makes men feel good!

I find you guys an absolute riot. My father went in for onyx in gold T-back style shirt studs with a variety of cufflinks. He had the one tuxedo that he wore from the White House to my wedding along with its suspenders and cummerbund. He wore over-the-calf socks with either some sort of garter or the rubberbands from the Sunday Washington Post. He had several pairs of shoes that went with him to be repaired at the shop in London where he had them made. I am sorry to say that his shoes and pretty well all of his suits and ties simply disintegrated in the years after he died. His pocket squares were one thing and his cotton pocket-handkerchiefs were another. No, he did not have neck-gap or shoulder dimples even in the vile 1980s. What he did have were sports jackets over short-sleeved shirts in some sort of joke casual style and an eye-crossing number of ties. His clothing budget was rather larger than my mother's who spent hours at the sewing machine turning out her required evening gowns. It's not all fair, or gravy in reality.

What about Spezzato with shirt studs? I say only nominally in jest, I have a 3-stud set I got from my grandfather that is now a 2-stud set. Breaks my heart a little. Even at that, all modern shirts are for 4 studs. Other than hunking down to hide that last odd-stud under your vest or cumberbund (generally, a less-than-dignified look) what are you to do?
@carltrotter7622
@carltrotter7622 2 жыл бұрын
Naturally, as any contrast indicates more informality, I’d try to stay away from mixing and matching, but if you must you could try making the contrast subtle but intentional. For example, the top and bottom stud could be you grandfather’s in white, but then the middle one can be white with a silver border. It’d subtle but definite and doesn’t stand out too much whilst not seeming like you just mixed and matched random studs.

I've always been taught that black studs are only for mourning and should therefore not be worn with black tie. I also find that black studs make a dinner jacket feel a bit Hollywood-esque and other colours work better anyway.

@danbee415
@danbee415 Жыл бұрын
from googling, it seems like the colour pallette should focus on white, golds and blacks. If its going to be lapiz or topaz then it should be really subtle, while incorporating a lot of silver to bring down the loudness.

Most people here will havr a traditional black tuxedo, and I think black mother of pearl stud and cufflink set looks the best. My set has a slight tinge of purple and green but mostly black which harmonises amazingly with the tuxedo. just subtle elegance. Gold with a tuxedo looks a little ostentacious if youre not old money. White mother of pearl blends too much with a white shirt.

I am struggling with which type of colouring my studs should be for black-tie. I really don't like onyx as I feel its just as ostentacious as gold. I really think mother-of-pearl looks great for black-tie which has a subtle elegance. I'm thinking either white MoP or smoked MoP, in sterling silver. Still need to think on this.......

I felt the extended advert for your studs was a bit unnecessary. You contradict yourselves as well, stating that mechanisms are more prone to failure, but then claiming that your own mechanistic studs are perfectly reliable. I think the video could have benefited from slightly more subtle product placement as it somewhat undermines its didactic remit, coming off a little too pitchy at times. Just some feedback.
