Gentleman Quiz: gentl.mn/what-type-of-gent-quiz
00:00 Vintage Style Introduction
It's hard not to notice just how well vintage gents used to wear their clothes! We'll take a look at the differences seen in the menswear of yesteryear to see how (as well as how much better!) classic style was done then.
01:30 1. Black Tie
Vintage gentlemen tended to own their own Black Tie ensembles and they dressed up more in the past. Nowadays, many men either don’t dress up for special events at all or rent a tuxedo.
05:28 2. Shoes
Dress shoes were considered major investments in the past. Shoes weren’t just treasured, they were treasures!
08:23 3. Socks
Vintage gentlemen took socks as seriously as shoes. Colorful socks in a variety of designs were a staple of classic menswear.
10:12 4. Trousers
Trousers had a flattering high waist that falls on the natural waist and not just above the hips. In the 1910s and '20s they were slimmer; in the 1930s they got fuller, but they always had a well-fitting high rise.
13:18 5. Dress Shirts
Vintage gentlemen knew the right shirt for the right outfit and they're not afraid to introduce patterns and pastel tone colors. From their dress shirts, they build a collection that suits their lifestyle, wardrobe, and climate.
15:51 6. Odd Combinations
Vintage gentlemen had to make fewer garments go farther so they developed a sense for creative and stylish combinations.
16:59 7. Neckwear
They crafted collections of neckties and bow ties suitable for work, play, and formal occasions.
20:22 8. Hats
How could hats look so right on vintage gentlemen? Vintage gentlemen grew up in a society where the rules and traditions of wearing hats were taught and valued.
21:29 9. Overcoats
They have high standards for quality so vintage gentlemen knew to never skimp on clothes that keep you warm.
23:21 10. Pajamas
Vintage gentlemen understood that even if most people will never see you in a sleeping garment, it's still worth getting a good one for your own benefit.
24:49 BONUS: Watches
Vintage gentlemen employed different face styles, bands, and materials for watches that fit their style and the occasion. They also treated watches like treasured family heirlooms.
Hopefully, we’ve shown how the style of the past isn’t gone forever.

I kind of disagree. Even though I am now retired (70s, ugh), if I'm going out someplace I try to look a little "better" than usual. Of course I'm not wearing the same clothes I would wear when I was in the workforce, but I do wear nice slacks and some printed tunic dresses, for instance. They fit my age better. Most of my shoe choices are strappy sandals, pumps, and ballet slippers. Of course I have my share of flip-flops and sneakers! All of that being said, I think men just seem to shine when they are very well dressed. Even an average looking guy seems to turn handsome when he's dressed in a three-piece suit!

That is all thanks to this channel's enlightenment on classic menswear and living. I don't doubt that this is the same story for many other viewers and thank you for doing this for us. How does your love grow more? Mine has been diluted to sparse interests in those, and just have that commitment to a sartorial lifestyle, I need to grow more love for it, as used to do a while ago.

@@keshavrao212 Once you have that sartorial lifestyle, it's about then constantly poking and broadening your comfort zone. For example, my profile picture is a Top Hat - I never thought I'd manage to pull off a top hat without looking clownish and now I can do it and only look half-clownish. Try incorporating spectator shoes, or try going for a more english cut in the jacket, try experimenting with double breasted jackets, or try matching that hideous shirt with your new suit etc. Like with anything in life, whether it be business, friendships or relationships - If you don't take risks you won't have fun. I wish you the best of joy and success in your stylistic trip! Godspeed.

Honestly I agree with all the points in this video in a heartbeat. Though I'm only 19, I've always thought that I could put my best foot forward in the clothes that I wear and I began to take an interest in my clothes since I was 14. Even as I grow up, I would continue in dressing my best in a classic way (in Sport Coats, Blazers, Suits, Odd trousers and Chinos, Dress Shirts and Dress Shoes) will ensure that when I look at my childhood I could proudly say that from a young age, I didn't dress like my peers and blended in but I dressed really well and stood out in an elegant and classic way.

High rise pleated trousers are really hard to find these days. Everything else one needs to look dapper is still readily available. Just takes a little time to look for it. I absolutely second wearing classic hat styles and high waisted trousers. Fedoras can really top off a look although they get a bad rap because a lot of men don't coordinate them well with their outfits and it looks sloppy. I don't think they'll be as popular as they once were, but they can still look very dapper! High waisted pleated trousers, and gurkhas for that matter, have become my best and most comfortable pants. I got a few pairs made-to-measure in wool, linen, and cotton in neutral colors -- and I can easily say they have become a core part of my capsule wardrobe. All that said your channel has definitely become a positive influence in the way I look at classic menswear!

I think one thing that factors in is that these days, people (Americans anyway) are just getting fatter and fatter. So much of the vintage style comes from a not so long ago era when men, statistically speaking, were thinner, even less muscular. While there are definitely options for us larger guys (well, I'm now formerly larger, yay) people seem to be dressing solely for comfort's sake.

My favourite pair of pyjamas are a lovely traditional cut set from M&S that are blue with a koi design pattern and navy piping on the collar, they just make me happy when I wear them. What I like to do with my watches is change out the straps for different occasions, a NATO strap is very practical when I'm hiking or doing any watersports, while a leather strap makes a watch look dressier. I own a few vintage watches that only one of them came with the original strap, so I took the opportunity to buy some really nice alligator, lizard skin, and rayskin straps for them so they can look great with my outfit.

My tip for shoes: Check the used market. I have bought so many of my shoes used, because some people sell their shoes after only a handful of wears because it's only then that they notice they do not fit them. I got a 400$ pair for 50$ that has only been worn once because the guy took the new shoes to the cobbler, had a rubber sole protector glued on, then noticed the pair was too small, but he could not return it anymore for obvious reasons. It is my favorite pair right now. Another pair I got was completely neglected, sold for 30$ (300 new) and was looking like new after one hour of shoecare.

The greatest paradox to me is that while clothing, even quality clothing, is becoming cheaper men just dress worse and worse. I'm a student so I can't afford much anyway but I see no reason why I wouldn't invest in quality clothes as soon as I get a better income

Overcoats still look good on most men today. I grew up in Chicago and besides its Navy heritage, peacoats were very common. Overcoats have supplanted them today, but the cold weather states still have a slight degree of elegance simply because a lot of office workers still choose classic style overcoats over down and quilted jackets. Not to say you still won't see hundreds of people a day in those jackets, but your eye is drawn to those who chose an overcoat for the day. I'll be moving back to Chicago at the end of summer, and I am looking forward to using my own overcoats again.

@@BlueJayWaters it's funny when people comment about my peacoat when I'm wearing it and I'm like "join the navy and you can get one lol". I never wore it while in the navy because I wore cammies, so I waited until after I retired.

@@fmfdocbotl4358 I think I wore it once going to my Marine command in my NSU's (was also a Doc). But other than that, I also wore mine more after getting out. Shame they're not issued anymore. New sailors won't know what it's like to be issued a piece of history that's tailored to them.

Living in the Chicago suburbs, a variety of coats is necessary. I got a double breasted polo coat in camel color, made in Italy. It was virtually brand new at Goodwill I purchased a navy RL peacoat this year from Macey's. And, I got an A2 Bomber jacket from Cockpit this year. Of course, being a senior now, I have owned camel hair polo coats, leather bomber jackets, safari jackets before these recent purchases. Two Burberry trenchcoats are also in my closets.

I purchased some pre-owned chocolate brown Allen Edmond's cap toes from Ebay and an array of colored, warmish colored shoe strings from Fort Belvedere. I'm having the shoes resoled. I want a pair of shoes that look like the pair shown at 7:05 of this video. I love that chocolate brown shoe with the warm pop of color in the shoe laces. Thanks, Raphael. Cheers.

once I wore a pair of 400$ shoes... I never went back. It's also increasingly hard to find natural fibre socks. I do not want nylon on my feet. And I agree on the coats. I have a cashmere blend overcoat and its far nicer than a big puffer, which I hate. I had an old Harris tweed overcoat that I wore out completely but it lasted 15 years for me and lord knows how long for its previous owner. It went with literally everything. My watches are also on the smaller size because I don't want some monstrosity getting caught on my sleeve.

Would it possible to do an episode of what men wore to work? I don't mean business, but more of the laborers. I have seen pictures of what looked like mechanics that would wear what seemed like dress shirts, ties and hats. Unless I am completely mistaken, but I find that very intriguing and wonder if the material was different than regular business attire back in the early 20th century. Thanks!

High rise pants are so comfortable! When I was a kid my mom was pretty confused about why I always pulled my jeans up as high as I could, I just didnt find it comfortable to have them on my hips. As an adult I tend to wear pants on my hips cuz I usually have to buy them a little too big, but I really should take the advice of finding a tailor. I dont care if I paid $3 or $300, I want my clothes to last and look nice!

Another great GG video. A couple of things, if you don’t mind. Could you please do a video entitled “ William Powell: Gentleman of Style “, or “How to dress like William Powell”? Can a gentleman still look stylish if they have to wear orthopedic shoes? Many men back then looked better, because they often wore vests as part of their wardrobe. Thanks for all that you folks do. Very much appreciated.

I totally agree with everything on this list. Where can one buy a decent pair of pants that use suspenders instead of a belt? Most of what I found was on a site that does more late 1800s (steampunk) style) which is nice, but not for everyday wear. I am a steampunk, but I don't wear it every day and those pants aren't as (if I may use the word) dapper as I would like it to be. Thank you.
