From my little research it seems the origin of this was to protect the weaker from seasonal change illnesses.. with time people forgot about it and it was reduced to a mere ritual of tying a symbolic pouch containing lime power, lime powder was used as and still is used for disinfecting from pathogens. Brides in old days were kids as well so it was done for them as well. Similar event I found in Maharashtra called Boernan where kids upto 5 years old are given a berry bath, the berry grows after Season change on Sankranti. There also it was become a mere ritual now for kids functions.
