I must say, whats odd is that they never explaineed how shisui unlocked a mangekyo (who he lost to aken his). At least no as far as i remember. But they did for all the other main cast Uchihas that were in the story.

Apparently he had a teammate that died during the war, shisui had the opportunity to save him but didn’t due to greed and envy. Shisui had a change of heart last second and he awakened the MS, that’s also why he stopped being hateful and wanted to help people
