I caught up to Naruto just before the reveal and KZbin was wild back then.A lot of people believed it was Izuna, Madara's younger brother which tbf would have been a nice parallel to Sasuke after his prior meeting with Itachi. But it would have cheapened the value of the mask, as it had to be someone the viewer knew otherwise it would have been a bad reveal.

I remember all the theories before Tobi’s identity was revealed back in the day. Some were pretty wild like Sasuke from the future. Other common theories were tobi being Kagami Uchiha, or Shisui Uchiha. But the most common and obvious theory was Tobi being Obito. I remember people hating the idea of Obito being Tobi because it would “ruin his character”. I didn’t care who was behind the mask, I was just so excited to find out this mystery. And I honestly believed that Tobi being Obito would be an interesting way to direct the story because how did some kind kid that cared about his teammates turn into a whole criminal starting a war. Tobi being Obito was the right choice because it just made the story more interesting, especially for characters like Kakashi, and how he would handle this shocking revelation. And I remember kishi saying in a interview during that time that Kakashi would be more involved in the story, and what better way than making Tobi Kakashi’s former teammate?

Here is my theory: tobi is a piece of madara's soul,chackra or something like that. is possesing obito which madara revived to complete madara's master plan. This is why obito is aging faster because he has madara's old man chackra inside him. Zetsu reconstructed some of obito body(his arm.) Besides all that obito is now somewhat disappointed with kikashi making a false promise over his grave.

I read something about that is really obito but has madara's spirit or soul whatever that when the 1rst kage defeat him hes soul went flying to that body that he found and zetzu helped...Btw tobi was in a fight w minato but that was zetzu u can tell by hes white blood coming apart, Zetzu was taking his chakara to clone madara thats what i think, I mean thats hes ability and obito stay hidden :)

I love how this is on my recommendations 9 years later lmfao. I actually won a ShonenJump magazine contest asking who people predicted was tobi and I ended up begging the first to submit obito and won a bunch of Naruto merchandise. A lot of it didn’t fit but it was really cool sitting down like a mad man with a bunch of print outs of Naruto frames and episodes as a teen trying to put it together lol
