Hip rotation is a core principle in Shito Ryu Karate as it enables the fighter to produce an ideal focal impact (Kime). As a matter of fact, the power and beauty of Shito Ryu is that you need to maintain Kime on more natural and dynamic stances in terms of width and length, so you should perform faster and more agile to compensate for the shorter distance, as often is the case in street fights and self-defense situations.

First of all: sorry for my English. So: The basic difference is that Shito-Ryu is the most beautiful :-) Seriously: The main difference is due to the fighting distance. Shotokan fights from further away, so its stances are deeper and therefore its movements are longer. (therefore lift fist over their shoulder) Shito-Ryu fights at closer range therefore the stance is higher the moves are shorter because doesn't have time for long moves. (That's why they only pull the fist up until the shoulder.) But a good example of this is e.g. the Goju-Ryu where the fight is very close and therefore the positions are even higher and the fist is only raised to the upper arm. But hip rotation is the basis of every karate style I know, as is Hara breathing. But of course I may not know it well. It was a long time ago when I studied Shito-Ryu.

As a shodan shitoryu practitioner, I can tell you if your not rotating your hips in your techniques, your probably not doing it right.

I went from Tae Kwon Do to Shitoryu for about a month, and it was tough. An air force instructor had classes in my town. Very different turning the knees inward for blocking groin strikes. Average time to get black belt was 6 years vs Tae Kwon Do of 2 years.

I went into classes in the 80's and my second class was full contact under face with a green belt. No pads. He wore me out pretty good. Instructor left town my second class and the kid he left in charge asked for any volunteers to spar one on one. He was younger than me. I came from a Tae kwon Do back ground. That sparring session went on for a good 45 minutes. I was bruised up pretty good that night. Haha

This is not shito ryu. This is how a shotokan sees the difference between both schools. If I would like to simplify the difference between schools, I would say that in Shito-Ryu moves are smaller than in Shotokan, more natural. And by the way, Shito-Ryu use hip rotation as well
@FightEquipt

I kind of agree with you. This video was made a while ago after we had one Shotokan Instruction visiting our Shito Ryu club. Once he was lined up and perform these basic movements, Shotokan stands out from the rest of the Shito Ryu students with bigger movements.

Soto & Uchi Uke are upside down in Shotokan & Shito-Ryu
@FightEquipt
@FightEquipt 4 жыл бұрын
Soto meaning 'out'. Uchi meaning In. Take the word Soto (Out) for example, the difference of using these words are; Shotokan's Soto Uke means block from the outside in, therefore the blocking arm moves from outside inward. Shito Ryu' soto (uchi) uke block for inside out, therefore the blocking arm moves from inside but is blocking 'out' wards. I found this very interesting, so I made this video.

@@FightEquipt In shito-Ryu we used Soto-Uke as in Shotokan; some master call it Yoko uchi. Uchi (ude) uke is also used in Shito-Ryu or called yoko uke.
@Tejinashi-f9z
@Tejinashi-f9z 3 ай бұрын
Shito Ryu's age uke doesn't look like that. There, the arm not only goes up, but also a little forward. You can really see the difference in doubles practice, because the arm goes towards the opponent and it is much safer. In Shotokan, a stronger opponent will easily push down the arm performing the age uke. in Shit Ryu he can't do that because his arm slides off him as he blocks the strike at an angle. The Shotokan rotates the hips almost completely during the defense, leaving the stomach and back unprotected, and a lot of time passes between the defense and the counterattack. Shito Ryu only rotates the hips about forty-five degrees and the defending hand and the other attacking hand move in sync at the same time, so there is hardly any time between the defense and the counterattack.

Hiki-Te. Common in traditional martial arts like Kung Fu, Tai Kwan Do and karate etc as a basic form. This kind to techniques do not exist in most full contact fight sports like MMA, Western Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai etc with exception for Kyokushin and Kudo which is also karate.
