Shiv Kumar Batalvi is the greatest writer from Punjab. They hated his work so much that they destroyed almost all of it. imagine being this popluar with just fraction of your work. If only we could read his entire collection we would realise the greatness of this man

Jagjeet Chitra created a whole album of Batalvi's songs in album "Birha da sultan". Jagjeet Singh sang "main kandiali thorr we sajjna" in Panjabi film "long da lishkara". Mahendra Kapoor sang a whole cassette of Batalvi songs.Jagjeet Singh in 70s abd Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in 80's made popular the now famous song "mayen ni mayen Merre geetan de nainan vichon Birha di dard pavve" Famous Panjabi novelist and a friend of Shiv Kumar Mohan Singh Kahlon wrote a novel "Gori nadi da geet" loosely based on Shiv's life. Shiv was a kudrati poet not a kitaabi shayer,which many poets are according to famous poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz

I don't think that Shivakumar used to write poetry about the love of two girls. Actually, Shivakumar's family was killed in the 1947 incident. So he was 10 years old then. So he started writing poetry from that time. He wrote painful ghazals in the memory of his loved ones, in the memory of his family, not in the memory of the girls.
