@@Valkonnen In the centuries before "genetic markers" were known, marriage-matches were determined using family histories (that was all people had), and if some were esteemed as the high/deep carriers of traditions, so be it, but there's nothing Jewish in a gene: it's in family beliefs and practices. All religions thrive on made-up mumbo-jumbo, which many outgrow to become "secular." Hence the original question here.

María Mary Miriam - Judaea was the area of Palestine allotted to the descendants of Judah. These descendants were called Jews not because the lived in Judaea but because they were the descendants of Judah.. A Bedouin living in Israel is an Israeli citizen but it doesn't make him a Jew. The Jews are the descendants of Judah and so it is all about race. I have no doubt that there are people living in the Middle East who are Jews by race but Moslem by religion and who don't know that they are Jews, Jews whose ancestors converted to Islam centuries ago. Likewise there will be some amongst the Israelis who are descended from converts to Jewish religion. That doesn't mean that Israel is a nation of converts, it is primarily a nation of those who are Jews by race and that will include the unbelievers among them.

For example, descendants of Joseph or of Reuben would not be Jews by your definition. I once went to Bulgaria for business. I arrived in Sofia a day early and went out for a walk. Nearby my hotel (the "best" hotel in Sofia), I saw a street fair/bazaar. As I walked thru it, and saw everything that was being sold at each booth, I realized that there was a question I had never thought of before! Where did all of the Nazi and SS pins, war medals and medaillons go after WW2?? Walking along this tree lined street, I saw the answer! They were all in Sofia, Bulgaria! The Bulgarians sold them without any shame, or excuses. Not even with any explanations of where they were from or why they were selling them. Yet there was booth after booth, selling endless SS paraphernalia from WW2. And they could not have cared less what they had and what its meaning was. They just wanted their money.
