I had a 1986 BMW 750iL that did the same thing, when you reached a certain speed. I wasn't aware of it, until I took it to a state inspection center, and they revved up the engine in drive, with the wheels on a system. I was watching from a observation area, and saw it drop down, and then back up again as they eased off the gas. It was quite interesting to see it for the first time, ... as you're not aware of it when you're driving on the interstate.
