Shnootz - Reaction Video (Bee Gees - Blue Island)

What's cracking, folks! I'm back with another Bee Gees reaction from their 1993 album Size Isn't Everything, and this time we listen to compelling "Blue Island," a rich and lush song I had fun tracking along the way. This is primarily Barry & Robin singing in unison (with Mo coming in on harmonies) and it is among my top favorites. It does have that earlier folky vibe. One of the reasons it's so difficult to choose a favorite Bee Gee song is because they have so much variety. Just on this album alone we have "Kiss of Life", "Blue Island", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", and "Fallen Angel", all 10s in my mind and yet all so different you can't really compare them I could never pick a favorite even out of those four - it would just depend on my mood. As always thanks for the reaction and helping to keep Bee Gees music alive!

This has such a nice acoustic guitar setting and the harmonica gives it that folksy feel. And such a gentle setting for the subject of the song which has already been mentioned in comments during the last Bee Gees reaction and this one. Matt, you were right about the Blue Island being of such emotional significance; it is an afterlife, heaven itself. And the vocal harmonies on this one are the best!

This was written for the children of Yugoslavia. Barry: The other side, what we call heaven, in fact is blue and it's an island. Good or bad, this is where we all end up. So we wrote 'Blue Island' and dedicated it for the children of Yugoslavia, because even though they may not survive, the hope is that they, as well as us, are all going to this beautiful place.

I do enjoy the harmonies on this one. It IS reminiscent of their late 60's/early 70's material. One thing that's always bugged me about this song, though, is that harmonica. To me, it is too harsh and jarring, not smooth like the rest of the song. It kinda sounds like a synthesizer, but apparently, it's a real harp.
