What's up, people! I'm back with another Duran Duran reaction, and this time we listen to another Duran cover of a Bowie tune---"Five Years"---from another Bowie tribute album, this time from 2021. Nice! I have a Roxy Music deep-dive playlist too, and indeed, the friend of my channel who shared Roxy Music's material with me is a Durannie who explained that Roxy Music and Japan/David Sylvian had been notable influences for DD.

I didn't know this Bowie song before this DD cover. I thought it was ok when I first heard it but now I love it, esoecially the piano and Simon's vocals. The video to this I think was film during the pandemic so even tho they are all together on the video, they were all filmed seperately. Great cover!

I think "Five Years" is one of Duran Duran's best cover songs. They capture the mood so well. And yes, Simon is really showing the world how good he really is on this track. It's the opening song to "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars," which I only first listened to last year in spite of being a long time Bowie fan. It's a great album. You know, I'm pretty sure if you did a full song by song reaction to David Bowie's discography you might now have a hint how long it might take...

Matt awesome amazing vocals and vocal cords he was 63 last year Simon looks after is vocals and cords he exercises um everyday that's why he sounds totally amazing awesome brilliant 👍👌 he's got one of the most powerful voices going in is age range omg omg it's brilliant also Mike Carson is on this track playing is piano 🎹 and this amazing track as been put on future past double vinyl red and green vinyls and x2 booklets so so so blloody brilliant again I'll say it outstanding vocals by the one and only Simon lebon wow wow wow thx for a awesome review and I've got to say this is one of my all time favs cover and I'll tell you David Bowie would be proud of this five years release this is why I luv Duran Duran best band on planet earth 🌍🌎 they always surprise us Duranies outstanding wow wow wow 🥰

Falling Down as far as I'm aware was the last physical single release and it just had the radio edit on it, so yeah it's a bit spartan around that time and onward for extra official material. As you say it's an impressive vocal for a 62 year old (as he was at the time in Jan 2021). Ironically it seems that the incident in 2011 when he lost part of his voice and subsequently had to go through treatment to get it back seems to have paid off in the long run.

I think he still struggles occasionally. Sometimes (especially live) he sounds gravelly or like he needs to clear his throat but I think his torn vocal chord injury ( and possibly covid) has given him long term issues. That said, his re-training his vocals and compensating his loss of range has proven to be of value and only made him use his vocals with more control

Check out the video. Nick is rocking some Bowie influenced eye shadow, all the band have little make up flourishes in tribute to Bowie, Mark Garson also appears , as this was part of a TV special for the Five Years tribute project. Nick is suitably OTT and looks his most 'Alien' (as Durannies often refer him to as) and camps it up with some odd saluting motions while Roger is particularly bad at pretending to walk (he's just treading the ground)

Hahaha, Nick really has had such an interesting and almost preternatural look as I've come to see. I think he looks like an Anne Rice vampire on the cover of Notorious.

I think Simon's vocals are outstanding on this. It almost surpasses the original (only because it's Bowie!). Original pianist Mark Garson plays. This is on the Japanese version of Future Past CD and now on the Future Past vinyl reissue with all the available tracks for that album.

Nice, Garson (or "Garbon," as I think I called him by mistake in an earlier video) sounds great. And seriously, I can't believe how good Simon's vocals are in this one. Unreal.

this is up there with boys keep swinging as a cover. amazing take, even though this is way more bowie than DD, but simon pull it so well.
