I remember when this single was released. So much controversy around the video, which is a bit funny looking back. It’s a beautiful work and she knew what she’s was doing when she filmed it. Great track and one of her much deserved classics. After this song she released “recue me” and “This used to be my playground”, which are so different from each other, but equally so good.

Co-written by Lenny Kravitz and Ingrid Chavez (who was having a romance with Kravitz at the time and went on to marry and later divorce David Sylvian!), produced by Kravitz and Andre Betts (who Madonna would go on to work with on Erotica). It's reminiscent of Chavez's own music as she would sing/speak (she recorded much of her first (very good) album, released just before Justify My Love, with Prince). Chavez later sued and received an out of court settlement for not being credited as the writer - I believe Madonna added or changed one line, the "poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another" line, as she reuses it on Erotica. . All that aside it's a great track, yes it's sensual and sexy but it's also romantic. She is saying I have this love and passion for you, are you going to prove that I'm right to have these feelings for you. This and the other new track signified where she would go on her next album. The video for the track really amped up the controversy - it looks pretty tame these days but it was kind of thrilling for the time. Here in the UK it was given a late-night premiere on TV and released as the (I believe) first ever video single (featuring this track and her Vogue at the MTV awards performance), but it was banned from a lot of music video channels. Regarding order, between Like a Prayer and this was the album "I'm Breathless", which was an album of tracks related to her role in Dick Tracy as Breathless Mahoney, a couple of which were in the film, though it's not a soundtrack album. She won an Oscar with one track and it also included Vogue, so I think it's worth a listen. Do Rescue Me first, the other "loose" track.

The production is so good on this track. The drum programming, the droning bass line, the backing vocals by Kravitz...just very very good. I always felt it was an interesting choice to say 'make love in a train' instead of fuck....she is definitely mixing the emotional with sensual messaging here

You're nearly there! In my humble opinion, the only three Madonna albums worth listening to are Erotica, Bedtime Stories and Ray of Light. The earlier stuff is too poppy and the later stuff too sleazy. But Erotica is fab, her best album I think, Bedtime Stories is great and funky, and Ray of Light is sort of "Madonna grown up". But this one, Justify my Love, is a great song as well, and like others have said, a good lead-up to her Erotica album.

A prelude to Erotica. This was such a left field track at the time. Superb. Written by ingrid Chaves and Lenny Kravitz. Still haunting and deeply erotic. I wont mention what i used to get up to to this song back in the day 😅 Wait till you hear Rescue Me the next single.

I know, at this point, you've moved on to Erotica. I'd highly recommend reacting to the William Orbit remix of Justify My Love. An amazing mix, but also a sign of things to come since he produced her Ray of Light album (1998) and worked with her periodically afterwards. His remix of Erotica is also amazing and in the same vein.
