“Now and then we’ll cry …” This is up there with my favourite OMD tracks. It is such a sad song, the newscast/German language intro sets the scene followed by the haunting , staccato strings, mournful lyrics and outstanding vocal performance. Your Cold War synopsis, Matt, was spot on; Dazzle Ships being a concept album of that time, exploring and touching on the political themes that consumed the early 80’s. I first heard this track when I was but 13 and I’ve lost count how many times I’ve listened to it in the intervening years. Simple, haunting and magical … and what other band can produce so many top rate waltz-time pop songs.

A while back I noted OMD being the masters of "the pretty song." Here's one of their best in that category. About a year ago I started getting back into the bands I loved in the 80s, and Dazzle Ships was near the top of the list of albums for a relisten. On this song I realized I was singing along with track I hadn't listened to in close to 30 years -- amazing what gets stuck in the recesses of one's mind.

Hey Matt. OMD. Another one of my favourite bands for the last 40+ years. I’ve been lucky enough to meet them a few times at the Glasgow Concert Hall. Really nice people. This album Dazzle Ships was the follow up to the hugely successful Architecture & Morality album from two years before. It was regarded as a commercial flop but certainly amongst diehard OMD fans it’s a fantastic album. I can’t believe it’s 40 years since it’s release. Have a great Sunday. All the best. 🏴🇺🇸

This is in my top 10 OMD which doesn't sound too exciting, but they have so many amazing songs. When he starts belting! 🥲

Like a pawn in a game, hard to take. Great line. All the cold war references then the intense unexpected vocal explosion.

Everything has been said appropriately already, so I just wanted to add what the German girl complains about in the beginning: She was trained as an industrial management assistant but wasn't taken on by the company, i.e. she's fully trained but doesn't have a job (something she must have taken for granted).

I am curious wether you have listened to B-sides, Bonus Tracks. On the next album Crush, the extended mix of Locomotion featured a bonus track called Her Body In My Soul. Andy's vocals kept getting better as the band evolved and the way this bonus track wraps up is interesting. You are getting closer to the very first song I heard from OMD: Radio Waves. Dazzle Ships changed the way I listened to albums.

You can kind of hear where Martin Gore got some inspiration for some of those droning on songs that he takes the lead vocals on.
