Shnootz - Reaction Video (Roxy Music - 2 H.B)

What's up, folks! I'm back with another Roxy Music reaction from their 1972 self-titled album, and this time we listen to the cryptically titled (for me, anyway) "2 H.B." Once again, the sonics of this one are unreal, so join me for some more remarkable Roxy Music. Cheers!

I always thought the sax solo sounded like an early example of Eno taking short musical phrases and repeating them using reverb/tape-delay to overlap with each other while fading. I wish it went on for longer. He used it to excellent effect later in his own 'Discreet Music' and much later in his generative music apps.

I think they have a lot of sax in their songs merely because they have a band member as a sax player, not a guest musician, so they need to give him something to do instead of twiddling his thumbs 😉

In a typical piece of Ferry wordplay 2HB also refers to a grade of pencil. Your pronunciation of Nena is correct. It's not Neeena, at least not in Germany. Originally it's a Spanish word (for a little kid/girl). Wow ! I wouldn't have heard the Bogart connection in the track name without the explanation. Was it a single? I don't recall it. I was only aware of them in their later years

@@izzyworld8068 There was no single release taken from this album. They recorded "Virginia Plain" after the album was out. It was attached to later re-issues. So no, you didn't miss "2HB" on Top of the Pops in 1972. You were too young anyway, weren't you? I only discovered Roxy Music in 1995, at the age of 20.

I was too young, yes, but I became aware of them around 75 , my older brothers and sisters liked them. I am 55 years young

2HB means To Humphrey Bogart. It is about and for Humphrey, who portrays Rick, who gives Ingrid Bergman to the hero of Casablanca, PaulHenreid. Nena is pronounced Nay-nuh.

2 HB is a pencil grade. I know this as I am an artist HB being the middle of hardness and softness. H is hard lead/graphite. B is soft. For example 2H is less hard than 6H. As they are an "Art School" band it might be a nod to it?

Thanks for that! I had forgotten about the pencil grading system but brings back childhood memories as Matt said. I can’t actually remember the last time I used a pencil tbh!

I spent a lot of time with both the 2H and 2B pencils when I was an Architectural Technician. The first for the initial light outlines and the second to overwrite with a darker line when done. Still a technique I use when sketching.
