The Edge has said his approach to playing is often like that of a percussive instrument - that really shows here

The Edge is my favourite. I was early teens.

Been a huge fan of U2 since 2000 Strangely heard this for the first time at the end of Three Kings 1999, it's not a grower track, it just instantly hits in the feels. What a track, what an album, what a catalogue of songs, what a band ❤️

One of the highligts on the album, love Bono's voice here, and The Edge's guitar is incredible

My favourite track on the album, and I adore the guitar work from The Edge. He really shines here. The sonic textures he paints here are superb.

Great track. Brings me back to, and still, one of my favourites on a drive.

Love this track, that signature guitar by The Edge is in full throttle... I think this might have been a single in some territories? I remember seeing a video to "Red Hill Mining Town", so some of the album tracks were either singles in different countries or they thought it was potentially a single? Either way all of the tracks on the album were top notch, no fillers!

I don't think I had ever heard this one, but it is a top U2 track to me! 😲 It has all the ingredients that make me love this band, and Bono's vocals and The Edges's guitar are also what most stands out to me. With the addition of all the rest, of course. 😁

Song refers to America. And how Bono saw the dream and hope of America being squashed by shitty politicians. We need new dreams tonight. Sad eyes - crooked crosses. I stand with the sons of Cain is a biblical reference to the first musician.

Since it's U2 in God's country could simply refer to Ireland.

Such an accurate observation of Bono's vocal qualities. Unfortunately also an indication of where his voice would be heading... Whereas other singers, such as Johnny Cash, develop different timbres with old age, Bono's voice just seems shot now.
@mattsnider26677 ай бұрын
Makes sense, I wasn't aware he had lost much of that vocal power, but given time and touring, etc., it's not surprising. Also did you comment on the latest Prince reaction, brother? I don't remember seeing a comment from you, maybe I just missed it. But it actually made it onto KZbin! (it was "Hot Wit U").

This is an absurd take. Bono was still in his shouting phase during the Joshua Tree tour. Rattle and Hum for all its unevenness and blues songs capture Bono’s voice strengthening and becoming more controlled. Achtung Baby and Zooropa are probably the high water mark vocally. Power, rasp, falsetto beyond measure, and most importantly- control. Pop while one of my favorite U2 albums, has similar vocals, this is when Bono actually had to have surgical intervention on his vocal chords. But then he came back as strong as ever. Vocals were undeniably amazing on both the elevation and vertigo tours. Slightly less so on 360 occasionally. But just watch the live from Paris video in 2015 and tell me that his voice is shot. Bono at 64 is now probably just starting to slow down a bit vocally. Not bad for 48 years of belting out tunes across the world.

@christianschmitz5261 @mattsnider2667 I disagree w/ your assessment of Bono’s voice being shot after this album. Especially having seen him sing live many times since. For ex., his legendary transition from All I Want Is You (a track on U2’s next album) into Where the Streets Have No Name-which he did on the Elevation tour almost every night & is captured in their live concert film from Boston-is well known among U2 fans as one of his greatest vocal moments ever. That’s years after this album. Also, a great voice isn’t just “power.” It’s technique, too. And Bono would continue to grow technically thru the 90s. For ex., he hadn’t even discovered his falsetto yet(!). He barely used it thru the earlier albums-nothing like the magnificence he would unload on Achtung Baby & Zooropa albums. Personally I love when Bono signs in full voice, but I know many fans who would think what you just said was a sacrilege-b/c their fav Bono signing style is yet to come. He also develops his rasp & growl technique much more as well. He did have some vocal chord trouble in the late 90s, but then recuperated & got it back. I’d say that at least through U2’s famous Slane Castle shows in 2001 (also released live), he still had his epic, powerful voice. Even now, tho he’s certainly not what he was 25 yrs ago, he’ll save it up & still have a couple of moments each concert that will blow away the audience & be better than 99% of rock singers half his age.
