Fun fact: Did you know that Magne Furuholmen wrote that riff when he was only 15 years old? He was in a band called Bridges with a-ha band mate Pål Waaktaar. The song that would become Take On Me was then called “The Juicy Fruit Song” (named after the gum). It would later become a song called “Lesson One” after Mags and Pål met up with Morten Harket. “Lesson One” flopped miserably, so the three of rewrote the lyrics and the music, and “Take On Me” was born. It took them three tries to get the song to chart, and the third time was the charm, because not only did they have an awesome song, but they had an awesome music video to go along with it! ❤️

Yes they will. Because in 30-40 years' time, the teenagers of the 2020s will be looking for the same nostalgia fix as us teenagers of the 1980s. And they'll still be telling their kids that they don't make music like they used to.

Yep. There are a lot of us in our fifties that are nostalgic for the '80s, but people in their forties love '90s music, just like my parents think that music peaked in the '60s. It's kind of weird to think about it, but in 30 years, people in care homes will be moaning about their painful hip joints and knees while they shuffle around to "classic pop" from 2010.

Hahaha. Many of the originals were done on analog synths though.
@reneotten22887 жыл бұрын
True WingChun Thanks for your detailed explanation. All I know is that Jump was done on an analog synth. I agree with you that FM synths sound ok too, I bought a DX7 in 1991 and still have it and even though I mainly play vintage analog synths, I appreciate the sound of the DX7. I am also considering buying a Roland D50, that was an FM synth too, right? Honestly I didn't know where I stopped liking digital sounds but it must have been when they transited to sampled/wav or whatever it's called. I also don't like the sound of modelling synths, I do have a King Korg but never touch it, I will probably sell it again. But all this is a matter of taste, people who do enjoy these modern sounds should use them and make music with them because in general music and making music is just awesome.
@jean-louispech49217 жыл бұрын
+True WingChun no only yamaha did FM synths they had the patent on that. The concurency of DX synth were mostly digital synth with PCM banks, and a digital filter. But at the begining of the 80's there was numerous analog synths like the popular JP serial from roland.
@SJNstudios7 жыл бұрын
+Rieni Otten The Roland D50 is a digital subtractive and sample based synth. Samples are typically used for transients, or sometimes to add "colour". It is a powerful synth with a lot of potential, but I find many of the presets to be somewhat dated. Good example of an early virtual-analog. Programming it is a PITA, like almost everything from that era.

A lot of that was intentional. Devo was one of the first and influenced others. It represented human loss or submission (or DEeVOlution) to the new technology. The Buggles "Age of Plastic" used mechanical sounding synths for the same reason. After that a lot of people copied the sound (e.g. Van Halen) without understanding what it implied.

@@anderseldersson6871 Twice is having a comeback on 26th , this is the first time that they're gonna do a disco concept since back then they are more in cute, light concept. The article I read said that this EYES WIDE OPEN ( album name ) is gonna be a disco concept and has synth riffs style etc.

I am a keyboardist and love the sounds of 70s era synths. The electronic parts were caveman primitive but the sounds generated by the "programmers", were 1st generation ear candy...a mere tease of what was possible besides late 60s/ early 70s science fi sound effects!!! Search youtube for the original LAND OF YHE LOST TV SHOW episodes. Pure moog fills,but so cheesy. Then along comes the Yahmaha DX7 and basically everything 80s was played on this machine,and later clones and digital ROM Playback rigs like the quintessential Roland D50 and Korg M and T series taking us into the 90s. So who played what on what rigs?? DX7 users included Journey, Hall and Oates, Berlin, Tears for Fears, The Cure,Talking Heads, Nightranger. I am not sure if Depeche Mode used it or the D 50, but Richard Marx, Howard Jones, Cutting Crew, did. Rush used Moog analog products including bass pedals. Notice I hadn't mentioned Genesis because Tony Banks used just about every brand's synth (except Oberheim to the best of my knowledge). He used a Mellotron, Arp Pro Soloist (string synth sounds), ARP Quadra, Prophet /sequential circuits, think Abacab, Moog bass pedals, Dx7, Korg products in the 90s like the wave station and O1W, but 1dt generation samplers were all E-Mus including the E-Mulator 2 and 3.. think Invisible Touch album. The same plethora of brands goes for Rick Wakeman of Yes, and Keith Emerson of ELP. All great musicians, great gear for the time, and lots of great songs that never made it to the cheese fest played in this video. I love Van Halen, but Jump is Van Halen's song that everyone who says I play keys....plays. Just like GUITAR classic Cocaine and Smoke on the Water are the first 2 songs beginners play. So for that reason I avoid playing Jump, Take on Me, Final Countdown, Axel F, Herbie Hancock's Rockitt, and stereotypical songs. Overrated pop,played on great equipment. The Who used ARP 2600 and subsequent products and made classic songs. Sequencer based riffs was Pete Townshend's forte, later bands to use such riffs was Duran Duran ...think Rio. Billy Joel used the Korg T series for his 90s tour, but his 80s synth sounds had no dominant sound from a brand . This would be a helluva thread to make into a video from the aforementioned bands and synths!!!
