What Columbus found was the modern island of San Salvador though it’s exact location is still debated as no satellite or diary entry had ever fully seen the island as it may have sunk due to earthquake but we don’t know. Columbus was actually not exactly a good man as technically he was a privateer hired by Spain to loot any treasure he found. He was in essence a hired pirate that could not attack Spanish ships. It was quite normal as many famous ship captains were privateers like sir Francis Drake who went around the known world but was hired to loot any ship that wasn’t English. Columbus discovered the Taino tribe which was completely unknown to science at the time. Europeans knew a bit about Africa and some of the Masai and some Egyptian cultures but nothing about the other side of the globe. Unfortunately the Taino contracted a deadly plague that nearly wiped them out because they had no immunity to what it was. The plague acted very similar to Black Death but much worse as it shared symptoms with Ebola and blood diseases. This virus still stumps modern science because we still don’t fully know what it does or even know how to treat it. The virus has however disappeared as fast it came as in after one year it went away. Columbus was blamed as he may have spread the virus unintentionally.
