I ride from Moyale to Turbi, for my first ride in Kenya, in East Africa. The day is nice and easy, but when I reach Turbi, I find a village without electricity and with almost no food, and nobody wants to help me recharge my batteries...

@Kino: wow - thanks again. PS: the flat rocky desert land you will be riding through between Turbi/Moyale & Marsabit is known as "Diida Galgaluu" [=plains of darkness]. The same used to be part of a massive volcanic lake. The remaining part of that huge lake or an in-land-sea is today's Lake Turkana [ex-Lake Rudolf]. Still, Lake Turkana is a massive lake which extends for about 300kms north to south & has an average width of about 35kms (?). The lake is to your west & runs parallel to the road you are-on. This same desolate-looking desert landscape is a very rich archeological site where the bones of some of the earliest human ancestors have been found by famous archeologist such as Richard Leaky. Safe trip & all the best.

He is such an adventurous soul. Such people always make the best documentaries, because they get the real info. In Nairobi we are given scare stories about that area, but as Yves has shown they are mostly nice people. In that difficult situation, they are happy to help even with food

From a expat of 25 years in Africa: You are amazing and a perfect ambassador. I have seen most of your trip, and you are flawless in every interaction, perfect balance of safety, politeness and fun. Nevermind the contraption you are using to cross the continent, OMG! I wish you all the best.

Do you know, the territory until Marsabit was part of Ethiopian territory? The British acquired it after signing a treaty in which they pledged not to invade Ethiopia, thus ensuring Ethiopia's sovereignty.

I stayed in Moyale for a wonderful month in August 2011, during which there were some cross-border resource-based armed conflicts. I was advised to stay inside my guesthouse and I didn't see anything at all. The people of Moyale were also not too bothered by it.

Hahhaha. The ones telling you to remain indoors were friendly and concerned about you. They hate seeing foreigners or non-locals suffering from such hostilities.

@@lightning369: I was living right on the border, where you cross from Ethiopia. The local Kenyans who worked in my guesthouse and in other businesses in the building were all worried, and some had families who were involved. We ALL did what we could to avoid provoking unnecessary conflict. So what are you talking about? I didn’t get any special treatment.
