Private equity only levels the playing field until the B1G and SEC go the private equity route.

Hey, why not bring in private equity! College football has already been ruined by ESPN, the NIL, the transfer portal, and conference realignment. Nobody builds a competitive team anymore, they just buy them. I miss the days of 15 bowl games and the Big East.

Couz, I just watched a 5 minute video from CNBC on this topic, and I learned a million times more than I ever learned from Flugauer on this subject. Again, I'm NOT against private equity. I am AGAINST irrational decisions. If a university believes that it is right for them, OK. The worst thing is trying to do this at a conference level which is Flugauer's default position. Yormark does NOT have West Virginia's best interest at his heart.

Not sure how BYU feels about this. I know they aren't into speculation, and I don't see them being willing to sell off parts of the University. They probably are for new streams of revenue, but what their threshold for risk is. I was surprised when they agreed to the gambling partnership.

Basically, we are screwed. With the direction that college sports is heading there is no way that we will be able to compete with the schools with the most money. Money (greed) has ruined college sports.
@tarheel740632 минут бұрын
Honestly, why is this news? The TX/OK news ~3.5 years ago focused attention on the growing revenue gap. When the USC/UCLA news dropped ~2.5 years ago, that confirmed that important schools (if not everyone) had deemed peer Tier 1 revenue a necessity to compete. We are now just seeing more effects come to fruition. The BIG12's problem is that instead of accepting its relegation down to a new Tier 2, it continues to try and compete, which are efforts that will fail in the longer term. Far better to focus on being the best Tier 2 (from its perspective) after the dust settles. There were eventually too many Tier 1 programs in the P5 structure when it started to collapse. A market correction does not equate to greed.
@shaggyofwv22 минут бұрын
It has a lot to do with greed. Money is all that matters now. Most of the ACC will be Tier 2 teams, except for Clemson and FSU. Even SMU, that dominated the conference, will be tier 2.
@tarheel740613 минут бұрын
@@shaggyofwv My rule of thumb is that roughly the same number of schools from each "group" will be consolidated into the final Tier 1 SEC/B1G. The BIG8/SWC group had 6 consolidated already. That suggests 5 more from the original P5 ACC (MARYLAND being already consolidated), likely: For sure: UVA UNC Most likely among: DUKE CLEMSON FSU MIAMI Outside of KANSAS, more from the B1G8/SWC group is unlikely. The ACC will likely get more than 6 given their higher relative value to both the SEC and B1G. Again, a market correction is not greed. The now Tier 2 BIG12 demanding to be treated as a Tier 1 is arguably greed.

If the Big12 is only going to get 1 bid every year in the CFP, what is the harm in dropping to a G5 conference? I guess what it would come down to is, is the Big12 TV revenue better than what a G5 CFP appearance revenue would be.
@CouzsCornerSports5 сағат бұрын

The reports back in July were that the Big12 conference were in talks with PE and had quite different numbers than what you were saying in this video. It was an influx of 1 billion dollars in exchange for 20 percent ownership rights going to the PE folks. They’re (PE) going to want way more than 20 percent ownership rights for 6 billion dollars that you spoke on in your video. Probably more like 100 percent. 😂
@God1stForever4 сағат бұрын
Their not letting SMU go, their boosters have way more money than any other school, and the business connection and being 14 miles from CFP headquarters, SMU should shoot way up the list, those valuations are from when they were G5 in the ACC, especially if SMU can make some noise in the CFP, also Stanford has a 38.5 Billion endowment

WVU would be so much better off in the ACC having 2 rivals like Pitt & Virginia Tech to play every year, and a ton less travel, so would Cincinnati as well
@tarheel74062 сағат бұрын
That's not what the vast majority of WVU fans have been saying for at least ~2 years now. If invited, I think WVU would be better off in a future rebuilt tier 2 ACC than in the already Tier 2 BIG12 due to several factors, but that's admittedly from my personal perspective, preferences, etc.

One borrows to invest; one doesn't borrow to consume. Why is the BIG12 a Tier 2? I would say because of lower academic schools with smaller fanbases which succeed less athletically. How would private equity permanently change any of this with reasonable certainty? Will academic missions change? Will state populations materially increase? Will programs permanently rise to lite or blue status?
@TimeWaspСағат бұрын
@tarheel7406 have you heard of the academic accolades of Miss state, Ole miss, Alabama, lsu, ... I can keep going... the only high academic institutions are Texas, A&M and Vanderbilt... Being good academically has nothing to do with this.
@tarheel7406Сағат бұрын
@@TimeWasp a) Academics increase media value per viewer. They also clearly improve recruiting, at least in non-revenue sports, which has ripple effects. b) The lower academic SEC schools are still mostly large flagships with large extended fanbases. Denying the realities here doesn't aid this discussion.

@CouzsCornerSports13 сағат бұрын
@@Goeers206 that is a sublease from ESPN so the revenue doesn’t increase. It just means more exposure.
@tarheel740626 минут бұрын
@@CouzsCornerSports To be fair, if ESPN resold those rights for materially more than it paid, that would evidence some increase in value. Most likely ESPN has more Tier 3 rights than it needs/wants and TNT needed content. I maintain that it will take some time for the market to efficiently value the new Tier 2 conference level.

Damn, I'm only 24 minutes into this video and I gotta admit, though it's really informative, and interesting, it's also very disheartening, and doesn't really leave much room for real hope in the future!! If we are that far behind, I don't see how they could ever really catch up... I guess maybe a great coaching and some luck could get ya there, but even if we "buy the best players we can afford", the other schools and conferences that have so much more money are buying even better players!! I guess that the only thing we can truly hope for is that the guys that WVU do get are 1000% bought into the culture and the plan, and that we can keep a group together long enough to be a great unit, which is extremely hard if not impossible these days!! Hopefully we can at least stay relevant, and can catch lightning in a bottle from time to time! Idk.. 😞.. LET'S GOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS 👏👏🏈🏀🇺🇸

Football Playoff Appearances, 1st Rd Wins, Nattys (per Wiki 2015-2024) ACC: 08-04-2 (Includes 1 of 2 ND appearances) B12: 02-01-0 (Excludes OK; includes CINCY) B1G: 12-05-2 (Includes ORE & WASH) PAC: 00-00-0 (Excludes ORE & WASH) SEC: 17-10-6 (Includes OK & TEXAS) BCS Runner Ups - Champs (2000 - 2014) ACC: 4-03 (Includes VATECH, MIAMI, ND) B12: 0-00 (Excludes NEB, OK, TX) B1G: 5-02 (Includes NEB, USC, ORE) PAC: 0-00 (Excludes USC, ORE) SEC: 6-10 (Includes OK, TEX) I also suspect that any value study uses current media contracts. The ACC's is known to be far below actual value, so only good faith estimates can be used to adjust for discussion purposes. I currently classify both VATECH and NCSTATE as general peers with MICHST, but the former have better locations due to demo trends. The B1G has reached its highwater mark. The Southeast and Southwest are clearly waxing economically and in demos, which impacts athletics in those regions.
