I just got my F150 Hybrid last week and cannot wait to attach it to my trailer when I get it next month. Already I love the power in the back for charging batteries on the road. I'm 50 years old and 120 pounds, and a solo traveler, so not having to constantly deal with 2 45 pound generators is great for me! And I also won't have to worry about locking them up at campgrounds. Win all around for me! Great video, thanks.

Thanks for the confirmation review. Use my powerboost to run my moveable shop out in the woods...band saw, table saw, drill press, planer etc. Hate noisy generators. I often run it all day. This truck is fantastic. Amazingly the truck has a better tow rating than the first generation F-350 power stroke crew cab srw it replaced. The generator and the tow rating sold me. Have tested both extensively as described and hauling nice loads of lumber and logs. Great ride too! I would have been happy with an XL with vinyl and minimum creature comforts. But, got talked into a Lariat. Nana likes it so it was worth the extra bucks. Last...it is so nice to drive up to a drive through or talk to a neighbor without having to shut the truck off. On the road unloaded I average about 25mpg. Towing my trailer loaded about 13. Great truck. Love the quiet. Love the utility. Love always having an emergency generator tuned up and ready to go.

For anyone interested in the math on this, technically a gallon of gasoline contains 33.7kWh worth of energy. So, if you had a theoretical (but impossible) generator that was 100% efficient, you would be able to get 33700 watts out of every gallon of gas, or enough to run this camper for around 13 hours or so. Gas engines are around 17% efficient on average, plus energy losses in charging the battery, inverter losses and heat losses in the cables, etc. All in, you should be getting around 4 to 5 kWh worth of electricity from each gallon of gas. Since the truck has a 30 gallon gas tank, one could probably run the camper 50 to 60 hours of day time use with the A/C on, and probably closer to 120 hours of total use between day and night. So, 5 days worth is probably a pretty good estimate...

BTW, this is why Tesla's crush gas vehicles in 'fuel economy'. Gas vehicles run around 15-20% efficient efficient, with newer, smaller engines running better, closer to maybe 30%. Tesla custom engineered motors will out accelerate any car on the market, and are around 96% efficient.
@redbaron6805
@redbaron6805 3 жыл бұрын
@@colinpovey2904 Exactly. The combustion engine is around 35% peak efficient at a single RPM, but is only 17% efficient on average. Electric motors are over 90% efficient, which is the reason why you can have the performance of a Turbo V8 or a V12, yet have better fuel efficiency than a small 4 cylinder engine...

I'd like to see someone run it for at least 8 hours. Fill up before and after the test to know exactly how much fuel it used, and what it cost. I think that would be the best test to see how efficient it actually is.
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk 3 жыл бұрын
Impossible test really with way too many variables. I did this test during the heart of the day because an overnight test has just too many variables. What happens if the weather changes? The temperature drops? The wind picks up? We turn down the A/C because the camper holds the cold air better at night? Running it during the day for a set period of time shows the worst case scenario. You can take the result and multiple it by 4 to get the 8 hours of the test, which I talk about, and you'll see fuel usage will be around a quarter of a tank, if that, like I said.
@skidoomxz550x
@skidoomxz550x 3 жыл бұрын
@@Pickuptrucktalk I don't agree that it's impossible at all. I mentioned an 8 hour test because I don't believe a shorter test would use enough fuel to give an accurate result. My point is that it would be nice to know that with the AC running how many litres of fuel you can expect the truck to burn. As an RV owner and frequent traveler this would be valuable information. Especially when boondocking for a week. That way you can decide whether it's better to use a standalone generator, or the truck from a cost perspective. The problem with your test is that you went off of what the EVIC displayed for miles to empty. This isn't reliably measurable in terms of how many litres are burned. Also, based on the data from many other RV owners theres no where near ¼ tank of usage after only 8 hours of run time. I've enjoyed all your videos on the Powerboost, and had been looking out for this one for a couple months since you mentioned it initially. I was just bummed that the litres per hour powering the RV AC still hasn't been tested.

@@skidoomxz550x problem is SOC of the battery at start and finish would need to be calculated. Also you’d have a variable load… you’d instead need to run constant loads like heat guns
@skidoomxz550x
@skidoomxz550x 3 жыл бұрын
@@cybertrk Not really, the battery has such a low capacity that I don't think it would make a difference. Based on all the data I've seen the truck runs for about 4 minutes with the engine off, then about 1 minute with the engine on. So even if you're fully charged in the beginning it'll drain it back down in approx. 4 minutes. Cranking the AC right down would give you a constant load. Even better would be to test it on an average weather day in your area. Let it cycle on and off at whatever temp you typically set it to. That way you can get the cost on an "average" day. This would allow you to assume for "X" amount more or less on a warmer or cooler day.

Which is why the NYPD LOVES Ford Fusion Hybrids. Most police cars run constantly. I don't remember the numbers for amount of gas only saved (they save not only gas but less maintenance as well), but their actual comparison figures that that, even allowing for the higher initial costs, the Hybrid cars saved the NYPD more than $10,000 per car over the typical 3 year life of a squad car.

One would think you could also plug something in to the 120 V plug that draws on the second gauge. You could run a coffee pot or other device off of an extension cord and it wouldn’t affect the 30A circuit draw. Is that correct? I do like the idea of having another source of electricity. I use a CPAP which drains my RV batteries at night. Sometimes the furnace won't run at high altitudes, probably because voltage is low on those batteries. I understand the fuel tank is smaller and payload is less on the PowerBoost as compared to the max tow package Ecoboost which has a 36-gallon tank. Considering mpg on an ecoboost is quite bleak when towing and payload on 1/2 tons are low already, one must evaluate the net value of replacing fuel and payload by adding an inverter and the associated battery. If you haul fuel and an inverter in the back of your truck, that also reduces payload. Mine has remote control and is built into a steel lockbox on the rear bumper of the trailer.

I haven't seen any hints from Ram or Chevy they are planning any Hybrid trucks, except for the mild Hybrid available over a decade ago.

A typical gas generator and most likely the F150 can produce about 10 kW-h of energy per gallon of gas. 1,700 watts or 1.7kW for 2 hours is 3.4 kW-h. That is the equivalent of 1/3 gallon of gasoline. My guess is that you burned around 1/3 gallon for 2 hours. Or 1/6 gallon per hour. Or 6 hours per gallon. with a 30 gallon tank it should run 180 hours but that assumes AC on all the time. Most likely AC is off 50% of the time. That should handle you for a week of camping. By the way, I believe the Powerboost is a much better option than the Lightning.

The challenge for electric trucks is the significant range drop with load or towing. Range can drop by half or more with heavier loads/tows. Then add very cold or extremely hot climates, winds, uphill grades, and voila range anxiety to the max. Lastly, all that and try draining your Lighting battery further by plugging your rv into it. The Powerboost is arguably superior. Even better, having the Powerboost come with a 5 kWh or more battery (reduce generator run time).

I just want to point out your amp math. It is correct BUT it's only correct when you are using a 120v system. Like house power. If you go to a 12v system it will be 12v per amp or a 220v system it will be 220w per amp. It's called ohm's law. I would recommend checking it out instead of always using the 120w per amp calculation. Basically Voltage = current (amps) x resistance. So with a little algebra you can calculate it to watts= Amps x Volts.

@@philipnagel7118 You bring up an interesting point which I can't find an answer to frankly. I found this plug through searching RV groups and now I'm wondering about the volts myself. The sources I'm reading are all over the place from no big deal, to tripping a breaker and then to holy cow your entire RV will burn down. Really strange. I know the maximum load rating is 110 volts and if you send more through it, it should smoke or melt. That's what I SHOULD have experienced, but I didn't. Also, if the 220 volts hit the camper, I should have popped breakers. That didn't happen neither. Lots to learn apparently and I still don't have a clear answer. I know AMPS are more of a pull versus push situation, but Volts should be sending maximum power at all times. The best I can figure is the plug has a way to downgrade the volts, but I have no confirmation of this. Interestingly, nobody talks about making sure to plug into the 110 volt side of a generator even with this plug. If it was a big deal, I'd assume that would be shouted to the heavens.
