I was 5 or 6 when i got the NES for Christmas. I remember my mom actually telling me that our doctor recommended it for hand eye coordination, mental stimulation, logic, etc. Just don't let it replace outdoor activities. Kids of my generation benefited both from the stimulation of video games and playing outside. Kids today just have an imbalanced life.

My sister is bipolar and during the Covid period of 2020, she was having an overwhelming number of manic episodes and one day she asked me how I was keeping calm and I said playing games and keeping my mind occupied on anything but Covid. So, when she received one of those checks the government sent everyone, I told her to buy herself a Switch and Animal Crossing and so she did, and has since started playing games almost daily, and now she doesn't have near as many manic episodes and I know for sure it's the video games and she even smiles now something she hadn't done in a long time. Mr. Morris, On 4/15/23 I suffered a stroke and am very lucky to be alive. I continue to recover and still have some issues. I was primarily hit cognitively. I had been a gamer my entire life and the stroke really impacted by ability to continue. When I discussed this with my neurologist he told me it was -vital- to keep playing games. He said, without any debate, that playing games was the single best method to rework and work out neural plasticity. I've since moved onto another neurology team-at a very well established and known neurology clinic and my care team there says the same thing. Thank you for this video. A lot of people think I'm full of crap when I tell them playing video games (or trying) is part of my recovery. Love the channel, keep up the fantastic work! People who think watching movies is a more logical form of entertainment than video games really baffle me. In video games, you interact with the story and you shape the events. It develops your thinking skills, your reflexes, and sometimes your intelligence when you encounter complex puzzles. It makes more sense for me than sitting for two hours watching stuff happening in a movie. That's why video games are almost my only form of digital entertainment today in my late 30s.

Oddly enough, gaming can be physically beneficial too. I was in a pretty serious motorcycle accident back in 2013. One of my more serious injuries was to my left hand. I managed to snap the fused joint between my wrist and knuckles backwards and had some nerve damage to my pinky finger causing it to stick out away from my hand and I was unable to pull it back in on my own. I was not about to be trapped n bed for 4 months just staring at the ceiling, so I modified my cast to be able to use a keyboard. This forced me to use my pinky for the shift and control buttons as well as the rest of my hand to game with. When I finally started physical therapy, my therapist was amazed at my condition. She was convinced from my surgery notes that I would never use my hand again and said the what I did, while not recommended, probably saved my hand. Even the surgeon was shocked at my level of use during my follow up to remove the pins in my hand.

The Hippocampus has a standing theta rhythm of approx. 7 bps. When we are stimulated by the environment it moves up to 10 bps and the entire brain that is integrated with it revs up to process the novelty and develop a response. A fun game keeps the Hippocampus buzzing along at 10 which has amazing benefits. You know that feeling when you get bored with a game and don't want to play it anymore? The game landscape has been mapped to your mind and the hippocampus has returned to its operational 7bps. I just had this happen with Black Myth, super interesting until chapter 3 then nothing new to map and now I don't want to play anymore. Nothing like this happens when you watch tv shows. I will not take lectures from people who feel superior watching tele all evening.

May this message reach ever more ears! I re-discovered video games when I retired in 2008 and was so HAPPY to see how beautifully they had evolved since the 1980s. I'm in my upper 60s now: I play a musical instrument and sing live, and even play video games on camera, no less. I love that my brain works, solves puzzles, feels excitement and wonder, enjoys beauty - and gaming has played a huge role there for me. Someone once said to me that they were so bored in retirement. I suggested they play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for its beauty, music, immersion and fun... They said they didn't want to rot their brains. I hope this inaccurate viewpoint can shift because many seniors who may be limited physically could still engage in gaming and just feel so much better. The first time I actually beat the Trial of the Sword in Breath of the Wild in Master Mode had me literally dancing with glee.

My wife is a clinical therapist and some of her best kids talk and do therapy sessions better while playing Fortnite believe it or not. Video games are even used at Seattle children’s hospital during recovery, a lot of people think it is there to give the kids something to do and while that is true to a point, they are actually there for so much more. I wonder why they didn't include strategy (especially grand strategy) and turn based games. Games that require less moment to moment decision making and fast reflexes, but more long term planning and resource management. I wonder what the effects of games like Total War and Europa Universalis would be on people's brains. The same counts for strategy and turn based RPGs. The gameplay is slower and has less moment to moment decision making, but it does require you to think ahead more in longer terms, often requires you to create and set up synergies, and to build teams that function as a cohesive whole.

I ended up giving up the PS5 to my younger brother, who had just gotten married. Now, I’m back to gaming on my PC, and surprisingly, my wife doesn’t seem to mind at all.

Great video Clayton, not enough is said about this - and what a great time it is to be a gamer too 😊

There is just one huge gargantian problem with video games, that is if you let it control your addiction, you will play and play and play, the next moment you realise your in your 40's or 50's single unemployed and fat.

I'm old. Been casually playing video games since the first Atari (late 70s). It definitely helped me thinking outside the box. As for addiction, an unknown neighbor down the street was hooked on World of Warcraft. His wife would come over as I was working on my motorcycles to play a different joystick. I had no clue... Until later.. Video games are definitely a blessing if played in moderation. 😊

Classic JRPG games in the 90's helped me hugely. Constant reading, mapping, planning, number juggling, economies etc.

I played a little blue and orange learning game console, an SNES, N64, GameCube, PS2, PSP, Wii, and DS growing up. They helped satiate my desire to learn and solve interactive puzzles, learn to space jumps, etc. The Legend of Zelda taught me words I didn't know if like Wield or Come Hither.

Playing a healthy amount of time on video games really does help recharge the old batteries and improve the mood. in fact, super monkey ball helps with your reflexes and the Japanese doctors who played super monkey ball improved on their surgical skills let alone problem-solving

MAGA Make America Godly Again... I am 68 and have been playing video games since the Atari 2600 first came out. I have always thought they were good for eye hand co-ordination, puzzle solving, logic problems and all kinds of things that keep my mind healthy. Unlike sitting in front of a TV where your mind turns into a sponge with little or no brain activity.

I play video games every day. I work 10hrs 5-6 days a week however, so in order to make sure I can game I bought a new 3ds xl an modded it. I have a lot of handhelds and its become my daily driver when I am away from home.

Video games seriously helped me out. I had brain surgery, which gave me hand/eye coordination and balance problems. Doing Wii Fit Plus along with Link's Crossbow Training and some DS games that focused on eye tracking made me recover so quickly that my physical therapist was amazed.

Jamie Madigan has done a lot of work surveying the whole psychological literature. Super recommend his work. The general vibe seems to be that the evidence is not as decisive as you put it to be, either for or against videogames. You have one study for, another against, and so on.

Games like Deus Ex and their narratives can awaken you to the reality of our world as well. Imagine if everyone had played the original DX before Covid, no one would have fallen for it.

Predictive programming is strong, people will just brush it off and say it's just a videogame, the themes are the same in most games because most developers are owned by blackrock

I am a big supporter of video games for mental health and brain function improvement. I am over 60 and have been playing video games since getting an Atari 5200. Currently I am playing RPGs and MMOs for the social, escapism and goal-setting benefits. I feel sharper, younger and have a better memory. My same age or younger friends don't play or even seem to understand, but I would recommend it to anyone.
