I've always thought that Tom Riddle would not have accepted being poor for long after he started attending Hogwarts. He demands the respect of all around him, and it would be difficult to obtain that respect in Slytherin as a seemingly muggleborn boy with no money (this assumes that Slytherin was already full of wealthy muggle haters at the time). As such, I imagine that, following his first or second year, he would have spent a few days walking through the wealthy areas of London, using magic to pickpocket everyone around him. He would then take the money to Gringotts and exchange it for galleons, sickles, and knuts, as I doubt the notoriously disdainful goblins would care where a human got his money. If ever Voldemort needed money for something as an adult, I imagine he would have done something similar, or just used some of his savings (he doesn't seem like the type to waste money) from his decade or so working at Borgin and Burke's. I don't think he would have relied on his followers for money, as that would imply to them that he didn't have any money of his own. Furthermore, it's been stated by Dumbledore that Voldemort would never have used a Philosopher's Stone for immortality because he would dislike relying on the Elixir of Life for survival, and I imagine that the same dislike would apply to relying on his followers' money to get him the things he needed.

Correction after Voldemort murdered his father and Muggle grandparents. He left in the books JK Rowling gives no indication that Voldemort ever inherited his father's estate. He might have done something with it after he had risen to power a second time. In the books Tom Riddle's house had gone through several owners before being bought by a very rich man who was it was said in the village a to keep it for tax reasons. Voldemort might have decided to use his old father's house as a base of operations or some sort of headquarters though.

I’m not sure Voldemort cared for money. Maybe he did have money? He was incredibly powerful. He could have looted money from the earlier wizarding wars and stashed it away. He might have never needed it, but maybe his Death Eaters needed it? He may have realized the muggles valued it and took it from muggles when he attacked the regular muggle world. Money is still valuable in the magical world, what a cool thing to think it. But I don’t think Voldemort cared to much, he did care for magic and pushed his magical limits further than anybody.

I believe Voldy is too proud to ask for money from anyone. Including the Malfoys. It would make him look weak. And it would make him look like he has to depend on the Malfoys or anyone in general. It also make sense to me, the death eaters received salary. I wonder how much. But for even campaign in Britain, he sure did needed money. I like the premise, but it’s flawed. But further, we know he didn’t inherit the house (or likely assets but we know the house), Frank Bryce tells us the house was taken and bought and sold several times over the years. @Longshanks16903 жыл бұрын
How would Voldemort prove his rights to the Riddle Estate though? His grandfather Thomas Riddle would probably have already have made plans in his will for the estate to go elsewhere in the event that Tom Sr died unexpectedly, and if Tom made it clear he didn’t consider their marriage legitimate, their children would be struck out of the will so that complicates things even further. So it may be the case that Tom Jr would have to prove in court that his parents were even married, and I can easily see Thomas going to great efforts to destroy all traces of that family embarrassment. Further, accurate paternity tests did not arise until the 1960s, so that option is also out in the immediate aftermath of their deaths in 1943. Legally speaking, Voldemort has a case, but I can hardly see him bothering with the effort of trying to fight it through the Muggle legal system anyway. Now, if there was such an alternative heir aside from Tom Jr, Voldemort could simply use the Imperius Curse to force them to sign the estate over to him, but this has not been explained and I think it’s a huge leap to suggest that Voldemort would inherit the Riddle Estate at any rate. I think the heavy implication of the books is that after killing his family, he never once looked back at the house again until he died the first time, which is why it fell into disrepair and decay over the decades as no one actually inherited it and it just became the empty home on the hill no one actually owned anymore.
@whiteowl40973 жыл бұрын
As far as his Riddle side of the family, he would have had to prove legally that he was the heir to prove he had a claim to the fortune. Even back then they had to have registered Tom Junior's birth (his birth certificate), with the city or village or even the county. That would have legitimized his claim to the Riddle fortune. But that didn't happen, all they had was his mother's info and nothing about his bio father. That's where the idea for Voldemort having the Riddle fortune isn't plausible.

The only time he would have needed money without actually having the means to get any (not in any meaningful or legitimate manner) was during his time at Hogwarts. I have to assume that there are provisions made in Hogwarts for purchasing the necessary items a student would need in the event that a young orphaned wizard is about to receive his Hogwarts letter if said orphan truly has no inheritance or relatives left. Had he tried to earn big money from shaking people down while at school, his sudden prosperity would have, no doubt, been noticed by school staff and admin as he would suddenly start spending at Hogsmeade for example. Too much unnecessary attention. At Borgin and Burkes, he was not after money but who's to say he didn't make any? Given how he was going about things with Mrs Smith, his other special clients might have made themselves useful as well. Giving him commissions and whenever they happened to have something he wanted, dying while their property became his.

My personal head canon is that some time after Tom murdered his paternal family, he tracked down the attorney in charge of the Riddle estate, "convinced him that he was the rightful heir of their fortune, and "persuaded" him to sign everything over to him. From there, he quietly sold the Riddle manor to a muggle and then went over to Gringotts and exchanged his muggle inheritance for galleons. Although, there is no evidence in the books that Tom did any of this, it would have been very foolish of him not to make any attempt to claim the Riddle's vast wealth for himself.

It was mentioned in the 7th book several times that you cannot just transform material into food, so presumably wizards would need to buy food just as muggles. With respect to inheritance, it's doesn't make sense that Tom Riddle Jr inherited his father's wealth, the family didn't even knew he existed, and it seems unlikely that Lord Voldemort would have gone to any length to confirm his connection to his dead ancestors, a necessity to inherit their property, and also alerting the wizarding community to the connection and making him a prime suspect in their murder...

I was never thinking that young Tom Riddle Jr would actually get any of the Riddle fortune, as i am not sure he was ever legitimately noted as Tom Riddle Sr:s son by muggles, otherwise there would be a bigger deal of him in an orphanage. Legal Family ties might be handled differently in Britain.
@Azaghal19883 жыл бұрын
I don't think Riddle-Manor went to him. As far as I remember it basically was not claimed by anyone, fell into disrepair and was later bought by someone rich for tax reasons. If he claimed it, he would also need to reveal himself, giving the gardeners claim of seeing a pale youth the night the Riddles were killed much more believability. But by the time of the novels it was basically a ruin noone wanted to live in. Also there is no reason to believe he got the Gaunt Manor, since noone knew he was a Gaunt except for Dumbledore who needed to sift through the memories of a nearly dead madman to get this information. Claiming these Assets would make him vulnerable, and I think thats the last thing he would do. He didn't need to, his followers were more then enough financial backing, since the Lestranges, Blacks, Malfoys and other pureblood-backers had near endless assets he had full use of.

He could Polyjuice potion himself to handle it all legally I guess but on that same token he despised muggles. So I would assume if he did get ahold of their money he would change it all to galleons to make it “Wizard” money. Plus killing that side of his family was like one of the first things he did before he even left school right? He has such a superiority complex I imagine he would hate growing up with nothing, especially when his peers in Slytherin often come from wealth.

I think Muggle-World Domination would be Lord Voldemort’s long term goal. First he’d secure his own power in the wizarding world and against Harry Potter. Once there he’d take over the European sectors of the Wizarding World. This would be enough to begin a war with the Muggles but still a little risky; more likely Voldemort’s immortality would see him outlive all other wizards and secure his Power over the rest of the Wizarding world (by submitting or conquering the last ones).

Accio food from unsuspecting people will bypass food charms. No... Since things are charmed, or so powerful that an Accio spell wouldn't work... As for"pulling gold from the ground", this seems very unlikely...
