Sotha Sil. Almalexia. Vivec. Powerful, immortal deities born not of celestial providence, but of flesh and blood and pain. Much has been written of the Tribunal, and how three mere mortals dared reach out and grasp the power of gods with an act so brazen they transformed the world of Tamriel forevermore.

Question of the Week: That voice you hear at 0:36 is a new female voice actor we hired to the team specifically to voice the female dialogue moving forward with the series. We were looking for someone who we could actually picture doing VO for the game itself. What do you think of her? Is she "Elder Scrolls" enough? Is she shoddy enough for the ShoddyCast? Special thanks to our sponsors who allow us to hire voice actors. Doesn't explain well enough the disturbing theory that the tribunal themselves planned the death of Nerevar in order to gain access to the heart, and that Dagoth was his last true servant, staying by the heart to deny them access even though it ultimately twisted him into something unrecognisable
@113Branty
@113Branty 10 жыл бұрын
Wasn't it the Tribunal who murdered Nerevar? Vivec pretty much admits it.
@noleramay6872
@noleramay6872 10 жыл бұрын
The generally accepted theory is that after the Tribunal killed Nerevar and attained divinity, Vivec achieved CHIM and caused a Dragon Break by going back in history to "rewrite" those events. Thus he says that he both killed and did not kill Nerevar since both are technically true.
@113Branty
@113Branty 10 жыл бұрын
Aah right. So I've heard of this CHIM, but not sure what it is exactly. It's when someone realises they're in a fake world and this gives them the ability to shape it as they see fit?
@noleramay6872
@noleramay6872 10 жыл бұрын
Mike Brant Yeah, CHIM in a nutshell is the realization that everything (including yourself) is just the imagination of a figure called the "Godhead" and to retain your existence (I don't exist, but I exist, ie. looking at 1-1 = 0 but still saying that it'll equal 1). Otherwise you'll "zero-sum" and disappear as there's no way you can still logically continue to live. To achieve CHIM is pretty much to become a god. Look at Tiber Septim for one.

+Xander Ellem Perhaps after steady defeat to both the Empire and Dagoth Ur with the weakening of their powers. No, the Tribunal were extremely benevolent in the First and Second Eras, it was the return of Dagoth Ur and the seizing of Keening and Sunder that saw Almalexia and Vivec becoming much less public and interventionist to help their people, and Sotha Sil locking himself away altogether. The removal of their powers saw Almalexia and Sotha Sil become even more insane, as these three, who were once able to defy an Empire and defeat Mehrunes Dagon, were powerless as the Imperials exerted their influence throughout Morrowind, and the leading political figures were all in the pockets of the Empire.

Fun facts: Sotha Sil is depicted as having no legs on shrines in TES3, suggesting he was physically handicapped after becoming a god and possibly before. Vivec is female or possibly a hermaphrodite, which is vaguely hinted in the 36 Lessons of Vivec. Note that Vivec's named spear, Muatra, means "milk-taker", and represents both a literal weapon and metaphorical sexual identity in the sermons.

The Dunmer/Chimer revered Boethia as their god-ancestor. Boethia is the one who lead the Veloth and the Chimer out of Summerset and into Morrowind by revealing to him the Endeavour. Dunmer view harshness and selfish acts (and the Daedra Lords by association) in a different light than most, because they believe these gods are to be used to cut mortals into better shapes.

This is one side of the coin. Why not present the other as well? Like, that Almalexia, Sotha Sil, and Vivec murdered Nerevar for the heart and Dagoth Ur was actually loyal to him, only corrupted and misguided by the time of the game. Ur was the reason the Tribunal had diminished powers, after all. Anyways, by the end of the game I came to believe that in-game theory over the "history" provided by the Tribunal themselves.

@verminjerky
@verminjerky 4 жыл бұрын
Apologies for coming in so late relative to your comment. But I agree. Sotha Sil is a fairly dispassionate (or at least very closed off) person as he's since been characterized. Obviously, at the time this was put out that was not exactly established but it reframes this conversation, and I think it does so realistically. For him to come out and tell Azura to her face that the Daedra suck at godhood now strikes as a bit more than pride and the pursuit of power - on the contrary, it rings pretty true given that the three of them, with no experience, managed to usher in a significantly improved era in Dunmeri culture, and basically shrugged off her curse with none of the pride you'd see in Altmer. Sotha Sil, in particular, took his lumps with the rest of the Dunmer, which you could argue he earned richly given that he's the one who figured out how to use Kagrenac's tools and mouthed off to Azura. At the same time, I could imagine that conversation as an attempt to reason with her and a spectacular failure, or possibly just an outburst from someone who'd had quite enough Daedric bullshit for a lifetime. Things only devolved when Azura finally got her way and the tools to control the Heart of Lorkhan were stolen. Obviously, everything went to hell at that point. Best laid plans of mice and gods, I guess. Realizing you don't have a contingency until the moment you need it was uncharacteristically short-sighted, but everything was more or less fine up until that point, which vindicates the Tribunal more than anything. The irony is that it was Sotha Sil who wound up both the most benevolent and the most detached. He was the most guilty of what he saw as the cardinal sin of the Daedra - their detachment - in the end. As Almalexia herself once accused him of, he cared way too much, and it was his undoing as his compromises and means-to-justify-ends wounded him more and more deeply. You can see their eventual falls in each of their arcs. Sotha Sil withdrew because he was motivated by results and discouraged by suffering, Almalexia lashed out because she was motivated by ego and discouraged by insignificance, and Vivec deserted because he was motivated by transcendence and discouraged by limitations. The less they resembled the Daedra in power, the more they resembled them in their flaws. And they were very flawed. At times, horribly so and often by their own admission. (Well, Vivec's and Sotha Sil's, anyway.) But it's hard to argue with their results, and their results were... godlike. They were arrogant, but at least they genuinely gave a damn. TL;DR: Screw Azura, she was proven wrong in almost every way, except for pointing out the Tribunal's arrogance, and it was a goddamn tragedy what happened to the Dunmer after the fall of the Tribunal. Like them on a personal level or don't, they are objectively the best thing that ever happened to the Dunmer.

The Dunmer flourished once the Tribunal came to power. Sure, having much power and immortality is a nice perk, and they had to kill the first Narvarine, but they had good intentions as well. What makes Azura and the other Deadra so perfect? Azura cursed every Chimer and blamed it all on three elves. I personally like the Tribunal, especially Vivec, as he felt bad for what he and the others did, and went back in time to change that history.

Imagine if Skyrim, with its great and unique dungeons, gameplay, and mods, had the quality of Story Morrowind had, the depth in the factions as Morrowind had, the faction quests Oblivion had, the roleplay from the previous games, and the unforgiving aspects of Morrowind, just how much better it would be. If Skyrim had all these, it would have been, without a doubt, the greatest RPG ever, and the Witcher 3 wouldn't have even been in the conversation. Unfortunately, we should expect the next Elder Scrolls to be ever more mainstream than Skyrim, to have less roleplay, a worse story, shallow factions, and lore that makes no sense.

I've just got to say this, I love the Tribunal. I love everything that they did for Morrowind or Resdayn. I love every single structure and monument and city that was made because of them. I love that such a rich and beautiful culture was forged because of their rise to power. I love that Morrowind as we know it from TES 3, is such a beautiful and rich place. There is so much Lore and Canon from the land that I am astonished on a daily basis. Sure they may have killed Indoril Nerevar, and betrayed Azura, but they everything abou tthe land is so beautiful. The Tribunal didn't go mad, or start killing people, they made beautiful and wondrous things and places. The land itself is steeped in mystery and intrigue, something to be explored on a higher level. And the project Tamriel rebuilt just adds to all of that. What I'm trying to say is, the Tribunal made Morrowind a beautiful place full of everything a nerd like me loves, and I love them for that. Without them, the Morrowind region would just be another dull Altmer place, but with them, it is such a beautiful and lustrous and rich land. Thank you Tribunal, thank you for making Morrowind a beautiful place for me to lose myself in!

I like Morrowind but there were many problems with that land, like all places in Tamriel. I love how as the Nerevarine you could try to fix those problems. Slavery was terrible under all 5 houses including house Hlaalu, which had members of the house setting up organizations to free the slaves but also had one of the worst and largest plantations and terrible slave treatment. There was mass corruption in both Imperial and traditional Dunmer organizations alike. After all the work that I as the Nerevarine did to try to fix these problems I am saddened that I would leave this land for Akavir and leave it to its demise. All that effort put in to making this land a better place, slavery abolished and then, wham Red Mountain erupting and Argonians killing people. I do wish that I could have done something to help against this and the Oblivion crisis in Morrowind. For the Great House Telvanni and the visions of Master Ayron!

Er, they kinda did go mad. Well, not Vivec. Sotha Sil became obsessed with his Clockwork City, to the point of it being near absurd. And Almalexia? She grew so afraid and paranoid, and plotted the death of Sotha Sil, he compatriot. She also plotted to defeat the Nerevarine, as well.
@emielwarnier6324
@emielwarnier6324 9 жыл бұрын
"Sotha Sil in his foolish pride went as far as mock Azura and question her authority." It wasn't in any way foolish for Seht to do that, seeing that all three of them were Gods, Azura wouldn't have been able to destroy them. With just Seht and Ayem being able to defeat Dagon (mind you, Sotha Sil is the most powerful of the three), they would easily be able to also defeat Azura with all three of them united. Seht was the most powerful and wise individual to have ever lived on Nirn, he created the city of Sotha Sil that would become one of the structures that would hold Nirn still together.

You really should start using the assets from Skywind for any morrowind refrences, they alredy recreated the entire Vvanderfell, with Dagoth Ur and all the rest, could simply use that instead of the annoying overly imperial looking Raven Rock assets, jut saying.. those Raven Rock immages kinda ..eeh, I can't say ruined it, but it just feelt wrong.

+EV1LxDrP0rKCH0p yea they were. I kind of wish they didn't have to steal the divine power of the Heart, why couldn't Azura just be like "Ok guys, if you want to be gods, then you'll have to promise me that you'll lead my people with honor and not try and twist history and lie" if they really did kill Nerevar then she should have made them repent or something and then make then swear an oath to be god's as retribution, telling them that they won't have find it easy to be a god. I guess Vivec is kind of cocky, if you go and look him up on the morrowind wiki, he has quote saying "defy me and you will know what it is to stand against a god", but almalexia is perhaps the most conceded of the bunch, all throughout her dialog in Tribunal and ESO you can literally pick apart her high and mighty lines when speaking to her.

AkujiMalice There's a moment in Morrowind's main story upon which you're invited to visit Vivec himself in his temple, where he explains everything you need to know and provides you with various scrolls. Vivec is wise enough to provide you with different versions of the same event, even if they speak against him. This is where I'd start, if I were you.

As a rule you could say that the nerevarine wore an exquisite robe to red mountain and find 6 people who would threaten your life because they can prove with evidence it was a common robe. Good to see the direction on this one.

I really love Morrowind and if you think about the story correlates a lot with the Bible. Nerevarine = Nazarene Morrowind/Vvardenfell = Judea/Palestine Tribunal could be pseudo for the Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit The Tribunal Temple = The Jewish Pharisees, both were theopolitical bodies. The Pharisees taught the law of Moses while the Tribunal taught Almsivi and the like The Nerevarine Prophecy = Jesus' Prophecy. In Genesis God told the serpent that he would send a messiah to mend what temptation had wrought on the world Jesus and the Nerevarine would both be rejected by their respective theopolitical powers as blasphemers The Chimeri exodus to Morrowind = The Jewish exodus from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land Indoril Nerevar could be somewhat akin to King David, a great warrior king Ashlander Tribes could be the 12 tribes of Isreal (Samaritans/Urshilaku) The Imperial Legions are easily the Roman Legions that occupied Judea during the time of the Christ prophecy Vivec could be pseudo of Nicodemus, a pharisee that liked Jesus and lowkey thought he was the prophecised messiah Dagoth Ur could be the devil while Azura takes on the role God What do you guys think?
@AngelCakes1997

Except that Each member of the Tribunal were physically present for their worship. Almalexia actively talked to her followers and Sotha Sil even researched magic with every powerful magic guild in the world. History is whoever tells it. There are diverging accounts of historical events including in Elder Scrolls history. It is left up to the player on what they believe happened in the past. We don't know who killed Lord Nerevar or exactly what happened when Mehrunes Dagon destroyed Mournhold. Just because you read it in a book does not mean that it was true. There are many instances of propaganda in this series so you will need to be careful in where you get your information. Ultimately it is up to you to decide what happened. The only facts you get is what you did when playing the games.

Small inaccuracy near the end, Dagoth wasn't his name, but his house title similar to how Telvanni is a house, but a group of Dunmer who are part of the Telvanni Clan also have the name as they are part of the oroginal clan that later became the house. Also the tribunal was well aware why their power was decreasing as they madr yearly pilgrimages to the Heart if Lorkhan to renew their divine power, but one day they were Ambushed by Dagoth Ur, and had to flee before they could reach the Heart Chamber, and renew their power.
