Disclaimer: Lore is subject to rumor found in the game universe.
To this day, the Dwemer, or "Deep-Elves", are the most technologically sophisticated race of mortals to ever grace Tamriel. Their ingenious inventions and deep understanding of the world around them, made the other races of Men and Mer look like primitive apes in comparison. At the height of their evolution the Dwemer occupied laboratories and strongholds stretching the continent, from High Rock to Hammerfell, from Skyrim to their home in Morrowind. Dwemer were one of the most wide-spread races in Tamriel, yet they were hard to come by. Theirs was empire that did not need Ruby Thrones or White Gold Towers. Instead, they toiled away in the bowels of Nirn, researching, crafting, and defining themselves by their works, not their gods.
~ LORE MASTERS ~
I'm not perfect, and I promise you now, with a series as ambitious as this, I will slip up. I'm counting on the lore masters out there to serve as a last line of defense in my fact checking. If you find a mistake, feel free to leave a correction in the comment section below, and make sure to include a source, or it will be ignored. NOTICE I SAID MISTAKE, not if I left something out, because I will come back to it later. Any corrections I'll be forced to make will appear as video annotations, but if I do my job right this will be a rare occurrence. Oh, and sorry in advance for butchering the punctuation of any names!
ENJOY!!!

I'm actually hoping that on some level the Dwemer don't ever return. I like the feel their ruins give off, the feel of a place abandoned by time. A superiour culture which vanished without a reason, much like several real world cultures.

They kinda did. Every time Numidium is activated, that is the Dwemer returning because Numidium is the Dwemer race reformed into a brass god. That thing just points at you and maths you out of existence. When Tiber Septim conquered the Altmer, the Numidium didn't crush armies of elves. It rewrote history so all those elves were dead before the fighting started.

The Dwemer were called "Dwarves", because when the local Giants called them "Dwarves", because they were extremely small to them and they were the first normal sized, humanoid race they coexisted with.
@Yenrx

I have a hypothesis as to what happened to the Dwarves. Ok so we know why Alduin vanished, it was because he was locked away in time (basically) from an elder scroll. Well what if that's what happened to the Dwemer also? What if they unlocked the power of the heart of lorkin and unleashed a rift that locked all of their kind away in time? If that is the case, then they are destined to appear sometime in the future as nothing can just sit in the time steam, it has to pop out sometime right?

I have my own theory, but I know because it's my theory in a sea of other theories is why it's best never getting a straight answer in any way. The answer is in the 36 Lessons of Vivec. If you read all of the books and read between the lines, it tells how Vivec ended up coming out of the game and killing the player, and accidentally deleting the files that contained the Dwemer as well as manipulating the game file to make him a god. All of this is through his point of view and language, so it is like he is telling the player what a computer is from a medieval language.

Ali Emre Kepenek Yeah I just found this out myself, I was shocked at first then I read through the books and its there, I have a feeling that the story actually parallels something that happened at Bethesda while working on Arena or Daggerfall. They intentionally made Vivec's character to be like Gman of half-life, essentially putting themselves in the game teaching the player how to, essentially, speedrun the game if they wanted.

The term Mer refers to Elf; Dunmer, Altmer, Bosmer, even the deformed elves Orsimer and Falmer. Dwemer were elves. Man (Nord and such) name them Dwarf out of human arrogance. Or maybe they were unable to pronounce Dwemer. Either way, the Deep Elves are an elven race.

I wonder if originally they were not agnostic and followed Jyggalag daedra prince of logic until he was cursed by the other daedric princes into Sheogorath. When he vanished perhaps they just realized they didn't need anyone to worship and could invent well enough on their own. Maybe there will be a story in later games showing the rise of Jyggalag and a return of the Dwemer.

My theory is that the Dwemer caused a Dragon break (Look up Dragon Break on Tes wiki If you don't know.) that did indeed allow them to travel forward In time. The same thing happened to Alduin, which caused a small dragon break on the throat of the world, and Arniel Gane, which could possibly be an extremely small dragon break. But hey, it's just a theory, a game theory.

A worthy theory, but I disagree. To understand what happened to the Dwemer, one need only look to Sotha Sil. He was the one who continued investigating the secrets of Lorkhan's heart, and continuing the work that the Dwemer had left off. I find it mist probable that the Dwemer transcended to another realm; akin to those of the Daedra, or Mankar Camoran. That was their desire. When the Tribunal used Lorkhan's heart in the same fashion as Kagrenak, their desire of omnipotence was realised, without vanishing.

Asura Kishin Their goal was to create a new plane, similar to aetherius or oblivion, but a whole new realm. Their interest in aetherius and the material they dubbed "aetherium" is also interesting. All of their focus on Lorkhan's heart also makes it more suspect, as Lorkhan was supposedly responsible for the initial breaking up of the universe. Perhaps they intended to utilize the power of Lorkhan to create a newer plane of existence and succeeded. Personally I think their story ended badly, as the dwemer were very cruel and arrogant, they might have been accidentally transported to Oblivion, the very place where the Daedra that hate them reside. Alternatively they did succeed into creating a new plane of existence, and they now have no effect on nirn.

It's actually all there in bits and pieces if you look hard enough. The Dwemer wanted to achieve divinity. True divinity, not the kind known by Aedra or even Anu and Padomay. They wanted to go beyond that and they thought they knew the way. They failed because Kagrenac screwed up at the last minute. Rather that becoming true gods of another realm, they became Numidium, dead but alive at the same time. Godlike in the sense the rules you impose are actual laws of nature. And Numidium's law is 'NO'. Nothing exists. And so it dedicates itself to rending everything into non existence. Which is why Talos was totally bonkers for activating it.

The more I read, the more it seems as though the creators are implying that the Dwemer have managed to zero-sum themselves into non-existence. Ordinarily, if a person realises their state of existence in TES, they run a huge risk of self-deletion. Of the entire Dwemer race as a whole, only a very select few were probably capable of fully comprehending the boundaries they were about to break (though whether the goal was to achieve CHIM, emulate Aedra or surpass all previous notions of existence, I'm not even remotely qualified to postulate on :P). So the best and brightest tap into the heart in order to do... something. This is a big deal, and all the Dwemer are tuning in via the Calling. What they learn causes them to glimpse into the reality surrounding the Godhead, and they self-terminate. At least, at first glance, this is how it seems. I mean, their culture glorifies logic and simple cut-and-dry mathematical answers, and it turns out they're nothing but dream filler. Shocked by the realisation, the unprepared masses may have zero-summed in an instant. But Kagronak.... Kagronak had to have some basic idea of what he was trying to achieve. The kind of secrets he was trying to unearth. He created tools to manipulate the heart of a deific figure; there was a *specific goal in mind.* I wouldn't like to postulate that he (or any other Dwemer) woke up, or even achieved CHIM. There's no evidence of universal tampering other than their sudden disappearance, after all. But *if* the Dwemer did Zero-Sum, is it possible that some of the Dwemer *didn't*? They all get one shot when facing existence, did they *all* fail? Could some have succeeded in maintaining their individuality? If a lore buff reads this, I know I"m grasping at straws with a *seriously* limited knowledge on the topic, but this is a really interesting twist on a game that I always thought was rather cut-and-dry. I just want to *learn*!!

When? The dwarves dissapeared simultaneously in the middle of the battle of red mountain. Why? Kargenac attempted to create a new god using the heart of lorkhan. How? Keening, Sunder, Wraithguard allow the control of the heart, and are how dagoth ur and the tribunal gained their powers. This leaves only the question of why did kargenac's god fail but the tribunal and dagoth ur succeeded. Presumably it is because of the intent of the users. Kargenac wanted to render the old gods and true gods useless while the tribunal was slowly tempted and corrupted by the presence of the heart. Because the heart is evil, it is safe to assume that it allowed its power to be harvested by the tribunal and bonded with dagoth ur even without the tools, yet refused to serve kargenac.

Considering that 1) The dwemer had a telepathic connection, 2) They were messing with the ascension to godhood in a world that gods exist and can directly influence the events of mundus and 3) The dwemer built a machine that was supposed to be the crowning achievement of their race. I`d wager that the if Dwemer succeeded in making the ultimate hive mind robot and were tricked by the gods into really becoming ONE with the numidium by some sort of divine intervention, thus subduing any trace of individuality they might have had, even their physical bodies.

I hope that in a future Elder Scrolls game, the Dwemer return and, with immensely advanced technologies like magically-powered 'tanks' and mechanically-supported-strength-increasing suits of armour, attempt to take over Tamriel, and you must stop them. Either that, or you can make a deal with them to genetically-alter yourself into a Dwemer using their incredibly advanced machinery and aid them in their conquest... Doubtful After their battle with the Chimer, its likely they were swept away to another plane of existence Whether it was their choice to escape to another realm (they may have had the technology), or they were kicked out by the Tribunal we don't know Some people think the ash like skin of the Dunmer is actually the ashes of the dead Dwemer tattooed deep within their skin. Some people think the Dwemer actually had ties to Mora, which gave them the knowledge and wisdom to create as they did, and escape Nirn and their losing battle against the Chimer. Interesting to speculate.

I don't think Kagrenac was trying to merge the Dwemer with the Numdium. I'm pretty sure he was trying to use the Heart to power it and whatever he did the telepathic link he shared with the others caused what happen to him to happen to others. Whatever that was, we don't know. I'd like to think they ended up on Akavir or another continent. Would be cool to explore there.

They are dead. In the Morrowind expansion where you go to the mainland you explore a Dwemer ruin that has been completely sealed since their race disappeared. You find ash piles everywhere that used to be the city's inhabitants. If this is considered cannon, then they all disintegrated. Maybe they survive in some spiritual form, but they sure as hell aren't mortal and living any more.

That does appear to be the common theory. I personally think that, since each dwemer automaton that you destroy has a soul gem in them, that The dwemer finally mastered immortality by placing their souls into the steam creations, allowing them eternal life. This also explains why the gems are always empty, as killing a machine with a mortal soul would most definitely destroy or release it from it's gem.

Dwemers were not banished yet they started to loose the war for their capital city inside the Red Mountain because of the intervention of Azura,who was affraid of their divine powers. They were able to move to other dimensions even with their bodies ,but Kagrenak to save remaining Dwemers used his tools on the Heart of Lorkhan to move the spirits of all related to Heart into another dimension. Their bodies instantly turned into ashes and covered their enemies creating Dark Elves. Dwemers do live in other dimension. They overcame the gods. But we cant be sure if there are no Dwarves in other lands ,tribes not related to the Lorkhans Heart. From what we know other tribes were very discrete and were hiding their cities ,unlike the tribes from Skyrim or Dwemereth.

Then that is an error in the writing on Bethesdas part because "The Falmer" stands for "The Fallen ones" and they are called that because their race has fallen, they have deteiorated into mutant killers. When they were the regular Snow Elves they did not "fall" yet so therefore the name Falmer would not make sense on them. Also there are plenty of books that even says "the snow elves became the falmer."
@bostontowny4life744
@bostontowny4life744 9 жыл бұрын
And Gelebor does not want to be called a Falmer because of the negative canotation it brings with it. This was also taken right from the Elder Scrolls wikia page for the Falmer; "The Falmer are the degenerate offspring of an endangered species of elves, Snow Elves, who dwell in the ancient Dwemer ruins hewn from Skyrim's expansive subterranean caverns. Although blind, their senses of hearing, smell, and touch are attuned far beyond those of most other races."

Ok, haven't finished watching this video, and I think the series is excellent, but I've got to clarify one point: The dwemer NEVER built armors for themselves. They perfected metalworks but the suit of armors we see were not built by them, but by blacksmiths across Tamriel who have acquired the dwemer metal and reforging it into pieces of armor.
@DevilSlayr
@DevilSlayr 10 жыл бұрын
actually the dwemer did have armor, but it was only used for wars and when the few times the dwemer had to go aboveground... if it was made by the blacksmiths why is there only one set of dwemer armor? wouldnt there be hundreds of different armor styles if it was made by different blacksmiths?
@R.DeMora
@R.DeMora 10 жыл бұрын
Daniel Stevenson Hmm. Well I'm pretty sured I read that info somewhere in-game, but since that shit is huge I really can't quote my source. I'm sure I read on some of the in-game text that Dwemer did not designed that particular set of armor. Why are there not hundreds of different styles? Come on, it's a game, bro :/ I think the developers would have had tons of time consumed if they would've had to come up with several hundred styles for one set of armor. And if they would've done it for one, probably they would've had to do it with all of them. Remember they have to meet deadlines and such. Though maybe we'll get some sweet armor style variation for TES Online, since it's been 5 years in development. My expectations are high! :D

R. DeMora Just a quick thought, but maybe they had the same sort of armor that was similar in detail, but very customizable. Also, If the Dwemer never made armor for themselves, why are there pieces of armor ready for usage scattered across Dwemer ruins in chests? qwq Yeah, I' really hyped about what I might see from the Dwemer in TES online. Ano Namus I dunno If i believe that...it seems a bit dodgy. It would make a lot more sense for there to be scraps of discarded and/or just unused armor in general laying around. It *is* a ruin after all. You can even find these helmets, boots, etc in random chests that are 1) seemingly too small to fit Centurion parts, and 2) They are found often in areas where there was no industrialization, like living quarters and such. You cant even *find* Dwemer armor on Centurions and spheres and spider workers; I'm pretty sure they only give you bits of scrap metal. :P

It would be so COOL 2 see Falmer B4 they got blinded and eventually devolved into Gollum-like creatures. The artwork used in the vid when speaking about them was gorgeous. They appear tall and pale and proud, though troubled. It would be so awesome if there was a single player game set in the times of the Chimer/Dwemer conflict and around the time of the Falmer/Nord (eventually called that) conflict, too. Bring the lore to life Bethesda and/or ZeniMax! The War of the Crag! Kagrenac & Numidium! And all the races even B4 all that. like the Ayleids & Lilmothiit! Gosh, they could keep churning out single player games 4 this franchise for YEARS! YAY!

How could you not mention the war for the Red Mountain? Reason they dissapeared is that during the war with chimeras (Dwarces were united with Nords from what I recall) when they started to loose ,Kagrenak used his tools on the heart ,probably torescue remining Dwemers and to relocate them to other dimension ,cause they truly overcame the Aedras. They loose because Azura helped Chimeras for she was affraid and jaleous of the powers Dwemers achieved. Their bodies turned instantly into ashes and those covered the bodies of chimeras who became from now on dark elves. It became the symbol of their shame. The fact that Dwemers are not dead is proved by their appearance in their ruins and that they can be killed like other magical beings from other dimensions. You cant kill a ghost ,it has to be some kind of being. But we also know that there in one Dwemer that was out of the Nirn during war and he survived ,so we don't know if there is more of them ,if all Dwemers on whole Tamriel moved to other dimension. Not all of them were related to the Lorhans Heart so we may find living Dwarves in second most important land for Dwemers ,Hammerfell. Or in other regions. I cant believe you haven't mentioned the most important part! Shame!

isn't that the same thing the imperials did? (they used the numidium and a dragon) it wouldn't be a problem to me if the dwemer made an empire of their own.

Alan Munilla The dwemer did have an empire (kind of). It was an empire made up of city-states, but it broke apart as all empires do.

No, you like "the idea" of the Dwemer. The Dwemer are my favorite part of the Elder Scrolls, but I know that I would never want to meet them. There's a reason they weren't recorded as individuals, because they were basically a "hive mind", kinda like the Strangers from the movie _Dark City_ . They work like a corporate machine, they didn't sway under petty mortal emotions, especially in their pursuit to becoming divine.

Thanks so much for these videos! I love The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games, but sometimes, it's very hard to keep the lore straight. So, I greatly appreciate both video series, and am excited for any future ones. You have a new subscriber in me now!

You can't really compare 2003 year to nowadays when it comes to sales. Nowadays it's much easier to sell. Also, it will be easy after the success of Skyrim. So they can do a game aroud dwemer. It will be TES, i have hard time believing that TES game will bomb (unless its a MMO).

1) This series is seriously awesome. 2) In the previous video (Ch.6) it was suggested that The Tribunal used The Heart of Lorkhan to take out the Dwemer, but in this video it says their extinction was brought upon themselves during Kagrenac's attempted "ascension". I understand possible varying accounts or whatever, but was just curious whether or not there was more detail on this.
