I bought a pair of Johnston and Murphy penny loafers that I really couldn't afford when I was in grad school, back when they were still made in the US. I kept them well-shined and had them resoled and refurbished by J&M twice, and they lasted me more than 20 years, which is saying something, since I wore them virtually every day for much of that time Finally something happened that couldn't be fixed and I had to let them go. It was a formative experience to me to buy a good entry-level pair of shoes and take care of them. I recently took my 20-something son down to my alterations tailor and passed on two if my jackets and a wool overcoat that had belonged to my father. The tailor marvelled at how good their condition was in spite of regular wear for decades. Special moments.

Wow! two of my favorite shoeshine men in one video! My mother once told me that you could always tell what kind of man one was by his shoes. They didn't have to be expensive, but they had to be clean and shined. I come from the era when men took pride in what they wore and what their shoes looked like. I was a shoe shine boy in down town San Jose, CA age 10. I got so good I had my own clientele. I had appointments for shining bus drivers shoes on their break and was paid well for a kid. I spent many hours, days, months watching a very friendly, animated, good spirited African American shine shoes in front of a Barber shop. I watched and asked many questions. I even developed his shoe shine rag and brush "rhythm". (unique) I started my own little shoe shine business and spent the weekends walking the streets of San Jose, CA with my head down looking at men's shoes. That was the 70's and men still dressed well and wore leather bottom shoes with "taps" (heel savers) on them. I made lots of money for a 10 year old. Had lunch wherever I wanted, went to the movie theater, bought me the leather boots I had eyed for years in the store window and bought my mother gifts (mostly appliances and more). To this day I still wear leather bottom shoes with taps (heel savers) and spit shine them until I can see my face. I owe it all to that friendly, animated shoeshine man with the stand in front of the Barber shop. I admire and take my hat off to any and all men who take the time to shine their shoes and make an effort to dress well, because any budget can with some creativity. Thank you for making this video Kirby. I admire and respect both of you, Jason and your individual techniques. Stay Classy. Angel from The Bay (Area) Caliboy

This is great. Question for Kirby: I notice you’re using the neutral pate de luxe. Is there any advantage to using a color-specific pate de luxe over the neutral mirror gloss? Or is the color irrelevant to the “melting” process? In the latter case, I’ll save my colored pate de luxes and just use the neutral for glacaging. Thanks!

Hello Kirby. So I live in Montreal, Canada where the winter lasts for 5-6 months. Obviously, I cant wear the dress shoes in the winter so my question is is it enough just to store the shoes in the closet/box or should I apply cream to it (once a month). Thank you

Jason, could you please speak louder... Overall I enjoyed this collaboration the most, compared with others. Both of you pointed out two important things. First to invest in quality shoes and then make an effort to take care of yourself. That includes how you dress and shoe care. To me, the way I look at a person is by their shoes. That tiny small detail truly makes a huge difference.

Hi Kirby I'm really interested about the shoe shine shammy that you are using. Can you tell me what material is it made of and do you cut them to smaller pieces. And what is the major difference in terms of shine from using a shammy, ordinary cloth and by hand. Thanks.

Hey Kirby, Has the quality of Allen Edmonds’s gone down? I recently purchased a pair of Fifth Avenues and the leather just doesn’t seem to be on par with my older AE shoes. I for sure noticed the difference in the quality of shoe laces. These new ones are just poor quality, much thicker than my others. Small things like that just bother me when it comes to my shoes. Thanks

I've often wondered how to shine combination leather shoes, where the upper is stitched equal parts suede and full grain calf. I've been reticent to buy a pair of shoes like that for fear of ruining the suede by getting cream polish or wax on the suede. Any chance of a video on that?
