Arai or Shoei is all I have ever worn. Money well spent when I rode thumpers in the Australian bush. Cracked my noggin more than once and my old Arai saved my bacon numerous times. On the asphalt I chose a Shoei GT-Air and I can’t fault it. In 40C it has excellent air flow for cooling and the liner is as plush as it gets. Not inexpensive by any means but I trust hand made Japanese gear over all others. Still to be convinced by less expensive lids. A case of brand loyalty me thinks.

Hey Mate! I absolutely love mine. In fact my avatar is the Qwest! Excellent fit, extremely comfortable, very aerodynamic, and the biggest thing of all is I feel safe wearing it. I just wish the headliner was swappable. but hey, I can live with that. You can't beat the value this thing delivers. It looks pretty good, too! The graphics are beautifully applied. A winner in every respect. Cheers!

Dear Mr Flyer, the EPS lining is actually bonded to the inside of the shell and isn't detachable. It's literally just white polystyrene packaging material. The detachable bit is the comfort liner but it's far more important than just comfort. Good vid as always.

Dougie I have an rf1200 and the schuberth S2. I LOVE the S2 for touring. It's phenomenal. Rf1200 for sport riding. My shoei is only quiet with zero wind protection. i.e. Clean air. As soon as I have a windscreen in front of me it gets loud and reacts terribly to buffeting. The S2 has no issues either way. I ended up mistakenly getting my S2 in a size too big. (XL) Definitely requires some break-in. I can imagine if I had a Large (smaller shell) it'd be even better.

Funnily enough only received my new Shoei Neotec 2 a couple of days ago. My first Shoei and I'm really impressed, quieter than my Schuberth C3 Pro, which is meant to be one of the quietest. I suffer with tinnitus so quietness a big issue for me. Neither helmet would suit you I don't think - both flip-ups and both have ratchet fasteners which I think are far better. Cheers, Jon.

I have 2 Qwests. Neither will keep the right side, lower foam locked into place. Could be the way I take on and off the lid, but I've owned several Shoeis over the years (started with the RF700 ~1995) and that was never an issue on any of the others. The other issue I have with them is wind noise, specifically whistling. They have a little adjustment screw and I've diddled with it. Made it better, but now I have to punch myself in the face to get it to close all the way. A lot of wind still makes its way thru the side, but at least it's at lower frequency. Comfort wise they are gems. Mine gets a lot of work behind a motorcycle windscreen with the helmet's windscreen flipped up. For that they're ideal. On my nekkid bike, I far prefer my Arai RX-Q. Less noise, no whistling, way better ventilation. The one area that the Qwest has it beat is the ease in getting it on and off my head. Funny thing is, I've owned an Arai full face in the past and aside from comfort, never thought that much of it. The plastic bits broke off easily, the windscreens wouldn't stay open behind a fairing (downforce would close it), and the screen attachment mechanism was insanely complex. I had the luxury of trying to figure it out in a monsoon in the Monongahela forest one time when my wife's came apart. It did do a dandy job of protecting my noggin bouncing off of a curb though. My wife wants nothing but Arai and when I got her the last one, it seemed pretty good so I took a shot on one myself and have been delighted with the improvements they've made since my last one. Arai just upgraded the line again and the prices have near doubled. Hope mine lasts a good while.

Stopped to watch this as a bit of nostalgia. I had a shoei qwest for about 3 years and sadly had to bin it after an accident that took a chunk out of it. Never tested a helmet for impact before but it stood up and did it's job very well indeed. A damned fine helmet. On the plus side, the insurance payout covered a new gt-air.

Big shout out to the wider audience and the flyer. I have a quest and had it about seven years. Very little use as I also had an Arai which I used in the main until I dropped it. Bit of a fan of Shoei crash helmets. Currently using a flip front Neotec 1. At the NEC motorcycle live show I spoke to the Shoei representative and he told me of the imminent release of the Neotec 2. It looks like a restyled version of the previous iteration and is a bit on the pricey side, but as my old man used to say “if you have a £10 head then by a £10 helmet”. Best features on the Neotec, without doubt the flip down sun visor and the recessed padding which allows for use spectacle wearers to put on their glasses with the minimum of fuss. I also dispensed with the chin breath guard ‘shroud’ thing, just could not get on with it. One final thing to mention is the quality of the paint finish on Shoei helmets in general, always seems a shame to wear them! Any news on when you will road test the Kawasaki Z900RS?

I'm very happy the Shoei Qwest gets the "TMF Stamp of Approval" ... They are on clearance here in the US and I was able to pick one up for $269(us) at a local shop(a helmet is something I need to try on, so I didn't buy on-line) Anyway, I wanted a brain bucket that was much more quiet, fit better and had more ventilation than my current Bell Qualifier, the Qwest seemed to tick all those boxes. Its winter here in New England, my ride is in storage so I haven't been able to try the Shoei out for real yet but around the house for some break-in time, it feels great. I just recently got it setup with my Sena SMH10 and Prism Tube.....good to go as soon as the riding season starts :)

Another great review. Have you checked out the new Shoei Neotec. Looks good. One thing I must say : I don't buy this "have to replace helmet every 5 years" Depends entirely on the helmet construction and how often you wear it. I'm sure they do not come with a timing device.

It must be an issue with my head shape and everything I heard about this helmet was good reports, I did notice where the cheek piece foam meets the top section of foam there is quite a gap for the wind to pass down straight the your ears, you did say that your's was one of the better helmets for wearing glasses so this would explain that. "TheMissendenFlyer" is missenden in relation to say great missenden or little missenden or does it have no correspondence?
@TheMissendenFlyer6 жыл бұрын
Great Missenden, and "flyer" is reference to the fact I'm a pilot - OK?

Way not a Flip-up helmet with a clear visor and build-in sunvisor. Easy to put on, even with your glasses on. Work at day and night. Very versatile.

I have one of those as well (an LS2) - Haven't had it long so need some more time with it....issue I have is it's hard to mount a camera on it for vlogging purposes!

hmm, the only reason to buy a particular helmet for me - is that it is quiet! and i dont like double d fasteners - a waste of time.

So I understand - still some final stock bargains to be had though it seems, must grab myself one!!
@anton57496 жыл бұрын
Paid £ 250 for mine a year ago. Incidentally, I do the same as you - I don’t use the chin curtain and leave the vents open all the time but my glasses still mist. I normally leave the little clip on the side in the forward position so that the visor doesn’t full close. The only problem then is the cold and noise. May be I need to try a different style of glasses. Nothing is perfect!

You using a pinlock?
@anton57496 жыл бұрын
Yes I am using a Pinlock. I have just upgraded the pins to the 3 part type. Got a better seal now. Visor doesn’t mist it’s my glasses. Do you know if it safe to coat the lenses with anti fog spray?

Definitely going to be looking at Shoei's when I replace my current AGV helmet. Heard nothing but good things about the Shoei's. My AGV K3-SV is ok as a first helmet, but the wind noise is horrible in it!
@TheMissendenFlyer6 жыл бұрын
I have an AGV too - looks great but is uncomfortable and noisy as you say....I won't be going there again!
@TheKarl14646 жыл бұрын
only issue with this vid is it is a review of an out of date helmet as you admit, and surely the new version has since been improved/upgraded, which is more relevant, plus you don't mention if the current version is still rated so highly by the government as your's was? Sorry, but reviews of ageing kit hold little value if I was looking to purchase a 2018 model.

Karl Hughes These are excellent helmets still highly regarded today. You can still find a limited supply new on the market at a good price.

I've had this film "in the can" for over a year and was desperate to get it published - I had no idea the Qwest was being discontinued, you can still get it at bargain prices so I think it's very opportune timing for those on a budget that want an excellent lid!

If the dark visor is marked Not for Road Use you could be uninsured if someone, a child, ran out in front of you and you knocked them down. Funny they get round this with the small dark drop down visor. I use a light tint for Day time use.

You clearly love the helmet and for all the reasons you mentioned. No downsides? Brace yourself: - No sunshade, so you have buy an additional dark visor (cost?) and cart around the clear one. - Top vent, I've got a Shoei GT Air, same top vent design. With some bikes the air from the screen aims straight at this yawning vent and it's loud. - Double D ring, not a nip to the shops design. It's a faff and as it's not a flip front, there are days when you're constantly taking the thing on and off. - can you get speakers in it? If not, for a lot of people it's not a touring helmet. I don't use my Shoei any more, I use an Arai Quantum ST PRO a superior helmet because: - No noisy top vent. - Doesn't fog as easily due to having a flip down chin spoiler, same design as the old Arai Quantum F. - Has a peak that's not a peak. On Adv helmets, a frontal impact is not a glancing blow, as the helmet is too flat faced. Add to that a peak and well, not good. The sun shade on my shoei GT Air has an internal flip down visor, meaning the shell is bigger and not as strong. The Arai however has a fold down dark tint strip that you can adjust to make a dark tint visor, or leave up to make a peak. It works flawlessly. - All the Arai vents are so well designed, as is the visor and cheek pads and well everything about it shows the constant ittteration of an already brilliant design. - It's also one of the safest helmets you can put on your head. Try one on before buying another Shoei. They've sold countless Arai Quantums over the years, there's a reason. They're efin brilliant.

I am thinking to buy this kind of helmet but very useless without sunglasses (and dangerous if can not see the road ),otherwise helmet with sunglasses can not be safe as without.Dosent matter if still 5 stars,it is like the car ncap test, the cars makers develop for the test becouse they know where are the check point but in the real life if the accident happen next to 20 cm where is the crash test point 5 starts car can get 1 star.....so Iooks like good helmet but need seperatelly sun glasses...I thin only Arai (qv pro) solved this problem becouse the suglasses is outside,so still maximum safe.

Worst helmet i have ever owned. Noisy visor. Noisy visor. Yes I say it twice. HOT as heck. Neck pads keep coming pulled out at back as i slide the helmet off. No removable top liner to fit your communication wiring. Buy an rf1200 or similar.
