Hey Guys
My name is Alex Ridgeway, I am a Farrier in Newmarket, England and I'm also the Global Farriery Project Coordinator for the international animal welfare charity Brooke.
I created this channel to share some of my experiences working with horses whether that's horses I care for or the support of other farriers around the globe. I aim to create entertaining videos as part of my farrier vlog, but I will let you be the judge of that!
I am also producing educational videos about horse's Anatomy, How to’s, and I hope to produce videos all about different pathologies and how to better care for your horse.

World Horse Welfare have done simular projects like this however they included on some veterinarian education and how to make better saddles/harnesses. I really adore both of these projects as they help. And rather than just giving money and equipment they cant maintain/replace you work with what they have while giving information. Well done :D

Thank you for what you are doing. It is not an easy task trying to teach people to unlearn something they used to doing. I have a suggestion regarding the nails: wouldn't it be possible to reshape the wood nails (by filing down one side or knocking it on an anvil) so that it resembles modern horse shoe nails? Also can't they drill or punch holes in "shoes" before putting them on? your thoughts... Lots of love, from South Africa

I think that using rubber from tires is a good concept, and actually would do better at supporting the weight of the horse than traditional iron horse shoes, but it is difficult to realize they had no concept of how much pain they were causing the animals by nailing into the sensitive parts of the foot, and not realizing what other farriers use for nails, and not form fitting the rubber properly. I like using rubber from tires, but in many ways they are putting the cart before the horse, literally!!! I wish they were not struggling so much, and then they could respect other sentient beings as they do each other. It is sad that there is such abuse to God's creatures.

I wonder whether hipposandals would be a better solution than a nailed shoe. They were the leather forerunners of a metal shoe and were attached without nails. I can imagine something similar could be made of car tires.

What they REALLY need is some good "people" harnesses. A "team" of several people should be hauling the sugar.

The big problem is: they dont use swingle tree to pull the cart. Donkeys , mules and horses are not oxes. Horse loose lot of power to pull like that. Every cart shoul be equiped with a swingle tree where the traction take place. There in Etiopia, like the backcountry in Brazil, the steps for solving the problem are: 1 - nutricion 2 - DIY inexpensive vet care ( plants, etnoveterinary etc.) 3 - hoof care and/or shoeing 4 - proper harness and harnessing and the use of swingle tree to pull carts, loads, to plow, etc 5 - improvement of carts. Made out of cars parts are too heavy to be pulled by a donkey or even a horse 6 - proper load to be carried or pulled. Donkeys, mules and horses can pull twice their wheight. The donkeys in the video looks like to be 200/250 kg. and can pull 500 kg includig the wheigt of the cart. What they are doing, loading a cart with 1.600 kg plus the wheith of the cart and without a swingle tree, is simply loosing time and the little money they have. Donkeys are not elefants and they still doing this, and with great effort, only because the ground is flat. Sorry for my very rusty english.

If they had steel shoes and proper nails donated to them would they be stolen and resold? Horses look in rough shape but sad reality is I live in western Canada and there are animal hoarders that have horses that look that rough but at least these ones work everyday and the people are poor it doesn't make it ok , but you feel for these people trying to feed their families. My cattle Vet has just came back from a month in Kenya where she helped teach the people how to better care for their cattle and start them on a vaccination program.

Yes there is always that risk but even if they did use them, they are relying on that donation to continue and for how long? Ideally we teach them and help them to either make or source locally creating sustainability.

They can barely pull those loads 😢 and they’re so skinny! poor things! Thank you for trying to at least help those donkeys and horses a bit. They deserve better care and not be over loaded in weight that weighs way more than they do. Ugh I know things are different in every part of the world but, this breaks my heart 😔

Yes but what happens when the supply stops? They could possibly import stock (shoes and nails) but unfortunately just the nails alone are 4x what they currently pay for the carpentry / wood nails

Is there any forge work being taught along with getting supplies there to teach them properly? I would enjoy living there and being a part of the transformation of these animals by also helping the mission of teaching them to use conventional trimming and shoeing methods. BWFA-JIICF

This was my idea seven years ago one of my apocalypse prepping ideas so gas prices was a main inspiration...smaller stronger breed would be ideal.actually I'd prefer something agile like a large silver back gorilla that climb ambush be taught how to do things or a tiger just armour the gorilla up and put a harness seat or something on its back the possibilities are truly amusing...I'd teach him to throw grenades teach him sapper skills..and call him Bronson 🤣

Yes and we advise those that can to do so... Mainly the donkey population. Unfortunately most of the horse's especially the gharry horse (taxi) all tend to be shod

@@AlexRidgewayFarrier on the other video I made a suggestion that I am hoping you could pass on. I am adding it here so you might see it. In china there were farriers with primitive tools which included a small a-frame bench with a piece of rubber tire on the top and the horses foot rested on the bench as the farrier trimmed and nailed on shoes. It would be better for horse and farrier to have the foot braced on a solid surface versus having someone hold the foot.

Poor animals look near death and completely broken. Horrible to say but they would be better off dead. Look at the bruises the blood in the scarring from the loads they have been pulling. Poor sweetheart's without hope😓❤️

12 bags @ 50 kg ea = 600 kg; add another 200 kg for the weight of the cart - and I'll bet a pewter penny to a gold sovereign that the tyres are not inflated hard to make it run easier - and it's poor bloody overworked underfed badly shod equines.

Why don't they have 2 donkeys hooked up to the carts so that their carts could be pulled easier than just having 1 donkey hooked up to the carts! But don't add no more weight to the carts than they have on the carts than they already have on it for 1 donkey!
