5:10 a sharp and COARSE sander + not too much pressure on the weel will completely erase the burning of the leather surface. the burning will create a very rough edge that is more sensitive to dirt and water the two of which will weaken the leather and the bond a bit quicker... thanks for this series! regarding you are an amateur shoemaker i am especially impressed by your lasting skills! also since its a technique thats rarely used in bagmaking...

-Thanks, for all of this. I’m slowly putting together bits and pieces for my first pair, which will be something vaguely related to a North American moccasin, or boat shoe or something like that. Having wide feet sucks. -I’m impressed that you managed to wrangle the end of this project with a newborn at home. Huge congrats, and wow. -Congrats on just wrapping up a solid project. Speaking only for myself, I found the little glitches and humorous asides to be hugely helpful, and your ability to just keep rolling with them added to the series more than they took away. Mistakes happen, nobody’s perfect, and that’s important to see. Whenever I write or build things, I only see the little mistakes, so I can’t legitimately tell someone else not to worry about the little stuff... but don’t worry about the little stuff. -ye gads. Those socks!

Thanks for you encouraging words. I'm glad you appreciated the unpolished parts of the videos. I find it hard when it seems like everyone else is doing an amazing job and never mucking it up, so I think it's important to show that you don't have to be perfect to do a good job
@jwatriss3 жыл бұрын
I went to a high-end woodworking school, where the perfection drum was constantly beating. It’s inspiring to see a master at work, who doesn’t make mistakes that you’d notice, but it’s hard as a beginner to not know anything about working with the results you have. There’s a quote from (I think) William Morris, in Stones of Venice, that basically says that the soul of a craftsman is all about for!giveness, and forgiving himself. Only someone who’s willing to reach a little beyond their current grasp will ever grow. Apparent perfection comes eventually if your method of work is the only thing you know, and it’s all you’ve ever done for your career. But it won’t stretch your boundaries or help you become more than you are. So, rock on for working through learning curves, and encouraging others to do likewise.

Thanks for the kind comments. I'll be honest, I didn't do a great job on this pair of shoes and they didn't last very long. I think the leather was a bit oily and the glue didn't grab like it should have. It didn't help that I was focused on trying to get clear camera shots instead of the job at hand. Every other pair I've made looks as good as when I finished them.

Thank you for this it was fun watching and very informative, I notice you didn't use the stiffener for the front and the back of the shoe. Why so?
@AndrewReesonLeather3 жыл бұрын
Just for simplicity. The leather was pretty thick so it holds its shape fairly well. The back of the shoe has two layers of it, so the heel is already well reinforced.

@AndrewReesonLeather2 жыл бұрын
The lasts I used were second hand so I had to guess the heel height. I laid the last on a flat surface and lifted the heel until it looked right. This pair was easy to figure out because the heel is flat at the correct height. If they were made for a tall heel then it would be a lot harder to figure out
