Toronaga bowing to Buntaro as a sign of respect for his courage is priceless. I love that scene, also because Mriko shows some emotions despite her bad relationship with him.

Hatamoto was a very respected position. Essentially meant bannerman and had a respectable yearly wage as well as granting the right to an audience directly with a Daimyo (Lord) which was above what a typical member of the Samurai class could expect. Anyone being granted such a title was someone who commanded noticable respect. To be given to a foreigner was even doubly so. (William Adams the man John Blackthorne is based on was also made Hatamoto by the real world Toranaga Ieyasu Tokugawa.)

Buntaro's last stand is one of my favorite moments in this series. We see him as a jealous asshole the whole episode. But, he is still an honorable man. The writing is next level. His battle cry at the end gives me chills every time.

The real Buntaro (Toda Hirokatsu..."Buntaro" could function as a nickname in real life) actually lived longer than any of the other principals, and was famed as a warrior. I would expect to see him at least in season 2.

It never ceases to amaze me that they keep referring to the anjin as "The barbarian" after they boiled a man to death....
@braxtonmims4223
@braxtonmims4223 Ай бұрын
when you say "they," you are referring exclusively to Yabushige. Boiling people alive was not customary among the Japanese, strictly Yabushige's fictional character. So I don't think this is a fair argument
@user-zx9jq4pv1w
@user-zx9jq4pv1w Ай бұрын
@@braxtonmims4223 Boiling alive was the punishment for murder by poisoning in Tudor England. The series does create misconceptions of both European (specifically English since we have Blackthorne as the primary reference) and Japanese worlds. There were lots of ways to face execution unthinkable today in both cultures. Cosmo has more in common with his Japanese colleagues on set than either do with the world of 1600. Also, the show and book don't take account of class differences. Blackthorne would have more in common with the common Japanese peasantry and workers around than he does with the aristocracy in Japan or in England for various reasons. Most Japanese peasants aren't bathing daily either since they don't have an army of servants to do the work in a world without electricity, indoor plumbing, and running hot water.
@TerraZetzz
@TerraZetzz Ай бұрын
More prejudice back then due to people not being connected and educated about the rest of the world. I'm sure if a Japanese person visited England at the same time period, the locals would also give them a "name." Remember in the first episode, they were both calling each other savages.

Toranaga was not a fisherman, and anyway, as it is historically correct, and pointed out in the book also, Japanese at that time were not really "sailors". They did not have a need for that, as they did not have anyone to trade with (China hated them), and for example when they came to invade Korea, Korean navy whoopped their asses (the famous turtle ships). They sailed only near the shore, and felt uncomfortable when lost its sight - that's why they took Rodrigues as a pilot after all to the Yabu village, as he know how to sail and navigate open waters, and get to the village quickly. Sure Japanese were also pirates (waku is the term if I am not mistaken), but again, you have a ship full of nobility, not seamen (crew would not speak), so it is beliveable.

There's also something cultural at the time about not entering the water head-first. So they can swim, but tended to jump in feet-first. Seeing Anjin do something different, Toranaga wanted to learn this new thing to see if he could.
