Hatamoto means “guardian of the banner” which are direct retainers or bannermen to daimyo (lords). They essentially are lesser lords that command military units/lands but pledge loyalty to another lord. The historical figure that Blackthrone is inspired by William Adams; the first English pilot to reach Japan and eventually became hatamoto for Tokugawa

Toronaga is playing 4D chess while everyone else is barely playing checkers, no matter what happens he will find a way to make it an advantage All of the characters are based on historical figures and it reminds me of a Koan that us taught to school children about the great unifiers of Japan Each was asked what they would do with a bird that does not sing Oda Nobunaga (Kuroda) says "kill it" Toyotomi Hideyoshi (The Taiko) says "coax it to sing" Tokugawa Ieyasu (Toronaga) says "wait"

Most weekends I chat with my folks over the phone. Last weekend we were talking about all the different shows we're watching, and I mentioned Shogun to my parents (who are both in their 60s), and that's when my *dad* chimed in and mentioned this series. I was taken aback since, in my 37 years of life, he never once mentioned ANYTHING about Eastern culture, let alone any series. He's a Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, and Seinfeld guy. That weekend, I learned that my dad was a huge Shogun fan back in the day. My mouth was agape for a good 2 minutes.

2:40 A consort is more than just an unmarried woman whom the man she is consort to can mate with. A hatamoto needs a household, and it is the consort's duty, if the hatamoto doesn't have a wife, to run the affairs of the household itself, as well as to support the man she is consort to with his affairs. If Blackthorn decides to build a fleet, for example, it will be her duty to know what's involved in building ships, such as where these can be built and what materials and equipment are needed.

The food is Natto, or a fermented soybean. It's stinky like a ripe cheese, kind of gooey. It's pretty much 50/50 on people either really liking it or really hating it. I think it's quite good on a bowl of hot rice with a raw egg yolk on top.
@lemonherb17 ай бұрын
When Nagakado attacked Jozen's men, it was not with the standard canon shots. If you remember just before Jozen showed up, Blackthorne was explaining the "chain shot", which increases the diameter of damage. So imagine segmented canonball attached by a chain blasted out of the canon. That's why the men and horses were shredded. Apparently this type of attack is meant more for ship battles to take out sails, masts and rigging. Considering how damaged the Erasmus was when they drifted into that harbour, it was likely a victim of a chain shot
@thissailorja7 ай бұрын
the halves connected by chain have a tendency to spin in air. The range is a bit less but the damage is greater over a large area and yes, devastation is to the rigging and parts of the mast and sails. It takes out Sailors and Marine Sharpshooters pretty well too.

I am a Japanese who had 16 years education in Japan and 2 year graduate level education in US. What pleasurable for me is that each of the major character has the historical model, but more pleasurable thing is visual; you may have noticed that whenever Toranaga travels with his retainers, they carry three heart-shaped mark (hollyhock leaves) actually used by Tokugawa Ieyasu, historical model oh Toranaga. “Hatamoto “ literary means “under the (same) flag” is upper class Samurai at the time of Sengoku (warring) period just above “ashigaru (no heavy weapon)”. Later in Edo period “gokenin” class was inserted between Hatamoto and Ashigaru.
@tehdipstick7 ай бұрын
The banner symbols are clan/family crests, while the helmet crests are personal to the individual samurai. Yabushige's helmet crest and banner symbol are the same because he's the head of his clan, while Omi, who is Yabushige's nephew, has his own personal crest. It's the same with Toranaga and his son, Nagakado.
@pangkaji7 ай бұрын
7:22 "what does that mean exactly?" Hatamoto means "Flag Man", "Banner Man" or "Guardian of the Banner". You get the idea. Hatamoto is the highest samurai rank serving a feudal lord (Daimyo). The daimyo knows him by name and Hatamoto has an audience right to the daimyo. Hatamoto is expected to die serving his lord. Either die in battle defending his lord's interest or commit Seppuku alongside his lord when he surrenders
@darrenobayashi65287 ай бұрын
The emblems on the flags, helmets, armor and clothes are family crests/clan crests called "mon". Every samurai family would have belonged to a clan, unless they are "ronin" or masterless. So when the ship came ashore you seen Yabushige's clan holding his flags.
@P.Whitestrake7 ай бұрын
Hatamoto is the title for a samurai who serve the high ranking samurai directly. In this case, it's Toranaga. It's different than just an ordinary samurai or a foot soldier.

Anna Sawai is so good at meaningful expressions without speaking. 1 koku is equivalent value of 1 year of rice for 1 person. So at 200 Koku a year he is getting rice value for 200 people. Portugese still fought similar to the Spanish with ship cannon. Bigger heavier guns with shorter range. English built lighter guns that shot further and could be adjusted for accuracy easier. That's part of why the English beat the Spanish Armada aside from the trickery of the burning ships, their guns were hitting the Spanish ships before the Spanish ships could hit theirs.

In the book, a rutter is kept by the pilots. A “pilot” in this era is an old name for what we call a navigator. It was not uncommon for a pilot to also have additional titles such as Pilot Captain. Again, in the book, each pilot kept two rutters: one “official” log and one private log. The private rutter would often be written in code or short hand

All armies in Japan of this era wore on their armors or flags on their back the crest of their lord. Usualy they wore even clothes of the colour of their lords flag/crest. But this wasn't so mandatory. The crest was though. It was practical so they recognised their allies and enemies on the battlefield.

Especially since these are naval cannons, which the chain shot would be larger than the more compact field guns, and would use a much thicker and heavier chain to tear through the wood, ropes and fabric of a ships rigging.

He’s in Yabu’s lands with nothing but a few guards. If Yabu’s decides to grab him and return him to Ishido, it could be a way for Yabu to get back in Ishido’s good graces. Thats whyToronaga leaves on his boat so quickly.

John is not noble. But Queen Elizabeth I. was known for loving her heroes at sea like Sir Franics Drake who John served under as he told in episode 1. You have to be aware that it was just 12 years ago at this point when the English Navy had faught off the invasion of the Spanish Armada in 1588. She surely would have received the one english sailor who brought the first japanese noble woman to London.

If Blackthorn, who was not a samurai at the time, had pointed his gun at the samurai with hostile intent, he would not have gotten away with it. Perhaps that scene was a service to the American audience. The Spanish and Portuguese missionaries operating in Japan were insistent from the beginning that he be executed for being a pirate. Had they done so, he would have been killed on the spot. There were 50,000 guns in Japan at that time, and gun squads were stationed in various parts of the country. If he had threatened the samurai with a gun, he would have been shot dead on the spot.

Uh, no. This series changed pretty much every interaction the women have from the original story, which was much more true to history in that respect. How they treat their women is frequently a big part of Blackthorn's culture shock, such as him being confused and appalled that he's just _given_ a woman and told she's take care of all his sexual needs as well as his house for example. All that's removed here. The revisionism is pretty disgusting, but that's the world we live in now.
