To be given a family heirloom katana was and still is one of the highest honors in Japanese culture as it is a sacred object that represents discipline and integrity for those who carry them. I would be speechless.

@@Bigalinjapan Yes, and if you would have the luck of 1/1000000, then you would be about to marry a Japanese girl with an ancient samurai family history which is still exist, but i bet you know that, and if they would respect you so much, because you are that nice, maybe they would give their family sword as a gift, which is a hand made proper x/hundred years old Katana... What would you say? Katana is more than just a blade. Or it can be more than just a tool for killing.

Point of Interest: Historically speaking, early japanese swords were based on chinese designs, which were similar to Western longswords, in that they had a central spine and were dual edged. Some sources say that the design was changed to make the swords more resilient, and less prone to breaking. I guess because having a single edge allows for a thicker spine and better geometry. A curved design makes them easier to draw quickly. The reason why Japanese blacksmiths had to fold the Japanese steal so much, was the lack of pure iron in japan. The folding process was to eliminate impurities. The byproduct of this was that it gave them their beautiful mirror finish.

The mirror finish is from high carbon (charcoal) content in the iron.

Curved blades are better at cutting since they can have a longer edge compared to a straight blade with the same length from hilt to tip. Space-efficient and easier to draw. For this reason, they were favored by cavalry all over the world. Samurai were originally cavalry as well, and the Katanas are actually shortened remnants from that legacy.

@@KoflerDavid also according to physics there is more forward pressure concentrated in a smaller spot due to the curve shape that less iron is making impact on the receiving surface than in a straight surface.

This is my favorite relationship in this show. Misunderstanding leading to kindness to friendship to near kinship, especially with that final scene with the ashes. Beautifully done.

The pacing is perfect. And the writing is unbelievable. The dialog in the entire series does not contain a single wasted word. It's impressive on how they acheived this.

Horses are strong. She is saying that she has a greater chance of pulling a vegetable from a hungry horse than being a gun toting fighter, ie., she has no idea how to use a gun.

Anna Sawai. I thought she looked familiar during the entire show but I couldn't place her. Later on I saw a clip of Ninja Assassin and realized that's where I'd seen her from. She has a small role in that movie.

gozarimasu comes from gozaru, which means "to be" or "to have". Usually attached like "arigato gozaimasu" which means "i have thanks" or "i am thankful". As far as I know gozirimasuru is actually just gibberish, it's anjin-sama getting the word wrong.
