Shogun: Anjin-San Chooses His First Samurai Warrior Retainers From Lord Yoshi Toranaga

Shogun: Anjin-San (Richard Chamberlain) chooses his first Samurai Warrior Retainers, given to him by Lord Yoshi Toranaga (Toshiro Mifune), along with The Lady Toda Buntaro Mariko (Yoko Shimada). Lord Kashigi Yabu (Frankie Sakai) explains that if any of these Samurai Warriors are unacceptable, he can bring others for him to choose from. Anjin-San accepts all of these Samurai Warriors as his first personal Samurai Warrior Retainers, out of his 200 Samurai Warriors, given to him by the Lord of the Kwanto: Lord Yoshi Toranaga. Urano-San (formerly in the Jesuit Priesthood as Brother Joseph; played by Takeshi Obayashi) is not recommended by Lord Yabu, but Anjin-San accepts Urano-San, who can speak Japanese and English fluently, becomes Anjin-San's First Chief Samurai Warrior of his contingent.
Shogun, The Millions-Of-Copies Sold Novel, was written by James Clavell. The Masterpiece Television Mini Series was Produced by NBC and Paramount Studios, Directed by Jerry London, Screenplay by Eric Bercovici, Director Of Photography Andrew Laszlo, Production Executive Frank Cardea, with Production Designer Joseph Jennings. Shogun starred: Richard Chamberlain (as Pilot-Major John Blackthorne), Toshiro Mifune (as Lord Yoshi Toranaga), Yoko Shimada (The Lady Toda Buntaro Mariko), Frankie Sakai (as Lord Kashigi Yabu), Alan Badel (as Jesuit Priest, The Father Visitor Dell’Aqua), Michael Hordern (as Friar Domingo), Damien Thomas (as Jesuit Priest, Father Martin Alvito), John Rhys-Davies (Portuguese Pilot Vasco Rodrigues), Vladek Sheybal (as Portuguese Captain Ferriera), George Innes (as Ship Hand Vinck), Leon Lissek (as Portuguese Jesuit Father Sebastio), Yuki Meguro (as Samurai Warrior, Kashigi Omi), Hideo Takamatsu (as Lord Toda Buntaro), Hiromi Senno (as Consort Usagi Fujiko), and Nobuo Kaneko (as Lord Ishido Kazunari). Many people were involved in the making of this classic masterpiece. There was an A-List Cast, an A-List Director, an A-List Musical Score from Maurice Jarre, and A-List production quality with amazing sets and intricate costumes, detailed for that time era. Narration by the famous and powerful voice of Orson Welles.

There is a new Shogun coming out on the FX Channel on February 27, 2024. However, we will not be covering the new Shogun TV Series.

Yabu is such a great character. Antagonist, ally, traitor, comic relief. I can't think of another quite like him.

Anyway, he is a friend. In a way he is an enemy. That’s the typical Japanese of the time. They change their allegiances when it fits them

Frankie Sakai was absolutely brilliant in the way he played Yabu. He died far too young at just 67. Memory eternal.

The first series and the book was Blackthorne centric, basically an Englishman adventures in feudal Japan. The new series has been more Japanese centric with the underlining politics of Toranaga verses the regents. A lot more about Mariko.

Unfortunately in doing so they departed significantly from the tone of the original story. The characters in the new series are dramatically different in their demeanor in a way which does not honor the novel and seems a bit of pandering to “modern values.”

@@davidrosenblum2178 Right, such as with almost everybody being called -sama all the time. Egalitarian. I don't know the motivation of changing Fujiko to Fuji. The 'ko' means, in the context of this story, 'lady' or 'samurai woman'.

When the mini series was running I was reading the novel furiously to keep ahead of the plot. Great book and I own the first edition novel AND the first DVD box set.

Awesome scene Blackthorne receives his samurai how cool. Loyal warriors sworn to protect him that’s loyalty. The way they look at him before there blood oath very compelling.

I laugh out loud at this scene. Blackthorne is so tired of all the killings he accepts all the samurai instantly. Mariko: "Then they will be put to death." Blackthorne: (I can't even....) "I'll take them all." 😂

I've seen some clips of the 2024 Shogun and it looks alright, but the 1980 Shogun has such a great cast, especially Frankie Sakai as Yabu. I also really like John Rhies-Davies as Rodrigues and Damien Thomas as Father Alvito.

Hai, OnlineRadioSchool-San! I do not see it either. There was an "Epic" feeling to Shogun 1980 that is missing from Walt Disney's Shogun 2024. Yesterday, I was watching the new Shogun 2024, and I had to turn it off. It is simply not close to the majestic masterpiece quality that was evident in Shogun 1980. Arigatogozaimasu!

I just tried watching episode 1 on Disney Plus in the UK, it's swish but the writing and dialogue is very forced. If it was just a Samurai show, it would be ok, but to call itself Shogun is a step too far for me. I'm not that impressed with it. @@theshogunchannel

The new version has loadsa good points especially Fuji-san and some of the other Japanese characters. But the 1980 version, even with cheesy soundtrack, had Chamberlain and the incomparable Toshiro Mifune. 😯

Oui, cette mini-série avec Richard Chamberlain était tout simplement incroyable. Apparemment, il est toujours en vie. Il semble y avoir un débat à ce sujet. Le nouveau Disney Shogun met en vedette Cosmo Jarvis dans le rôle de John Blackthorne (AKA William Adams). Peut-être que Cosmo Jarvis sera un meilleur Blackthorne pour vous. Bénédictions.

No subtitles was intentional in this version. It was done so that you would see events exclusively through Blackthornes point of view.

Probably rose from Ashigaru to samurai due to battlefield promotion while serving their former lord. Haven't seen this mini series since the 80s so I don't remember the circumstances leading to them becoming ronin, but I'm assuming their Daimyo died making them ronin and instead of following him in death by committing seppuku, they were given the choice of serving as Anjin's retainers as an alternative.
