Great review! Thank you! As for the seppuku part, Toranaga first tells him "hara wo kitte moraou (腹を切って貰おう)," which means literally, "I will have you cut open your stomach." He then says to him, "hara wo mesare yo (腹を召されよ)" which comes from the verb "hara wo mesu (腹を召す)," which is an honorific term for "to commit seppuku" and said in a commanding way by Toranaga to Yabushige.

And I'm not 100% certain on this part, but in the same way that the term "shinobi" was used more often in this time period and the word "ninja" was used more later on, I feel like "hara wo kiru" and "hara wo mesu" were used more often during this time period and the more familiar "seppuku suru" comes into use more later during the Edo period. This is not to say the term wasn't around then, however, as the "seppuku" from "seppuku suru (切腹する)" is just another way to read the two kanji for "hara wo kiru (腹を切る)."

It's not a flash forward. This is a dream he is having after being concussed. A dream of being in England, with heavy ties still to Japan and a look of haunting of what he left behind in Japan. He lets go of this "dream" when he tries to commit seppuku (sp?) and let's go of a future in that old world. The act of seppuku, severs his old ties to England and releases that possible future, he will now go forward as samurai in Japan. You can tell this is a flash forward as he still has Mariko's cross, as well as when he commits seppuku, he is remembering that dream and basically severs his ties to that possible future in doing so. Loved the novel, loved the show.

Just like Titanic 2 was never made, there won’t be a season 2 of this limited series and for the same reason. The story is finished. Everyone that’s been involved has said as much. Maybe we’ll see a spin off but I wouldn’t hold my breath as this one took over 5 years to make.

I'm glad they didn't end the series with a battle, because the show was more character-driven. A battle would've made it seemed forced.

It really would have Hollywood-ised the ending..I agree: no battle is better. One thing Toranaga has said over and over about disliking the wasting of life, so this is in line with his philosophy. By out maneuvering his foes, sacrificing a few of his chess pieces, he wins the war with very little loss of life respectively. War played smart.

Imo, the whole “I fed you shit” thing from Blackthorne is too much of modern morality than what made sense at that time. I know that it tried to represent Blackthorne as not so different from Portuguese because he also tried to colonize Japan as well and Japan was the victim of European colonization…until you realized that Japan was not that much better because the term “colonizers” aren’t synonymous with just the West. In fact, Japanese politics got into this mess in the first place because Hideyoshi failed to colonize Korea and in 9 years after Sekigahara, Toranaga shogunate would manage to conquer Ryukyu kingdom. Japan was as imperial as any Western superpowers.

About the battlefield arrangement not being that complicated, back at the time. It's still quite complicated, to be fair. I'm not sure I'd make sense of all that stuff if I were catapulted on a battlefield of that time, but they clearly didn't find it too complicated themselves. Once you learn to recognize each kamon and uma-jirushi, it becomes a lot easier of course but wow. In the middle of a battle, with the wind blowing in your face and fear squeazing your guts. That must've been insanely intimidating (which I guess was the point).

Its funny to read comments from people....saying this was "anticlimactic" ending etc.....I thought this was an awesome series from not reading the Book nor watching the 80's TV series too....I thought it was very Detailed & Rich of Japanese Culture!...Good Stuff!

You're not kidding this was a good portrait of a shinobi. I had actually forgotten he was one after being told in the previous episodes. Just a general question if he married and had kids as part of his cover, would they be samari or be considered pesants?

After watching the show and loving mariko, I haven't seen or know any books telling about the samurai women and wives. I would be interested to know more about them from the duties, beliefs, morals, to the daily lives in a time of constant war. We have a lot of book about samurai and ninjas that you have helped create so i put this forward as a suggestion and a ask as someone who is interested and would definitely buy if you created the book as i own your samurai books.
