I review, breakdown and explain Shogun episode 3 on FX. I discuss the story which is set in 1600 in Japan as John Blackthorne arrived there. I react to Toronaga and Ishido’s feud, Mariko and John’s relationship developing, the trip to Edo and the council of regents going against Toronaga. I compare the story to the real events with Tokugawa Leyasu and William Adams. I also give my theories and predictions on episode 4.

It was still good, but when Blackthorne got left behind and took it in stride and wasn't too irritated by it afterwards was a bit weird. I get he is changing his outlook towards the Japanese, but you think he be at least a bit annoyed. And him not addressing Mariko's husband's death to her until they are reunited on the japanese galley is also a bit mis-timed. Nitpicking, the visuals, music, and overall story are still solid.
@richardbulaon796
@richardbulaon796 3 ай бұрын
I completely agree. There have already been promotional teasers indicating that the two characters will share intimate moments, and there's speculation that the husband may still be alive. One teaser even shows a bow passing perilously close to Mariko's nose, suggesting his potential survival. However, I can't shake the feeling that this episode progressed too quickly. It's leaving me impatient for the next one. I'm particularly puzzled by the scene with the Daisho set, where Hiromatsu seems to be hinting to his daughter that her time will come. Could you help me understand? I have this habit of watching episodes while doing chores or working on something, often while cleaning my katanas which I do owe because am crazy in love with samurai swords.

Buntaro doesn't die in the books, but I also don't remember the fight on the docks. They may have strayed from the source material quite a bit. Maybe they really did kill him off.

Also, realize that a big reason why John feels a bit melodramatic is because he is in the middle of the absolutely stoic and constantly disciplined Japanese characters who contrast his character so much that what would be pretty normal in any other show might seem overexposed here.

The scene when they were stopped in the street to verify the identity of people in the carriages felt overacted by John Blackthorne. Would they not feel more suspicious now that he’s putting on this whole performance to stop them from checking?
@beeman2075
@beeman2075 3 ай бұрын
@@supremeleader9872 I get that angle, but I also give the scene a pass. The guards wouldn't be aware that John has been given an insight from Mariko into the wiliness of Toranaga, and Mariko aids John in her apology act for his loud interruption and his different culture. Most of the guards would likely view John as a western barbarian. It buys them enough time at any rate for intervention from the leader and order to proceed without further checks.

You should compare his "overacted"reaction from Richard Camberlain in the same scene. It's there he plays a pure madman. for no obvious reason. And notice that he's adapting. On the end he answers to Toronaga directly in simple japanees.

John ist NOT a pirate. He mentions previously that he has a "letter of marque" from the Dutch, which means he is a privateer. The big difference is that a pirate is an outlaw who attacks random ships and bases to steal for his own. A privateer may use the same methods but does it not (only) for himself but for the government he has the letter of marque from. So basically a privateer is a mercenary at sea who attacks only ships and bases he is legally authorized to from the government which hired him. In John's case only spanish and portuguese ones. He mentions also that he has served under the famous Sir Francis Drake who stopped the invasion of England by the spanish Armada in 1588. Drake not only was an admiral, before that he also was a privateer.

@@pr0cs Yes it absolutely would. We can see in the show it clearly matters to them as well. Everyone with a tradition of law makes a clear distinction between a combatant in war and a pirate. One is within the law, one is outside of it. It's a serious matter. A pirate is merely a thief and in most societies that means death. A combatant isn't going to be executed as a criminal just for killing and looting enemies. Indeed, the main reason people fought to begin with was the prospect of loot. In general, leaders can't deny soldiers loot if they want to keep their loyalty. So clearly it's not counted as ordinary theft.

The story, spanning nearly 200 years are THAT good…However, since the production was in the early ‘90’s with cheap Chinese production, the graphics and production quality are not to par with modern sets but story, betrayal **looking at you Lu Bu**, strategy, especially those from Zhu Ge Liang are something out of a science fiction story. This isn't necessarily based on history, it is based on James Clavell's bestselling novel Shogun from 1977. It was followed by a huge 6 part miniseries in 1980 starring Richard Chamberlain.

I think Mariko opened up too fast to John. I remember her being rather distant (even a bit hateful?) to him in episode 2. Todo‘s last stand on the pier was amazing. His movement, posture and facial expressions made him look like a beast, even though he is rather slim, I think. And I don't understand how the small boats were supposed to stop the bigger boats. Even the Japanese ship was rather fast and would have easily broken through 2 lines of smaller boats. Even if they hooked onto the boat, it would have dragged them along and capsized them? But these are just my initial thoughts. Still digesting the episode 😬

I haven't read the books or know the historical story behind this series but so far despite not having a lot of action I'm really loving the intricate schemes between the characters. My only gripe is that they don't use their real names, I didn't know Toranaga was supposed to be Ieyasu Tokugawa and I was therefore confused to see him bearing the Tokugawa clan symbol.

They weren't Blackthorne's diary, they were his logs and rudders. Which did prove he was a pirate to the Spanish and Portuguese. They also had his letters of marque. Which were licenses given to private vessels giving them legal authority to pirate enemy vessels. His rudders were far more important. As without them he couldn't get home even with his ship and crew. The scene with Buntaro was another let down to me. In the book, when he was cornered he didn't just bow and attack. He chucked his sword in the water, and sat down to commit seppuku rather than risk being captured. Which was the ultimate shame to Samurai. Only after Blackthorne begged him to swim and plead with Toronaga to wait, did Toronaga ORDER him to escape. Viewers would have known this already, had Blackthorne and his men's imprisonment in the Pit at Anjiro been more than a 30 second clip. It's all too hurried. They glossed over CHAPTERS after the Erasmus landed. They skipped all of the bonding between Blackthorne and Rodriguez on the galley to Osaka, not to mention showcasing the Engles skill as a pilot. To top it off ,they removed a lot of exposition via Friar Domingo and his tutoring of Blackthorne to the Jesuit operations in the far east, as well as simple Japanese and Japanese Culture. Don't get me wrong though, I do enjoy the show. They are just missing out on so much more of what they have to work with.

Cosmo Jarvis looks so huge compared to the rest of the characters in the show, I was thinking he's about 1.85 at least or something Turns out he's my height, just 1.78, when everyone around you are at the low end of 1.70cm range, you really look huge I suppose. But also, he has way wider shoulders than Japanese folk around too

One minor point... You state that in the end Blackthorne's men were allow to leave and return to England. The Erasmus was a Dutch ship and Pilot Major Blackthorne was hired for his expertise as a pilot/navigator. As the ship was Dutch you would have to assume the crew were also dutchmen as the movie makes no mention that the Erasmus had a mixed crew. Or maybe I missed it.

Yabushige wasn't writing a good will letter. He was writing his will because he was convinced he would die. Toranaga wasn't being held for kidnapping Lady Ochiba. That was more of a political statement. She was insurance to make sure that Ishido didn't kill him. That's why he said she was no more a hostage than he was. The reason Toranaga was being held was because he doubled his fife and looked to the others like he was getting ready to make a move against them, which he was. But he could still claim that he wasn't. It was almost as if Toda was accepting his death... that's exactly what he was doing. Blackthorn was left behind because they didn't want a protestant with them... no, it was because they wanted to take blackthorn away from Toranaga. This would ensure that Blackthorn ended up dead or at least under Ishido's control.
