Shogun Episode 8 “The Abyss Of Life” Review *SPOILERS*

This was yet another great episode that only serves to underline the fact that this show is performing at an incredibly high level right now and seems destined to end in phenomenal fashion. Like I said last week, the criticisms I had of this show in the first few episodes are gone and in their place are tighter narratives, stronger performances, and scenes of cultural tradition that serve to not only showcase the culture, but further the narrative. The concept of loyalty really drives this episode for me. What does that mean to Toranaga? What does that mean to his generals? What does that mean to Blackthorne? These different ideas of loyalty are immiscible and set forth a chain of events that are going to pit allies against one another and likely result in these final two episodes being pretty explosive. This show just keeps getting better and better. I actually rewatched the first two episodes with some friends this past weekend, and I see your point more clearly now that they're not as good as Episode 3 onward.

I might get my wife to watch it which will result in me rewatching them too, but I still remember pretty vividly the stuff I didn't like and I don't see that changing.

I don't think it'll matter. They're still expecting Yabushige in Osaka (I know the spelling because I watch with captions, lol) so I don't think the boat matters. If they see his banners and it's him, should be all good. IDK if Blackthorne being there will be matter. Our concern is what Mariko is gonna do.

Just a thought when it comes to Buntaro and Mariko. Even though they never mentioned her preferring to live 1000 years instead of dying with him, and they just make us believe she just wants to die, she’s never looked happy or even comfortable around Buntaro. I think him constantly shitting on her about her fathers actions and reminding her of that ordeal is the real reason she wants to die. Just not with him. Great review and this is my personal favorite episode. No bloodshed at all and still fantastic story that was intense. Stay up G.

Yeah, she definitely can't stand him. My little nitpick was that I feel like that's kinda been the #2 reason but this episode presented it as the #1 reason.
