The actual poem by Gracia Hosokawa (Mariko) goes like this: Only by knowing when to fall Do flowers become flowers And people become people And "Ochiba" more or less means "fallen leaves," so the "leafless branch" line earlier was directed at her. It was over Ishido's head because he was a commoner before rising in rank.

the hidden meaning is to be your true self (real beauty) while realizing a death in my opinion - Mariko sees through Ochiba, even if she acts differently, cruel, trickery, sarcastic but Mariko has known her since childhood and she still is Lady Ruri who was once gentle and caring to each other in the past that's a bit of advice from friend to friend as a reminder and tell herself what the meaning of life ... maybe

Based on true history, Ishido(Ishida Mitsunari) tried to kidnap Mariko(Hosokawa Gracia). When Gracia realized that she couldn't escape from Ishida's men, out of protest she asked Ogasawara Hidekiyo to kill her and destroy her body by bombing the mansion so that Ishida Mitsunari cannot get hands on her body.

Wow, man. I love that you were able to give another unique perspective especially when you pointed out that Mariko, in her "final" moments before committing seppuku, seemed to hesitate...and it was because of Blackthorne. I've watched other reactions and I've never heard this observation yet and I think it's quite important because, while Mariko's death signals the success of Toranaga's plans, and that she was loyal to him and her duties as his vassal (which I think stems from her desire to cleanse her family's name...you know cuz his father is known as Japan's biggest traitor), somehow, she had found something/someone to live for and be happy about, and that makes her sacrifice more meaningful and tragic. A Shakespearean tragedy, through and through. Your reaction is one of my faves. Thanks for being vulnerable!

You said how many had to die for Toranaga to succeed? Well, in real life the battle of Sakigahara involves around 120,000 samurai. One of the biggest samurai battle ever. Out of 120,000 at least more than 10,000 fallen in the battlefield. Of those 10,000 dead, many of them are lords of the Western domain, some of the Eastern had fallen too. And Ishido(Ishida Masunari the real life) got captured and executed later. But in actual the death and suffering did not end here. Battle of Sakigahara establish the Togukawa Shogun, but it did not eliminate the problem. The reamin of the Western force still linger and could cause problem for the Togukawa and must be completely eliminate. Togukawa(Toronaga in the movie) lead his hugh army and attack Osaka castle. He lead his army twice to Osaka, each time causes a lot of death and suffering. The second time he attack Osaka which lead to the elimination of the Toyotomi clan(the hier to the power). This second attack also causes hugh number of death and many famous lords fallen. Only then peaceful era follow. In the novel, it said after the battle of Sakigahara, 30,000 heads were taken(that was what the original novel said).

Funnily enough I’ve seen several reactors respond to Ishido’s cold dismissal the grief of Toronaga’s, “he has others,” by saying “does he have other sons?” It’s a valid question but I think it’s such a funny light hearted response to such a heartless sentiment by Ishido

it's interesting that Ishido's guilty of the very same thing Toranaga was going to be impeached for in Ep. 1, multiplied several times over with all the family members of the regents and various lords and ladies being kept hostage.

Don’t play the game of “friends and enemies” like Nagakado did. Enemies can be useful and friends can betray you. Toranaga understands this. A war is a conflict between 2 nations (or 2 religions) but there are always good people on both sides as well as bad people on both sides. Father Alvito for example is a good man and also a good Catholic. He happens to be on the other side of the Christian divide from Blackthorn but he is not an enemy in his heart. Messy, complicated… and sad.

Welcome to the Crimson Herring. I’m sure a whole lot of y’all Crimson Cried. Despite my criticism in previous episodes about how Mariko the wife continued to handle her domestic affairs, especially after how the truth of as to why she was kept alive has laready been revealed; I do have all the respect in the world for Mariko, the Retainer. She fulfilled her duty and managed to say out loud what every Lord in Osaka was feeling but were too afraid to say. And she was committed to everything to the end. (Minor Tangent: I am happy the gate scene was not a "girl-power mopping the floor with all those men" moment) Now all of Osaka's Lords are soured against Ishido; and Ochiba might have to put the engagement on hold in order to Mourn Mariko. Her mission is a success. Speaking of which, it’s so heartwarming and heart breaking that “Leave us” scene between Mariko and Ochiba. I'm Happy Ruri-hime did not just outright hate Mariko for being her father's daughter; but their exchange was so heartbreaking as they both knew each other so well and what the other was doing and them pleading with each other to make the step to end the hostilities, and saying their goodbyes like that... it was made clear: Ochoba was willing to do anything to continue on living, while Mariko was samurai through and through and was trying to convince her that the duty is what is most important. The fact that Ochiba-Sam’s had to turn away to hide her tears and she can’t maintain her mask )9 fold fence) was just Gold. i think I'm sweating through my eyes. And Blackthorne finally doing the right thing and deciding to Second Mariko, instead of just dismissing all of Japan's customs and cultures as BS , that was the best gift he could have ever given her. So much so that despite my misgivings about Mariko the wife; their last night of intimacy was completely EARNED; despite all your valid concerns which I mostly agree with.🥹🥹🥹 And thankfully, Ishido stepped in, because Blackthorne was already shown as not capable of properly wielding that sword. Mariko chose where to meet her end, and did not go to the gate where she would get captured as Yabushige intended. Having grown up there with Ochiba, she knew what would happen when she chose to hole up in the store house.
