I love your recaps. Had Toranaga resigned before coming to Osaka, the council would have all sided against Toranaga and he would have broken the rules by not accepting the invitation to meet with the other members of the council. He had to come to attempt to appease the council and try to sow dissension and create allies. While he followed the proper protocols none of the council could accuse him of any wrongdoing and order him to kill himself. Fortune dealt him a wildcard with the Dutch ship and its cannons and guns. Had his spy not informed him of the ship, he would likely still be appeasing the council until he could find an opportunity to suit his goals.

Loved the scene where they are forced to leave Buntaro behind in Osaka. That entire sequence was so well shot and acted. Peak TV tbh 🤌
