There's nothing "starter bike" about an FZ-09. It's 600CC horsepower with even more torque. The FZ-07 is more beginner friendly, since it's a SV650/FZ6R/650R class bike (arguably better).
@Shogun09R19 жыл бұрын
opmike343 Thanks for commenting. I don't think there is any such thing as a perfect starter bike. Only the rider knows that for themselves.~ Lady L

pengasus I've always agreed with that too but unfortunately not everyone has self control and because of that you would rather see someone on a bike that cant bite them back as hard. I actually did what they also say not to do for a first bike and bought brand spanking new.

opmike343 Over here in the U.K we start out on 125cc bikes. Yes, they're incredibly slow (my CBR125 does 0-60 in around 13 seconds LOL) but spending several months on one really helps when it comes to learning how to ride a geared bike. I'm always surprised to find out that 'starter' bikes in the U.S are often 250cc or larger, really surprises me that it's legal :)

Also, it isn't just the fueling causing the jerkiness. Notice any freeplay in the throttle when you start to turn it? Run 8 inches or so down the throttle cable (behind the Cluster) and pull the rubber boot up. Under the rubber boot is an adjuster knob to loosen, and then the long adjuster. Turn the long adjuster towards the front of the bike until your freeplay is gone in the throttle. Then, re tighten the adjuster lock knob. Make sure the throttle can still snap back. Then go ride and enjoy much less snappy/jerky throttle control.

Enjoyed your reactions/comments about the bike, and it seems that everyone agrees with you ... the FZ-09 is a fun bike at a great price. One caution, not to suggest that you don't know this, ... but never ride in the center of the lane when behind cars/trucks, .

I’m a little late to this party, but I just picked one of these bikes up & absolutely love it. Been riding sport bikes for years but this is a refreshing change to say the least. Only thing I did different than your first ride was starting it out in “B” mode LOL, just a tad tamer. Great review!

Don't these use fly by wire throttle .. Would explain the difference .. I like this sort of seating position better than the clip on position .. It's also fun as hell going through the twisties fast to , those bars give u way more leverage during switchbacks .. Long distance the wind would be a bit of a pain , as I know from having a naked bike ..

I found the niner being a mut of the previous bikes I rode. The handling of a drz400, the torque of the monster 620 and the punch of the 600cc yamaha that I trade it off for. For me it's a great fun bike with a kick... and after replacing the rear shock from a ZX6R the handling improved over stock, I really like this bike not because I own it but how it makes me feel when I'm riding it.

yeah the lever are a bit low and the front forks are soft, that's cuz you got to manhandle it almost like a motard, elbows up, sit closer up front, dominate the front end, press the handlebar down when you got to lean, don't stick ya knee out so you feel yerself drop into corners, it's a different riding experience to sportsbikes. Great cuz you got leeway in case the corner tightens.

Congrats on your new FZ-09! I've watched/read all reviews on it so it was interesting that Lady L pointed out the exact things reviewers pin-pointed too - suspension, brakes, throttle. Nobody ever told you about the benefits of a hard break-in? Doing a factory recommended easy break-in is actually detrimental to the future performance and longevity of most modern four stroke engines. Basically, it just doesn't allow the piston rings to seat to the cylinder wall properly. This is a very controversial topic... took me by surprise when I first heard it too, but after doing lots of research on the matter and with some first hand experience breaking in my new 2014 Suzuki Drz400Sm, a hard (yet responsible and well planned) break in is definitely the way to go. I wish more people knew about this, it makes me sad when I see a new bike not being broken in properly because I know the owner just wants their bike to be the best it can be, but ironically by trying to be nice to it from the start, they are unknowingly doing it harm.
@Shogun09R110 жыл бұрын
Nick Thorne Thanks for sharing. We do know about the hard break in also, but we have done the factory break in on all of our bikes and we have never had any issues with any of them, so this is just what works for us. Like you said, there are lots of arguments for both sides, everyone has to do that they think is best for them. ~ Lady L
@king_chomza10 жыл бұрын
Shogun09R1 yup, I bought direct from llamaha and they told me there is no break-in, just change the oil at 600. They said use all gears all rpms to get the most benefit out of the initial oilchange. Thanks for the vid.
@TheNecroWrencher10 жыл бұрын
piston rings dont move in a plated aluminum cylinder, they expand with heat, the oil on the cylinder wall can carbonize in a thin film of varnish like material, how would a hard break in do anything to aid the sealing of the piston rings?
@Skyerzen10 жыл бұрын
The hard break thing is a myth. it has no realistic backing behind it. It's always anecdotal. On the flip side tho, in today's super-precise, computer-made, and exotic alloys world, the break in period is NOT that important. I'm a metallurgic engineer for an aerospace company in CA by the way.
@entitykeeper886910 жыл бұрын
Ceramic cylinder liners on these bikes are very, very hard & low friction. You would not affect the piston rings with a hard break in. You would affect the crank bearings through increased metal loss on a hard break in.

All the test reviews on both sides of the pond say that the fueling is off causing a jerky throttle, so it's a trait of the bike. Yamaha may improve it with a map update downloaded at a future service, or you could always fit a power commander or bazazz fuel management kit to help smooth things out for you. Applaud your love of life, enjoyed your laughter throughout - that's what riding is all about! :-D
@opmike34311 жыл бұрын
As far as break-in, not going over whatever RPM the manufacturer suggests isn't as important as making sure you varying the RPM's, speed, acceleration, etc. so that you allow the various engine components to see a range of loading. Cruising along at constant 3,000 RPM for half an hour isn't doing a new engine any favors. This is, more or less, accepted wisdom I think. Those in favor of an easy break-in, notice I didn't say thrash the engine or rev the shit out of it. I just said to "vary." Some people suggest an even more aggressive break-in procedure, but I'm not about to open that can of worms on here as people feel VERY strongly either for or against it.

I am not surprised. I know Sho is loyal to Yami, and I have had my eye on a new Triumph Street Triple R to go with my CBR1000RR! Nice to have different bikes for different purposes. Naked bikes are fun to cruise around the city with. I was comparing the FZ-09 to the Street Triple R, and I like the Triumph better. The FZ-09 has ride-by-wire throttle, soft brakes, and mushy suspension. The Triumph has none of those problems! I give Sho a month, and he'll be putting Ohlins on that bike! LoL The FZ-09 does have a nice engine though. I'm sure he'll have fun on it. But my guess is, he won't be able to leave it alone. He's going to want to mod it.

I've been looking to get a FZ-09 as an upgrade to my ninja 250R, I've only been riding for a year but put about 10k miles on my ninja. Do you think its a wise upgrade? a jump from 250cc to 850cc?
@Shogun09R111 жыл бұрын
You are the only one that knows if you are ready for an upgrade or not. As I always say, every rider is different. I started on a 600 and now I am on a 1000. You have to ride your ride and as long as you feel confident, that is all that matters:) ~ Lady L

I think your good buddy went from a ninja 300 to and fz09 and I did the same about 11k on it and then moved up just take it easy I've only had mine for a week now and I love it

i'm in exact same boat as you Trub1n. I ride a ninja 250r, I get my open license at the start of June, have an mt09 firmly in my sights.

december ferret Nice, my comment was exactly from a year ago, I got a used 2008 R6 this summer for half the price a new mt09. Great bike and great value.Bbut after of 4 months of riding, it got stolen from downtown, right outside of the federal reserve. :(, total disappointment. Only had an audible xena disk lock on it at the time of theft. Just thought you should be aware, when you get your new bike. Thieves see its value too.

U know I dig your channel, though, not a fan of the Fz09. ...test rode one (review on my channel, with the new V-rod, too) last week at the Phx Bike Show. Since I heard so many fellow YT'ers raving about it in the UK, etc., and I like the naked bikes (my Monster). I think it's due to their electronic throttle, it felt somewhat disconnected and didn't offer the confidence I like. Though it was only a guided group test ride & it could have been due to the multiple ride setting options ....Sweet looks and Power fo shur !! ...Congrats, & that's why there's different bikes for different personalities, etc. I will always keep watching - SpeedSafe ;)

Thanks so much for the support. This is definitely a different bike, but will be a totally different fun experience for us. Ride safe:) ~ Lady L
@Dracati11 жыл бұрын
It was a short 'guided test ride',.. and it can wheelie like a MoFo, too. With the adjustable settings, I'm sure I would dial it in after awhile. I'm glad I did ride it, & I look forward to both of you uploading viddy's from it. Thx for reply !!

The biggest thing that turns me off to this bike and made me get the 07 is the placement of the dash. It makes no sense for it to be so offset instead of centered like the 07.

The upright sitting position is a bit different but as I keep looking at the bike it is a very nice looking bike, can't wait to hear what Sho's going to name her & to see how he tricks her out. By the way is it a 1000cc bike? Sho's looking rather comfortable on Z I just paused to read your comment Sho, did you say that's an 09, or is Fz-09 the name?

What do you mean with breaking period?!
@Shogun09R110 жыл бұрын
Most manufacturers suggest not exceeding a certain RPM range, depending on the bike, until after you reach a certain amount of miles and do the first oil change. It is just a recommendation. Some riders prefer to just go full speed ahead to get through the break in period. Hope this helps. ~ Lady L

I also reviewed this bike last week and will upload my video soon. However I agree on many things... -Jerky throttle: Agreed but in Standard mode it gets better -Levers feel soft (cheap): Agreed but can be changed -Fun bike: Agreed HELL YEAH! -Upright: Agreed -Brakes feel weird: Disagree I liked it tbh -Bumpy ride: Disagreed I felt that it was really soft -Wind: I didn't mind it at all compared to the 2014 Z1000 I reviewed it was really good! -Power: Agreed, plenty of it! -Commuting bike: Agreed but not just limited to that... *evil grin*
