Hope you know Tokyo is geographically a small prefecture. Yet, it is the center of politics, economics and business of Japan, but not necessarily an incubator for sport athletes. Though surrounding prefectures produce Japanese star athletes of 20th century, like Sadaharu OH, who hit the most homers in professional baseball in the world.

@@qman66 he was hating on Ohtani and saying Ohtani shouldn’t win MVP, basically because he (Ortiz) didn’t win mvp mostly due to him being a DH. He thought he had a comparable or even better season than Ohtani and doubled or even tripled down saying others like Lindor should be mvp. He’s finally saying Ohtani should be mvp now that the dodgers are going to the World Series. I’m sure he’s still is bitter at Ohtani but don’t want anymore hate on himself.

Also, the translator left out some things from Ohtani's reply to Jeter's last question. Specifically he said, "even within the regular season, we had a lot of tough games to get through, but upon getting through the 162 game season and striving to finish the job left in the postseason is a special moment." The most obvious information he ommitted in Shohei's reply was basically where Shohei said "we had a lot of tough games in the regular season." He didn't necessarily say that the regular season in and of itself was difficult.
@bensonspov

I really don't like how they got this dude to translate for him. They should've hired a proper translator. So many times I feel like he leaves out small things that Ohtani says or translates it missing some key points to Ohtani and although the gist of what's being said is being transferred across. It's just not the same as actually interpreting for a person. Your example was one of them and there was another one in this interview too that I thought he should've included it but didn't.

I have no doubt in my mind that at this point he understands English perfectly fine. Right after the game ended, he was asked on broadcast, something along the lines of "what does it mean to be able to play for the World Series?" - Just look at the way he was nodding with pure energy - he was SO ready to answer that question in English because of just how much it means to him to live in another step of him claiming his destiny.

In Japanese answer as well, he selects words very carefully and sometimes sounds avoiding the direct answer. And that’s why he needs an interpreter. Because nuanced expressions are really difficult and varied among nationalities and their cultures. Hope you notice that what the interpreter said is not exactly what Shohei expressed verbally in words. 😊

If the other injured pitcher on the Dodgers is healthy, it would make the WS rotation a lot easier. In a short-season game, the presence of an absolute ace pitcher is more important than the number of pitchers. It is hard not to be able to use this injured pitcher as a pawn when he is actually a member of the team.

I have to be honest. The translator here actually didn't translate some questions A-Rod had, like "how excited Ohtani was about going into the world series". And also he mistranslated some of Shohei's replies, like when he say other good players too like Soto. Ohtani never mentioned Soto's name, he said "Aaron Judge is a special player but they have a lot of other great players too, and we have to look at them as a team as a whole as we prepare for them, and we have to prepare together ourselves as a team." In case you're wondering how I know, I have lived in Japan for several years and speak Japanese every day. Either way, whatever. I guess perfect translation isn't everything haha.

Yeah, it seems like his interpreter isn't trying to translate Ohtani's words very accurately. I don't know if it's due to a lack of Japanese proficiency or an attempt to simplify things as an interpreter, but it feels like there's a lot of paraphrasing.
@robertsmith2088
@robertsmith2088 6 күн бұрын
@@kk-hj6pu I think because it's a bit challenging for him to find the correct wording to illustrate what he's trying to communicate. I know from experience it's not easy translating between English and Japanese, though I would have thought at least from the side of translating from Japanese to English he would not have omitted as much information, given how much more flexible the English language is compared to the Japanese language.

Also, just to clarify Ohtani didn't say you're only focusing on one thing as a DH so it's hard to get into the flow the game, he just said "understanding the situation of the game is the most difficult thing when you're a DH, unlike the opposite situation of when you're pitching and dictating the flow of the game." If you want me to type out his reply it's something like this: そうですね、まぁ試合状況が読みづらかったりとか、ああの、逆に投げている時っというのは試合状況を自分で作っているでわかり易いですけれど、DHはやっぱりそういうところのが、まぁ一番難しいかなと思います。 That's exactly what he said, based on what I heard from him in the video. Use DEEPL, translate the transcript I've provided, and tell me if the translator got it wrong or not 😂

I don't have a particularly big problem with it, he's just displaying his humility or you could even say shyness. But I don't think he's being disrespectful in anyway, and he still does acknowledge who he is talking to even if for only a short moment of eye to eye contact.

I'm Japanese, and we don't have the culture of avoiding eye contact like you say, and it's normal to make eye contact with the person you're talking to. It really depends on the personality of the individual. Even in Japan, it's good manners to make eye contact with the person you're talking to.
@novrinkov0053
@novrinkov0053 6 күн бұрын
The reason why Ohtani doesn't make eye contact with the person he's talking to is because he's talking through an interpreter, or because he's nervous because the people he's talking to are the star players he watched as a child. I think he makes eye contact when he talks to his teammates.
