I believe It’s the only Native American written song to reach the top 5 on the billboard Hot 100. Talk about underrepresented. As someone with Native American heritage, I encourage everyone to go to a pow wow, or watch a documentary or listen to some Native American drums and flutes to round out your life. It’s our American foundation. ❤❤❤

@destinyreelly2974 Buffy Saint-Marie co-wrote Up Where We Belong. It spent three weeks at #1 in November, 1983. She was the first Native American to win an Oscar and a Golden Globe, when the song won Best Original Song. She went on to win the British BAFTA award also. The song was named one of the songs of the century by the Music Association.

Redbone has the same meaning here. Many of the members are mixed race, (Native American and Mexican) which is where the term Redbone came from in New Orleans. Also, Lolly Vegas (the singer) was Jimi Hendrix favorite guitar player. It is said Hendrix was the one who influenced them to start Redbone. Lolly and Pat (the two brothers in the band) have played with everyone from Tina Turner to James Brown to Elvis. Truly legends.

Redbone is the only funk rock band made up of all Mexican & Native American heritage members. This was reflected in their songs, stage costumes & album art. "Come & Get Your Love" was their biggest hit in 1974. This song was used in the 2014 movie "Guardians Of The Galaxy". But they had some other songs such as "We Were All Wounded At Wounded Knee", "The Witch Queen Of New Orleans", "Wovoka", "Maggie" etc.

This has been a huge hit since the 70s. Of course many younger people have heard it from Guardians of the Galaxy, but I've known this song since I was young! The members are a combination of Native American & Mexican, I believe. I Got 2 bands that are mostly comprised of Native Americans . For a Hard Rock take on "Southern Rock" you have Blackfoot led by Rickey Medlocke who has been a member of Lynyrd Skynrd for over 20 years now . "Blackfoot" is a 4 piece band with Native Americans Medlocke , Jackson Spires & Greg Walker with "token white guy" Charlie Haggart . Rickey was also an early member of Lynyrd Skynyrd too , before they got their record deal . "Highway Song" is the bands guitar anthem much like Skynyrds "Freebird" . Another Aptly named band of Native Americans "Indigenous" is an off the beaten track favorite of mine . Their Lead Guitarist & Singer Mato Nanji evokes a style heavily influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan . A music video of them to check out is "Things we Do" . Also their song "Rest of my Days" made some headway on the charts . You'll really pick up on the SRV influence with these 2 songs 🙂
