As far as Vanilla, he's a multimillionaire real estate guy now. He saved his money and invested well. It all started with this song. There's a lot of history with him and Suge Knight from Death Row. Ice's music helped finance the early Dr Dre stuff. He was considered a joke by some, but you couldn't deny the catchy hook and track.

If you were alive back then, it's hard to express just how big this song was when it came out. The radio was really big then, and the Top 9 at 9 on KISS FM was a huge thing in my area. The songs with the most requests would be at the top 1 spot, and so on. It was #1 so many times in a row for so long, that one time the DJ was so sick of it that he played this song at all 9 spots as a way of rebelling of sorts. The mall, radio stations which were huge back in 1990 this is the hey day of radio man. You could call in and dedicate a song to your girl and request songs if you were partying and this song was in rotation on every radio station and you could request it back to back! It was definitely something and it was catchy and just a party song. Its up there with Sir-Mix-Alot Posse On Broadway and Baby Got Back. Timeless and ageless songs! I liked your reaction and nice to see young cats getting in tune with the hip-hop we as an older generation listened to. This is 90s I from 1969 and by the time I got into hip-hop I was listening to Kool Moe Dee underground tapes and Kurtis Blow and Whoodini in 79-80 then Fat Boys and Run DMC. The birth of hip-hop which paved the way for N.W.A and all the artists of that era who in turn carve a path for Vanilla Ice and Ghetto Boyz and MC Hammer. Great times and great vibes back then! So, Ice's real name is Robert Matthew Van Winkle who came up in the underground scene in Miami back in the day. This track was released late '91, but he had actually recorded it independently just him and his group four years earlier in '87. But, it took them four years to keep hitting the pavement, keep hustlin' and to get any juice goin' and get discovered. So basically, he had to sit on the sickest track ever put to wax into the nineties before it had its day. When you hear the early days of Rap mid 80's, it is definitely dated and shows it's age now, with exceptions like Colors by Ice T, NWA and the Beastie's all of which sound as slammin' today as the day they dropped. Rumors by Timex Social Club also of its time, but still dope. The fact this song was conjured in '87 when Run DMC, LL, The Fat Boys weren't anywhere at this level is crazy cause Van Winkle and the Miami scene were clearly light years ahead, they just didn't have the benefit of proximity and geography to Hollywood. 😊

Found this story from queen's pa When he first heard it, Freddie just listened to the start and thought it was Under Pressure being played on the radio again. He carried on eating his breakfast and suddenly stopped, frowning. I thought there was a problem with his food but he said ‘no’. He started listening intently and couldn’t believe his ears. It was only meant to be a b-side originally, so it was a major slip up on the labels part. The chorus is changed from Ice Ice Baby to ...., well, I don't want to spoil the surprise, but they are definitely clownin' Ice. This came out in 1990. He was 16 years old. This was sold on a 45 vinyl. Back then the 45 had an "A" side & a "B" side. The "A" side had the hit & the "B" side had a song u never hear by the same artist. Ice Ice Baby was on the "B" side. When a DJ got his copy he listened 2 the B side & Ice Ice Baby was the song. On the "A" side is a song u probably know called "Play That Funky Music (white boy)." I believe the album is still selling over 300,000,000 copies a year world wide!

It was very cool and fun watching you react Shon, especially since you don't know the history. Vanilla Ice was laughed at for this song even though it was a huge hit. It was because he was the first white rapper. And he was good. He had to endure a lot of ridicule. He never had another big hit like this and he fell into a deep depression and nearly committed suicide. He credits the birth of his daughter for saving his life. He was ashamed of his music career then, but everyone loves him again now. He was very cool and very sweet and never deserved the bad rap he got. I'm glad he made it out. He's still making some tunes somewhere but I don't know their names.

The nineties are remembered very fondly these days. And yeah... he really never did deserve the shit he got from people. I don't think he was ever accepted as a rapper by the rap community. But, much like Eminem, he bridged a gap between rap and the mainstream. HE paved the way for guys like Eminem, and yet Eminem gets all of the credit. It's a damn shame.

Vanilla Ice used to have a show on the DIY network which I believe now is called the Magnolia network and he had his own home improvement show in which he would buy run down the delaplated houses near Miami and refix it up called The Vanilla Ice Project

I met him once and he was embarrassed he made this song. I guess, lateron people were making fun of him on TV, and I told him he should be proud of it. Lots of people liked it, and created fun memories hearing this song..I think I got thru to him a bit. He was also traumatized by some big rapper that threatened him.
