Steve Stevens on guitar… man, he was and still is a supremely inventive guitarist. Gets all kinds of insane sounds out of the most basic effects pedals, and equally able to go onstage with just an acoustic guitar and rock the house behind Billy. There’s a version of the song from Billy’s “VH1 Storytellers” performance where they do exactly that, and it holds up every bit as well as the original. Check it out if you get the chance!😎🎶

Steve Stevens, awesome guitarist. Got that sound in the solo by holding a kid's toy "Ray Gun" to the pickups.
@landisix97095 ай бұрын
The fast reverb sound you heard during the solo was the guitarist (Steve Stevens) taking a toy Ray gun and pressing it against the guitar pickups to get various wacky lazer like sounds. He’s known for doing this on multiple songs and his live shows. Glad you caught that 😉 👏

You have to do Shock to the System just for the backstory. Billy was in Los Angeles when riots broke out in response to the acquittal of the cops who brutalized Rodney King. He got so excited over people rising up he jumped on his motorcycle and drove around through the riots. He said it was the most punk rock thing he had ever seen in his life. (Keep in mind he was part of the OG punk scene in England so he doesn't say that lightly) He was so impressed and hopeful he wrote Shock to the System as a tribute to the people of LA who threw down

When I first heard and saw this song on TV in early 1984 as a 16 year old it just blew my mind. I was already a huge Billy fan after his first album but this just took it to another level. I saw Billy play in 2019 and he was still awesome and, unlike most older rock stars, in incredible physical shape. He was ripped! And Steve Stevens, the guitarist on this video, was playing too. What a couple of legends

Trivia: Rebel Yell is Kentucky Bourbon. Apparently The Rolling Stones and Billy were at a party drinking this bourbon and the idea of a song came to his head. More, more, more: In 1993 he released ‘Cyberpunk’, an album that somewhat anticipates the sounds in Prodigy's ‘The Fat Of The Land’. This happened in a wave of cyberpunk fever with some really good and/or interesting movies: re-release of "Blade Runner (Director's cut), Johnny Mnemonic, Strange Days, Demolition Man, Max Headroon (TV), The Lawnmower Man Hackers...
@rogerdaly63265 ай бұрын
The party was for Mick Jaggers birthday and Mick , Keith and Ron Wood had a bottle turned up drinking from it. Billy saw the bottle and recognized a confederate soldier on the label and that the liquior was called Rebel Yell. Out of curiosity he asked them if it was something they had special made or owned the rights to. They told Billy it was from America and they had nothing to do with it. Billy said great , cause he was gonna write a song and call his next album Rebel Yell. The rest is history ! !

The strange sound at around 5 minutes and 10-12 seconds is done by the guitarist using a toy ray gun pushed up against the guitar's pickup and it is so cheap and creative and I never knew how they did it till about 5 years ago. And due to being almost 50 and having an older sister that loved him from just before he came over from England that pisses me off and makes me smile!

You know, I looked up what an actual Rebel Yell sounded like--VERY different from what I think most of us pictured!! In the early 20th century, they got a whole bunch of actual Confederate veterans together, and they each came up to the mic and recorded their version. They were all a bunch of high pitched, kind of quavery yips--didn't really sound much like yells, more like being surrounded by coyotes during their nightly howl sessions. Get enough people doing it at the same time, and I can definitely see it being intimidating on the battlefield, but it was 0% Dukes of Hazzard/YeeHAW, which is what I'd always pictured. The real thing kinda works in the context of the song, but it's NOT AT ALL what I would have expected when I first heard this song decades ago!

The guitar player is the great Steve Stevens and he is a collector of vintage toys - that ‘flicking’ sound you heard was his 1960’s era toy space gun. Even though there used to be a keyboard player in the video there are no keyboards on this album - all the keyboard sound are Steve Stevens playing guitar to sound like a keyboard.
