Dimash and the composer of this song, Igor Krutoy (at the piano), often use archetypes in their music. This epic piece evokes the journey of soul (wandering in ancient times, haunted by memories, and lost loves ) as it finds itself in an expanded state of awareness (new ground, chance to know who I am, begin again). Hesitantly at first, he even stumbles a bit, but with growing confidence, Dimash takes us on a journey and with that last refrain, he totally owns this new ground. Like in many of his arrangements, Dimash incorporates music traditions of different cultures and ages into something uniquely his own. The music of ancient cultures often used chants, overtone singing, and melismatic techniques to induce a hypnotic trance in the listener. Dimash is not only aware of the power of music to alter one’s state of consciousness, he wields this power masterfully, but always with great respect. His friend since his teenage years, Erlan Bekchurin, is a brilliant arranger and knows exactly what Dimash wants to accomplish. Together they create magic. Dimash insisted on the use of the kobyz, an instrument which was used in Kazakh shamanism to communicate with spirits, and it fits beautifully. The best Kobyz player in the world, Dimash’s friend Olzhas Qurmanbeck, performs masterfully as always. Dimash has extra-ordinary talent, but without putting in a lot of hard work, he would never have been able to develop his voice and performance to what it is now. Many people have raw talent, but few have dedicated their lives to perfect their art the way Dimash has. Because Dimash has studied voice since he was 5 years old and practiced several hours every day throughout his life, he was able to keep the upper registers after puberty when most other boys his age went through their voice changes. With continuous practice as an adult, he was - and still is -- able to extend his range significantly, both in the lower and upper registers. In interviews, Dimash compares his vocal exercises to the kind of training athletes have to undergo. He is a very disciplined artist. In addition to 3 hours vocal practice every day, he also exercises daily and swims under water to strengthen his lungs and chest muscles to support his voice. As a dedicated Muslim, he does not smoke, drink alcohol, use drugs or profanities, or engage in questionable social activities. You will find no scandals about him. He surrounds himself with his beloved family and like-minded friends and artists to stay well-grounded. Despite his success, he is a very humble, gracious person, continuously working towards ever greater mastership of his art, always striving to be worthy of every song that he is performing. That is why he is such a powerful presence on stage: he always gives 100% to his music and his audience. He not only performs each song; he embodies it, body, mind, heart, and soul.

According to the ancient beliefs of many people, only in a single piece will the living singing soul of the tree remain, which will sound in the instrument. The open body and strings of the kobyz from a bunch of 30-60 untwisted horse hair give a very thick, overtone-rich timbre. 🔝🔝

A world renound pianist I knew and I were chatting one day. I mentioned the breeze and said what a great kite flying day it would be. He said, " I've never flown a kite. I was too busy practicing piano." I was stunned. I went, got him a kite, and watched a 50 year old man become a kid that afternoon. His smile was ear to ear watching his kite fly, his eyes bright with excitement. Dimash has a special voice, but it cost him dearly. I hope we Dears let him know how much we appreciate his hard work.

The string instrument with the awesome sound is a Kobyz, the national instrument of Kazakhstan, and it is regarded as the ancestor of all modern string instruments. It is played here by master Kobyzist Olzhas Qurmanbek. Both are prominently featured in the performance if Samaltau for the Tokyo Jazz Festival. You have reacted to two of the three must-watch performances for Dimash beginners. The third one is Sinful Passion where he starts beautifully slow and low only to let off a vocal firework in the last third of the song. The note you heard here at the end was 20 seconds long, but the final phrase in Sinful Passion is 24 seconds in one breath and includes multiple vocal styles, a slide, several runs, and crazy high belting. Vocal experts said, it is the best 24 seconds of singing they have ever heard.

I’m sure someone mentioned, that he can hit almost 8 octaves, right😅? He is so awesome, isn’t he? Stranger is one of my absolute favorite songs. I get goosebumps every time I hear it. I’m a real fan of movies that have such a mystical or oriental atmosphere. And it was such a great idea by Dimash to use the Kobysz for that. The kobyz is a very old two stringed Kazakh folk instrument and it’s spread among Kazakhs. The man who often is playing the kobyz in Dimash’s performance (also here in Stranger) is the best on this instrument and a good friend of Dimash. His name is Olzhas Qurmanbek. You often can hear this instrument when Dimash sings in his native tongue like Samaltau, Qairan Elim or Òmir Òter. He sang Stranger for the first time at New Wave in Sochi, Russia in 2021. This is an international competition for young artists, founded in 2002 by Igor Krutoy. Dimash sang here as a guest and was also a member of the jury. Igor Krutoy, like so many other masterpieces, wrote this song specifically for Dimash and his incredible vocal range (in this song alone he sings 5 octaves F1-F6 I think). And the last note he held for 20 seconds. Igor Krutoy is a famous Russian-Ukrainian composer, producer and songwriter. He came out of retirement specifically to work with Dimash when he first heard him. True masterpieces were created. He writes songs that only Dimash could sing with his vocal range (no kidding), like Olimpico, Stranger or Ave Maria. You'll often see him accompanying Dimash on the piano. If Igor Krutoy is there, the song was also written by him. The two have no contract. Their cooperation is based more on mutual trust. It's more of a father-son relationship. Please react next to Olimpico from his Arnau concert. In this song he sings in Italian. You can find it on Igor Krutoy‘s Channel.
