for most of my childhood my parents were addicted to prescription painkillers, so as someone who’s seen shit like this firsthand this short is scarily accurate. the part where the twin picks up the phone in such jerky but sluggish motions reminds me so much of how my dad would move and even talk to me at times. they’re both clean now and have been since i was like 13-14 (im 20) but this short really drives the point home; people who misuse drugs spiral so far down and lose all control they have over their life, turning them into wildly different people

I thought I would share my interpretation of the scene at 9:40 where the kids in their room on their devices while the mom watches. I think the kids are using their devices as a form of escapism. The mom’s drug addiction seems to have taken so much control over her to the point where she can’t take care of her kids and might have even been abusive toward them. The kids are probably using escapism to forget about the dark reality of their life and look for comfort or security that they had lost. I have my own experiences with using escapism to deal with and forget trauma so seeing that hit pretty close to home. Their mom watching them from outside the room is probably her wanting to be a good mom and be apart of their lives again but feels like she can’t anymore because she feels so far gone thanks to her addiction. Drug addiction doesn’t just affect the person abusing drugs, but it also affects the people around them.

I as well know what it’s like to have a mother who was under drug addiction. I honestly can’t remember anything in order, but here’s what I think happened; Basically I was probably about 6-9 and my mother(biological) would date a man named Joseph, he was fine for the first few weeks, then he started to for me and my little sister and big brother to call him ‘Dad’… later on the abuse became mental, he made me and my brother put all of our toys in bags and throw them outside.. he threatened to burn them. My brother said “That would be a waste of money.” In which he was punished for it. He was told he couldn’t smile or be happy. Not even laugh. Later on, after a painful month, it was around Christmas, so it was cold (We used to live in Hamilton Alabama) And.. Me and my little sister were talking to each other, saying how we didn’t want to be in that house.. Joseph locked me, my little sister, and big brother outside for Forty Five minutes… Me and my little sister were in dresses, and my brother was only in shorts.. when we came inside my mother was ‘crying’ Joseph said it was my fault… eventually, the mental abuse became, Physical, Mental, and Emotional… after a while the police were called. We lived with my grandparents for about six months… later on we went back. Joseph was in jail, my mother seemed depressed. But I was 6-9 so I didn’t understand… it became normal for her to fall asleep with cigarettes, and I once save the house from burning down. A few months passed, she came in with friends and said, “Don’t come in my room unless you’re hurt or bleeding.” And we listened. Months passed, we fended for ourselves. Luckily me and my siblings had a food truck that would come by monthly. If not we would’ve starved. We also went to the neighbors a lot. Another few months passed. And the police arrive, we were told to wait outside.. we did almost hours later we were at our grandparents without a clue. Three months later, we went to our fathers place. It’s been five years since I’ve lived or stayed with my mom, im thirteen now. The reason police came, was because my mom was with a bunch of drug dealers and criminals.. she’s only visited once this year. And when she did. She gave me clothes. And you wanna know what was on those clothes?! Meth! And I got chemical burns! Luckily I healed without any damage… I tend to heat up randomly but that’s all.. Thank you for reading my rant/vent

Two more films I can't recommend enough are Shop: a Pop Opera and Opal, both made by Jack Stauber and aired on Adult Swim. I'd say start with Shop since it's more fun lighthearted songs about learning how to live while grocery shopping, and Opal is more about child abuse, neglect, and escapism

My father is a doctor. He has patients who come in with needle marks all over their bodies, grayed out muscles and horrible symptoms, and the only thing they do or ask is for more drugs, and it's completely horrifying. Never take drugs. It's not worth it.

My mom died of a drug overdose a little over a year ago. We weren't close as she and my dad separated when I was two, but I always had that sort of void, knowing that I was robbed of something so essential that most other children get. I honestly can't take it when my friend complain about their mothers because they don't realize how lucky they are. Speaking of Adult Swim, I think you'd like another short film. "OPAL" By Jack Stauber! I don't want to spoil anything if you do ever watch it, but it is made in stop motion with clay, some animation and it has a few songs tossed in there! + Another thing, Jack has VERY flexible vocals, and he sings for almost every (if not every) character in the short film even if they have different sounding voices. It does have a dark theme to it, so I'd be aware of such before you go in!

My interpretation of this whole film is that yes, the mom gets addicted to drugs and it takes control over her life. But in one of the scenes of her alter egos, she’s portrayed as a crazy lady talking to herself. But she’s talking about a guy whom she met and who she thought was amazing. She mentions how „two weeks ago“ she met a guy. This obviously still being during the time that she was doing that drug, the guy she must’ve met was also under the influence and taking drugs. At the beginning of the film when the mom is passing by her house before she is attacked, you can see a distraught man being handcuffed by the police. It seems obvious that the man may have killed the children but this is literally another way the mom no longer had any control of her life. As she could no longer control the people she was with.

i feel like the drug she’s using is coke,, mainly because the “medicine” she’s taking, she’s putting in her nose (kinda like a nose spray, but she inhales it if you look closely at the scene when she uses it in the car) and she starts acting all,, weird. her emotions are out of control, she’s hallucinating (the scene where she’s talking to the wall about the guy she met at the bar) and having random bursts of energy. ive been around users, sadly and they’ve acted quite like how she did.
