This video is the bomb because you get to hear her noodling at the end with one of her own favorite riffs (from Your Lips Are Red) just like the rest of us...also just generally an extremely subtle and beautifully measured performance

So many people arguing about chord runs and what key or mode this fits in. I went to Berklee. There are all levels of genius and talent there. It’s a jumping point. You start there, hone your craft, then continue to develop it over the years. Like everything else in life. Don’t take everything apart and dissect it to prove a point one way or the other. She has put it out in the world for us. Do with it as you will, but don’t argue over it. Music is meant to be enjoyed and shared.

Random, potentially obvious question: Is Shoot The Player a reference to the film Shoot The Piano Player?

Very likely.

Does anyone know if she wrote the chord changes to this or did band members help her. Please no guessing or that "she went to Berklee" stuff. More musically sophisticated than I thought she was capable of. Annie ?

It's really an interesting chord progression. The song is in Eb so the verse is pretty standard. Than she does one big chromatic chord run containing 10 chords, which I would divide in two parts. One from Db to Bb interchanging minor and major with borrowed chords from the parallel minor (Ebm), and the second part from A to F which only contains major chords and is functioning as a turnaround. Although three chords in the second chromatic part aren't either in Eb nor in Ebm, namely: A, G and F, the ear accepts it anyway, cause every note in the chords moove just a half step. The progression ends with an F which nicely leads back to Eb via whole step. Brilliant!!!

Herr Schnupke Thanks, but I can hear that. I was wondering if she wrote it because her playing doesn't sound sophisticated.

Herr Schnupke She plays it in D here. She plays a basic open D triad (Dmaj7th would have been cool) and moves this basic shape up and down the neck. Like I said not a very sophisticated guitar player so I wonder if she had help writing the changes. Great song though. I think she's been listening to Billie Holiday and watching uncle Tucks right hand.

Once again ! It really doesn't matter how good an argument one makes here if its short, snarky and pro Annie it will get likes...if not it won't...sad but true....

She plays all the chords to this great song the way a beginner would. ..an open D chord up and down the neck to form 4 different chords instead of actually changing fingerings ...she does this on many songs . This is the way it would be dumbed down for a not very advance guitarist to play.....i don't believe she spent 3 1/2 years at Berklee but it sounds cool for her to say she did.......if your beautiful people believe anything you say....i do love the song though...
