Great showcase of the virtual lens, incredibly cool to see it matched up with the real footage like that. I'm also super impressed at how accurate your recreation was... curious to know what some of the secrets were to solving those issues 🥸
@JoshuaMKerr21 күн бұрын
Hi sirandalot! When I was doing my research for my first let of lenses, your 'Make Renders Incredibly Complicated' video proved it was possible and I found that incredibly motivational. You blazed a trail there. Glad you like the helios re-creation, I'm pleased with the result, although I need to build an aperture control for it and refine the focus control. It's tricky to explain but part of the issue surrounds finding the rear element to sensor distance in both thr real world and blender. Blender's focus distance setting causes some offset to this value, which was kinda hard to diagnose. If you want I'd be happy to have a chat with you and show my working a bit. Let me know and I'll pop you my email address.

You probably have a ton on your plate already, but a short walk through of the Unreal part, setting, lighting, etc, would be awesome. I can't seem to nail path traced lighting or settings beyond what you and Boundless guy (I'm ashamed I can't remember his name right now) have provided. Like my fog disappears, etc. I bought the lens pack previously and loved what they do, but got frustrated with the path tracing part, if that makes sense.

Thank you for this awesome insight of how you created this lens! I am really curious about the last part, how you eventually made this lens match the Helios 44-2 bokeh :). I’ve been struggling myself as well with recreating lenses. My images always aren’t crisp and show different bokeh compared to the real life lens 😓 Anyways great work as always, really inspiring!
@JoshuaMKerrАй бұрын
For me a lot of it came down to the settings on the camera. We are using them as sensor planes but they still have depth of field and focus settings which can cause some wierd problems. But honestly optics is such a vast topic and these virtual lenses can fail for just about any reason.

May I ask, if we purchase the Virtual Glass, do they contain everything to get them working in blender too? I assume it will be the model + material with correct IOR. And, perhaps a rig to focus? Thanks!
@JoshuaMKerrАй бұрын
They are set up to work in unreal. I have the blender files, but im not familiar enough with blender to make a neat rig. The helios works a bit differently to the first lenses I made. It currently has a focus controller, but aperture is fixed at f2 for now. I'll be updating this.
@DarioOrtisiАй бұрын
Great project. I will ask to you how did you define and set the distance from virtual camera to the lens modeled? THis is an important question i mean? Thanks
@JoshuaMKerrАй бұрын
In normal lenses, that distance depends very much on the focus distance you want. And this is true in virtual lenses too but it is also affected by the focus distance settings of the virtual camera, so it can cause some trial and error. Not sure if this answers your question
