The secret to the craft isn't in how much one spends on tools, but how much one KNOWS how to USE them. Knowing light, what it does and how to really use it to compliment the shot is what makes a successful shot. Of course, having the opportunity of using models like Bec makes it so much more enjoyable.

Watching your vids it is really obvious that your process is scaleable with gear specs and the space you are shooting in. what i've taken away from your vids is how you bend and shape light like some sort of blacksmith. I clone light setups all the time. I'm going to try and clone your process with my travel kit this weekend. 20 year old alien bee and some shoe mount flashes. I'm going to run the camera hdmi out to an 8 inch portable monitor, stick the camera on a tripod and spend my time forming and shaping the light. The camera is going to do what i tell it to do, the talent is gonna be the talent. I should spend most of my effort getting the light to do what i want it to do,

Thank you, guys! Very informative as per usual. I’ll have to read a little about cancelling or accentuating fill light by changing aperture (was it ?) speed and stuff like that. I don’t really understood why it would not impact the light coming out of the flash.
@rogerbradbury97133 жыл бұрын
Changing the shutter speed (the exposure time) alters the amount of fill light, because the fill light is constant. It's no different than changing the shutter speed if you are not using flash (in manual mode, as in the video). Peter was using a shutter speed of about 1/160th sec, but the flash happens in something like 1/1000th sec; so long as the shutter speed isn't so fast that it cuts off some of the flash light* (unlikely) you can alter it as much as you like and the flash light will not be affected. Changing the aperture, however, alters the amount of any light that goes through the lens; flash or constant. Of course, changing the ISO just alters the overall exposure too. I hope this helps. *The maximum synchronisation speed on focal plane shutters is a mechanical issue due to the way the shutter works; it's not the same thing as I've described here.

It still is somehow about material to a certain extent since it is unpossible to actually take photo without a camera at all, be it film or digital. Howether, as long as there is a camera, it becomes possible to take good photos (on the digitalrev channel it was proven with even the lego camera, and the barbie doll shaped camera; the only camera that has a haircut yet no way to set parameters; in the same idea Vanessa Joy has made tutorials with an entry-level reflex camera). Then, expensive gear can help as to give more options or specific characteristics in comparison to cheaper gear, yet it is possible to take good pics with cheap gear; the thing is to both know the gear being used, and to understand light. Of course, learning takes time and practice.
