Great evaluation of a topic that gets far too little discussion. Collapsed lungs kill but massive blood loss from heart and major arteries kills faster and they always seem to drop at the shot. Love what you guys are doing. Best channel by far.

Great video, as always guys. One thing I'd like to hear more on is shooting with glasses. As I've gotten older, my eyesight has changed and I now find myself wanting to wear glasses while hunting, however, I have not been able to find the right anchor point, etc. Would appreciate some help from you guys. Be well and take the right shot!

Heres an idea Zach. Get which a company or product engineer and work with them to develop hunting pants with build in kneed pads/supports. Or i guess knee pads for shooting from the ground in general, but build in would be convenient.

Great episode and thanks for all the video. Slow Motion helps a lot. As a new bow hunter doing it right is very important to me. Content like this helps a LOT in my training. Appreciate y’all a bunch. If you ever want to hunt early season opener. Let me know. Bow starts Aug 15 in South Carolina 👍

I had a bad shot on a doe about 10 years ago, where it was a very far forward shot. I was shot a rage and the broad entered the far forward side of the brisket, cutting above a 1.5 inch slice into the chest(it wasnt a hole because it caught just the edge of the brisket). I wish i would have take a better look at what happened but it died after going 30'ish yards. Had to have been major artery or heart, great blood trail i remember.

I missed a buck last year holding low a lot like Gregs example 2. I did miss the buck low, skimmed his belly. I will continue to hold low and tight in the V, that was rare miss. Im a firm believer in the Vital V

Great video guys! I've grown up hunting public land in Pennsylvania. Going many seasons without even laying eyes on a buck. Over the past three years I've had an opportunity at 3 different bucks. Unfortunately I was not successful either time. Obviously there were multiple factors as to why, but shot placement being the key factor. Of course practice is super important. But I really like how you breakdown the old footage. It's really helpful to take that information, and reflect on my hunts. Being able to look back, identify your mistakes, understand what you may have done wrong, or things you could have done differently. I think is just as important as practicing shooting, learning from your mistakes, and knowing what adjustments to make. Thanks for the awesome content!

Wish you guys were around 25 yrs ago when I started bow hunting. Such good insight, common sense info. Not the mainstream mumbo-jumbo. Boiling it down to physics and Biology/anatomy. Y'all and RF have rekindled the Archery bug for me the last couple years! I'm more stoked about Archery Season this year, than I have been in 15 years! Sincere Thanks!

Letting a mature buck walk away due to not having the perfect shot or a close enough shot is really hard. I don’t get to shoot more than 20 yards in these thick mountains here in Harlan Ky!

Great vidio! I have only shot 5 deer with a bow but tons with a rifle and your premise is shooting low and a bit forward is spot on. My challenge rifle is a traditional flintlock which for me is even harder than a bow. If the deer is close he will hear the lock. You guys are talking about the mental game of shooting. I was the main coach of the cdn world long range shooting team in Auzç and what you are discussing is the conundrum of all shooting ever! So I come from a shooting and hunt ing backroud. When you see the target make your decision and shoot or not. Game is never broadside it will always bit at some sort of angle. Get over it figure out where to hold. Take your best first opportunity. My last best buck 146 incher I shot with a 308 at 10 yards, it set him on his arse but if you are off to the side just a bit you will not get a vital shot. How do I know this well had to track a few down to get them. Luv this video D

Hey Zach, best with the knee..I just want to say, the talk you had with Greg about shot placement was so top notch. Your use of video and comment along side couldn’t have made it any more clear about the many aspects and variations of situations while hunting be it from the ground or tree! Thank you from a “so called “experienced hunter”. You are never too old to learn. It happens to me very hunting season! Best of luck this year and beyond!@@thehuntingpublicpodcast

This might be hard to believe or it may not. I’ve certainly never seen it again. Back around 2010ish my dad and I went hunting and he shot a buck that ran 70-80 yards up a pretty steep hill, 30+ feet in elevation change. When we got the guts out he was trying to find the heart and couldn’t. We ended up pulling out pieces of the heart. He hit it in the heart with a rifle and it ran that far. My grandpa said he’s never seen anything like it in all the years hes hunted. Anyone have a similar experience?

I followed the front leg up on my 3D target and released the arrow. It flew true and hit right where the metal support rod goes up the leg. Arrow destroyed. 😂

Heck yeah. I talked with Greg at NWTF about the Refine he shoots. I shoot Xpedition and like it a lot but I really like the Refine. Like it better than Execute 32. I plan on shooting the THP Adapt bow from last year in our shop here. I really love turkey hunting, but Bow hunting is my first love lol This podcast is needed. Importance of shot placement can't be overstated!!

So I took my first shot on a deer just the other day. I didn’t grow up learning how to hunt, I’ve had to figure it out as I go. Well long story short I got up to the time to settle my pin and when I took my shot it ended up being low. So low that it actually only skimmed off a little hair and no damage to the deer. It’s been bothering me since and has definite effected my confidence as far as an archer. Again I have had no experience prior to ever taking a deer. Any advice on how to get out of my own head about it and move forward with my career with the confidence I had prior to the miss?

What happened to the knee? I’m 29 now and have had 8 knee surgeries over the past 5 years. People don’t understand how much that will affect your hunting. Even just sitting becomes difficult.

I don’t agree with this at all. Aiming in the vital v and you hit shoulder or high shoulder you’re Not killing that deer. I agree with the aim low, but that vital v has less room For error. Shoulder crease and low is the spot.
